Title: SHIMANO ULTEGRA Ci4 14000 XSA - SERVICE AND MAINTENANCE TUTORIAL
Post by: REEFMAN on January 30, 2012, 09:42:15 AM
The long awaited Reel service and maintenance guide for the Shimano Ultegra Ci4 XSA 14000...

A comprehensive Photgraphic tutorial.

*** Disclaimer***

This is a difficult thing to do! Service your own reel at your own risk!
Ultimate Angling accepts no responsiblity for things that may go wrong.

It is amazing how Shimano continues to make reels that are almost impossible to self-service, requiring specialized equipment to remove certain parts.
Bear this in mind when you take this project on. For example - The Drive Shaft bearing needs to be literally forced off the shaft, risking damage to the bearing - there is no other way without specialized equipment that doesn't come with the reel.
Another example is the Rotor Nut, tucked inside the Body housing, it is difficult to remove without a specialized wrench.

Let's go...!

That's the disassembly done.
Clean all parts in Benzine, and scrub with a toothbrush.
Oil all bearings and liberally grease all moving parts with a quality grease like Cal's or Kingfisher/Daiwa Red.

Now let's put it all back together again!

Replace the Spool and you're done!

If you want to service the Drag system, this is relatively straightforward...

Firstly, remove the screws holding the Drag together.
Then...

These washers are Oiled felt. Inspect and clean in Benzine, then thorough drying on Paper towels. They should NOT be greased, rather oiled with a quality Oil like ReelX.

I hope this helps some dedicated angler out there to save some ammo on their reel repair costs!

If anyone has a copy of the Schematics of this reel, I'd appreciate them scanning it and e-mailing it to me in .pdf format so that we can post it here?

Many thanks!

(clap) what a tut Reefz! You are an exceptionally brave man taking this on. It really irks me that these spinning reels are so complicated. Perhaps the new Penn Torque spinning will have an effect on this element

Sheeewww thats a tad complicated and I used to service reels for tackle shops at one stage.
I have been adding about 15 ml of 20w50 oil into the reel via the lube hole with a syringe probably after every 3rd outing.
So far the reel feels silky smooth. Im gonna stick to this method until I feel that more is required.
Nice tutorial though and im sure it will come in handy the day i decide to do the major service........
Thanks for taking the time to share. :shmno:

What a awsome tut Tony. Always full of detail. I admire you for stripping that reel. You have more chutney then me. The last time a opened a Shimano grinder I ended up taking it back to the shop and asked them to fix what I had broken. (clap)

No fancy Camera!

Just a Canon D10 using Macro function.

It's a lot of work though... there are 73 editted photo's that make up the final tut. Probably 100Meg of photo's. These are the best ones, chosen from about 450 photo's taken in High resolution, then cropped, then enhanced, then resampled down from 300px to 72px (to make them smaller for web use), resized from 4000x3000 down to 700x700, text descriptions added, and then saved!!

Then uploaded to the Web... then a post is made, inserting the URL's of each photo into it's proper place... done!!

Just a headsup to Ultegra owners...

Made the bad mistake of not lubing mine out the box... fished with it for a few days in Kosi, rinsed it off and returned to Jhb. 5 days later, opened the reel to service it...

The handle has a Jacket sleeve on it that should have freeplay. Mine was corroded solid to the handle shaft...  swr <: wouldn't move at all. Almost wrecked the entire handle trying to hammer the sleeve loose....

Make sure you grease and oil this shaft properly before using it!!

Thanks Reefman

I noticed in the photo's regarding the handle sleeve seizing onto the shaft that you have a different handle / knob than the standard out the box reel, where do you get those and how do you fit it to the handle ? My reel has been used hard but has been well maintained and washed but the handle bearing is however starting to feel very sticky and tight , I know of a few guys in the East London area who have had the handle lock up completely and actually break off and I would prefer to fix the problem before this happens.

Have you had to replace you worm gear yet ?

The handle knob is a Power handle upgrade that I did out the box. Your tackle shop should be able to get one for you.
I haven'y had any other issues with the reel besides the corrosion on the handle itself...

Hi Reefman,

I'm from Singapore and i am a big fan of spinning reels and Alan Hawk too.

The bottom bushing at the pinion can be upgraded to a bearing. The dimension is 8x12x3.5mm. this upgrade will give the reel better torque similar to X-ship used in current models.

Love your work..

Regards.

So I can remove the bushing with a small bearing inside and replace them totally with a bigger ball bearing?  Sorry to ask about this, but the tutorial never show the line roller maintenance and I am a clumsy person lol.......
Title: Re: SHIMANO ULTEGRA Ci4 14000 XSA - SERVICE AND MAINTENANCE TUTORIAL
Post by: fishatic on February 18, 2019, 08:35:02 AM
Why?

There is a bearing already.

The plastic bushing (part 5909) separates the roller (7175) and the bearing (14396) makes it quieter and prevents the bearing seizing to the roller itself.

I can see a crack in my plastic bushing (5909), can i remove this and replace small bearing (14396) with a bigger bearing without the bushing?  Or I have to purchase a complete set of roller+bushing+bearing for replacement?  Thanks.

I would just replace the 5909. To replace the bushing and smaller bearing with a bigger bearing is taking a chance whether it will fit and work properly? You will need to get measurements precise for it to work.

This is an old reel, manufactured in about 2008. The newer Ultegra's have come a long way since then, many improvements. But now also come at a hefty price.
This particular model was pretty solid though.

Here's the Tutorial on the 5500 XSA, which is very similar. Been using in the sea for 10 years. But you need to look after it meticulously.  These reels are freshwater reels that we push to the limits in SA when we fish them in the sea.
