Title: Musandam Oman with the Muscat Crew

This is a report written by Brian Richardson and Dave Townsend on their trip to Musandam with us


Dave and I scheduled another Musandam trip with Ocean Active. We left Tuesday afternoon for the 5 hour drive from Muscat to Dibba and fished Wednesday and Thursday. Tuesday evening was spent rigging and tying knots. A bunch of low cost lures that work well, Halcos and Herus with a few others mixed in.

First day on the way up the coast Dave saw a group of 5 or 6 sailfish and we stopped to cast. I hooked up on a pink dorado slider right at the boat and the sailie just sat there wagging back and forth. I loosened the drag as there’s no sense in trying to leader a fish that green. A minute or so later it was a long release and time to head further up to the GT spots.

We had Capt. Cameron as our skipper again and we were soon at the Jaws. The wind was blowing and the current was raging.
First GT of the day. I built two rods before the trip both Phenix blanks this is a PHD7602XH. It worked well. And a big smile from the big guy.

I was plagued by barracuda. Our first trip two months ago I caught a 40lber this trip they were smaller. I earned the name BB King…Brian Barracuda King. We caught some smaller GT’s before the day came to an end and we headed back to Dibba and GT House for a good dinner, rum toddies and large doses of ibuprofen and celebrex.


The second day the wind was much better and we went to some new spots. It was slow in the early morning and we headed back to the Jaws area. Dave missed a big GT that hit the lure several times. I hooked up to a nice fish at Pop Rock.


My rod is a Seeker Hercules 80…nick-named by Capt Cameron as the Rattlesnake.


We fished Jaws and GT Gym with no luck and then went back to Pop Rock.


This is what the current line looks like on a flat day. See the glassy spot just at the right center of the rock…that’s the spot to drift your lure into the then into the current line. And then BINGO…Big swirl and a big pull and Capt Cameron yelling hit him hit him…which I did. And then it was just holding on as the fish headed for Iran.


The fish dumped 2/3 of the spool on the first run. This is after a couple of minutes getting line back. We moved the boat some to get line back. He pinned me to the rail a couple of times. Total about 15 minutes and we got the buggah. Seeker Hercules 80…makes a great popping rod. I built it a couple of years ago and it’s been awesome. This is my PB GT about 75lbs.

Finished the day with a king mackerel and it was time to call it a day…more rum toddies, ibuprofen and celebrex.

Can’t say enough about Ocean Active…great operation, Captains Cameron and Damon and staff Anura and his wife Mangala….we’ll be back!!!!

looks like a great destination with some world class fish! Ocean Active is making a name for itself as the go to setup for big GT's! I always look forward to these reports, thank you!

Many thanks guys! Appreciate it! Hope we will see some of you guys this side next season! We have about 3 weeks left of the season up north and then we done for the summer. Gets way to hot!
