:fshn: Looks like the girls are lining up again with good water and plenty bait and birds doing their thing. Boysz from Cape Town released an awesome blue of 500 lb going 1-3 with a bruiser destroying the teazer and one not hooking up. Water blue again and looking good!! :billf: :geet

Well done on the :billf:

RMC
I've heard vague rumours of a near Grander marlin coming out off Rbay recently - any idea if there is any substance to this rumour? :dunno:

Been some cracker blacks in the 300 kg range but no granders...yet! We have had 2 blues in the 500 lb range and lost a very good black and are waiting patiently for the big girl to arrive. This season has been special and as the bigger fish come in later in feb/mar we may see some really fat ones!

can't wait to get down there
-
Only big black I know off was on caught by the boat Lady Lee, weighed in at 341kg on 26 December

What a great bunch of guys from the Cape. What a pity the fish were a bit quiet on the last two days and we didnt get all of the guys a fish. Rich got his 500 lb and Clive his Dorado he had been looking for but the girls got shy after that. Why it is that the guys who deserve a fish and appreciate it dont get and the charters who have no idea and no appreciation get plenty I have no idea...next time guys! Thanks for a great few days ..what a pleasure to do charters with guys like you.
-
Broadbill trip around Tugela banks yeilded nothing on Sunday night, great evening without results. Water probably too warm now will give it a go later on in Mar. Dropped 2 marlin on 30lb tackle on the way home Mon morning so they still about. Looks like no fishing till Mon next week as the weather moves in..good time for a rest and maintainance!
-
Thanks for keeping us posted and in the loop Oom Trevor!
-
Hey Tunaman whats with the Oom..juslyk die Ballie is nog ver van oom af, loop nog nie op krukke nie :hyst:

How about sharing some of you tricks of the trade with the huys here on ther forum. :fshn:
-
Difficult when u fishing 24-7 but will gladly post some info when i have the time! what would u like to know thats not the usual technical info out there. We all have our own way of doing things that produce results, fortunately i have had the opportunity to watch some of the best lure fisherman ply their trade and use interesting variations that work for them. What works in one area does not necessarily work in another so one adapts and the process takes shape when u have a good amount of data to work on. In the end it boils down to getting the basics done well and then making other adjustments which take time and experience on the water and are the difficult things to convey and are often those kept to oneself! Basically the guys who spend the most time on the water and observe things carefully are the best at it.
Putting your boat in the right place is the most important factor of them all and this is the most difficult to teach because time on the water and an affinity and understanding is essential to success!
-
Thanks, its great that guys like you are willing to share.
-
Man whats up with this weather getting a serious case of the dt's...need saltwater spray in the face desperately! :craz:
-
Desperate to fish after a weeks foul weather Reel Magic went 0-1 on a blue on 30lb in 6-8 meter swell!!
:nobs:
-
Been a long wait but finally got back on the water on Sunday in 6-8 meter swell. Dropped a blue on 30 lb and landed a nice Dorado. Was out again today and got 2 nice wahoo and a good Yellowfin just short of 40 kgs. Quiet on the marlin front, but still a good swell running..may need time to settle. :wahoo: :yft: :wahoo:
-
Out again today on an absolute jaffer with the boys from Ellasras(spelling?). Man it was good to be out with a decent barometric pressure and a swell under 4 meters.. and the girls enjoyed it too! Went 1-2 on blues dropping one on a jump off before hooking a nice blue that ran us ragged before tail wrapping and going down very deep. 2 hours of plaining to get her back up. Unfortunately she came up dead after an epic battle. Still a great fish for our ninth first timer this season. A 450 lb first fish..not too shabby. Looks like the girls are over the cyclone too :rck"
-
Trevor, thank you for a once in a lifetime experience, you’ve made my dream come true. There are no words to explain how much this meant to us. You had gone out of your normal routine to accommodate us and for that alone we can't thank you enough, and then to put us on to two marlins for the day is truly an honor to fish with a guy of your ability. Your enthusiasm on the boat and your dedication to get us on to the fish is something not everyone in the business has and I will recommend you as far as I can because in my eyes you are the BEST and you look after your crew more than anyone I had ever been out on the water with. What turned out to be a disaster of a holiday you had turn in to the most perfect ending for anyone. You surely deserved your t-shirt...
:tkx: :billf:
-
Thanks for the kind words Danie - it was a pleasure being on the water with you guys and getting it right on a difficult fish. Can sense by your words that it has been an awesome experience for you and that makes it even better for me! This is exactly why i do it and hope to convey exactly that to all the guys who fish with me. You did A GREAT job on a difficult fish and never gave up..well done..awesome!!
ps will get video to you asap
-
eish
-
ps dropped another on 30lb today- light tackle driving me nuts  :unhap
-
:resp: you will get her soon Trevor i have no doubt about that to get one on light tackle is only for guys that can wear the T - Shirt , how was the water today.
-
Started off ok but wind later..lots of action on that area again 2 yellowfin, 3 dorado and a wahoo plus a non sticker #@$% all on 30lb..almost a brilliant day...actually not bad, you guys would have loved it action from early. Weather looks lousy for a few days though..rest and fix some wahooed tackle!
-
Two days on 30 lb and 0-2 on blues - fish very lethargic with hot water 28/29 and starting from breakwater with no break in temp.
Tough conditions to find fish..need some cooler water fast!
-
@Reel Magic, is Braam Duvenhage still in Richards bay?
-
Hannes is still there if they are related which they probably will be - LIHAN.
-
Not at moment as far as I know? Havent seen them on water for a while!
-
Hannes is still around.
-
Last I heard he upgraded to a bigger ship and moved to Meerensee but this was a while back, just curious whether he is still around.
He was our neighbour when my dad still had his place at Mzingazi.
-
Well its been slow and have been giving it a rest. Couple of days of SW coming up ..hope it will shake things up for the better. No reports of fish this side, will be down at the club tonight to get the debrief and any news. Comps starting next week so ill be out scouting for action probably Tuesday by the looks of the weather. Anybody had any luck north of us?
-
Trevor what I gather is that it has been slow going North of you. Gamefish picking up and some signs of things possibly turning for the better. Will be in Soddies from Sunday for the week. Shout if you need some info from there.
All the best for the Classic!
-
Thanx wont be very classic if this keeps up but lets hope for a change soon..no reports from anybody at the club either..very quiet! :dunno: :dunno: :dunno:
-
Great reports coming from the Myn Manne comp in Sodwanna with 34 fish released today..looks like the season is getting back on track again! Will be out tomorrow to check the status this side! :happ: :billf: :sailf: :wahoo: :dor: :yft: :geet
-
Looks like the report i received was exaggerated somewhat and just over 20 Billfish were released of which 7 were sails! :nobs:
Well i wont exaggerate our efforts today..we saw nothing moving out there, no bait no birds, and we covered a lot of water. :-(
Have looked at the charts for sodwanna and they do have a tongue of warm water which has pushed in from the deep, and may be holding the fish.
Can only hope it gets here soon as its looking bleak out there. Then again another day could make all the difference. Heres to another day !! :rck"
-
Today was really exiting ..really! Saw lots of birds and a pod of 100's of pilot whales.... :shk
oh and then at 4pm, heading for home ,we hooked a blue while all were in the saloon(including myself) debating the poor state of the fishing!
:hehe:
Were so shallow we had to dodge a commercial bottom fishing boat while fighting the fish!
Go Figure..definitely not skill on the skippers part, but then again it counts. Well done Mike after how
many trips to Mauritius? No 21 for the season! :corrct:
-
Well done RMC! Updated to the Billfish hall of fame!
-
Thanks - here's Mike Riley's Fish! fshg
-
Had two days of fishing in pouring rain :rain: wet to the bone in shitty seas  ....really fun.. not!
Plenty gamefish yesterday and had one knock down and one hookup on a stripe that pulled hooks at the boat today. Definitely not what we wanted but thats the score!
-
Sadsaa Billfish has come and gone ..well done to Trinity on their win with 3 releases. Our score was 1-2 in very trying conditions to say the least. Many of our local guru's going without a strike for 3 days... very slow and in very poor sea conditions...very long days. Water still very warm and no current. Good news is that the big Yellowfin are around and should get better over the next month. We will target them soon! :tite
-
Two boats have tried the berge for bigger tuna and found nothing..elusive buggers at times!
Lost another small blue yesterday on a poor hookup on 30lb and had another go this morning but no bites. Swell on the rise and due to get unplayable for the weekend so the sofa and some sport viewing will be on the cards. Fishing has been off for a while with this 'hot' water. Water colour on outside is spectacular but very few fish! Third cyclone in 2 months has also caused chaos with the weather with more to come..
-
Dont even think about fishing on the North coast till next week some time. Craziest forecast I have ever seen in the summer for this area. Swell wont drop below 5 meters till next week with another pulse of 7-8 meters Sat with 70 knot SW winds??? Winter?? :nobs:
-
Back in the saddle after a 3 week layoff and we were straight into the action after only 15 minutes trolling. Nice Wahoo of 25 plus kg followed by a blue :billf: that smoked 700 metres of line off the long rigger. Got cleared and settled in and was gaining line when she pulled free..thanks for coming! 20 minutes later a nice Dorado and another Wahoo and the first hour had flown by! Went looking for another blue on the outside and then on to the 1200m line to find a yellowfin. Had two lures knocked out of the clips by a Spearfish and then got pack attacked by Dorado. Found birds on the 1200 line working on big Skipkack and landed a few of them too!! All quiet after midday, what an awesome day on the water with no swell, sunshine and a calm sea. Sure the new Oakley lenses made the day even sweeter! Only thing missing was the charter who had booked us and failed to pitch  .....my deckie, Danie had a ball :yipee: .... and so did I! :clwn
-
Trevor - Good you back in action again. :sreel:
Tight lines.
Cheers,

yes better start doing our homework for out trip. I'm actually thinking of cancelling DBSC Festival in order to make this trip happen
-
For sure!! The couta are calling!!
-
Got one of appr 20 that a shark hacked and a few 10 but no busses, very patchy!
-
Seems like some action starting up on both the Billfish and Tuna side with some good releases in the Mapelane comp and a few tuna in the 70-80 kg range starting to pop up. Pity about the weather this weekend but some definite trips out early next week if the weather permits. Have brought a fridge full of quality sardine up to see if we can get these tuna here on the bait like the Cape..time will tell..
-
Would love to hear the detailed results.
-
Didn't get one on the bait but we got a bomb on the troll, unfortunately too late in the day to have a full go on the bait. New Junior record 82 kg Yellowfin for Richards Bay! :yft: BIG
-
Awesome YFT (clap)
-
Lovely stuff!! Sashimi all round tonight!! :win:
-
:cgrts: With the new Jnr RBay tuna record, well done :yft:
-
Excellent catch there. Keep them coming!!! Congrats with the record.
-
Well done excellent Tuna
-
Great fin there Trevor. Congrats to the angler and nice record.
Looking forward to the results of a full go on bait however. Have you planned where specifically or just visual location in the area?
-
That's a proper fish, congrats to the angler and the new junior record
-
Yesterday we delivered a young up and coming provincial anglers PB and record Yellowfin. Today we gave a young angler a Tuna slam of 3 species on his first day at sea and hopefully planted the seed that will send him on a lifetime fishing journey and cultivate a love for the ocean. He also released two young tuna to fight another day on his first deep sea outing with his dad... simply awesome and a glimmer of hope for the future!!
fshg
-
Fish very patchy think its still to early but hoping to run into a good shoal and see what gives. Very good class and sure to get bigger on the bait, just need an opportunity to prove it! Strike under frigate birds so no birds no strike!
-
:cgrts: Im planning my next RB trip already... :happ:
-
Well it certainly doesnt get any better! After 2 awesome days fishing posting a new benchmark for Yellowfin we took it even further and landed the biggest marlin ever to come out of the Richards Bay waters, a magnifacent fish of 363 kgs or 800lbs in old school terms. Reel Magic Charters has had a simply awesome week and there is no doubt who is doing the business here!!
-
:cgrts: :billf:
Give us more details please! How about a proper report on that beast?
-
Congrats Trevor now the next stop is a 1000 pounder :envy :happ:

Well done on a big fish. Pity she was not/could not be released.
Love to hear a more detailed report including conditions, tactics etc. Not everyday we get a 800 pounder in SA so we want to hear all about it please :-)
-
Absolutley awesome, well done :happ:
-
Beautiful, well done! Would love to hear more details of the catch.
-
Its taken a while to get to the details but we had a good evening last night and the head has a slight knock :cnfzd this morning.
Wow what a great day we had! Started off trolling pretty shallow and worked out to the 1000 meter line to search for the Yellowfin with reports of bird life in the deep. Unfortunately my charters had turned down the opportunity to enter the Bonanza. All said we may have done things differently and missed this fish had we entered.,
It was 0840am and we had just reached the 1400m line. I had marked some good bait on the 1200 line so we turned back to work the area when I saw a big :billf: fish on the echo at 20 meters, and showed Divan the mark. As he turned too look back the fish had its first go at the short right rigger and missed completely. We were now all alerted and craning to see the fish as she returned three more times connecting on the 4th attempt. I was already shouting BIG :billf: Fish when she took ,as she had a massive dorsal and was carving up the water behind the lure. She ate and took line slowly at first and then hit the after burners in one of the most blistering :sreel: runs we have ever seen. The first jump and explosion on the water had me in shock. :shk The last time I had seen a fish displace that much water was the 1000 lb fish we released in St Helena last year. She absolutely destroyed the dacron backing even though I had Reel Magic in full reverse trying to stop us from being spooled. Having a platform on the transom is no advantage and the water was dammed up above the covering boards as the swim platform dug in like an x-rap and slowed us down. I was about to hit the panic button and try to spin the boat to chase going forward but I knew we wouldn't complete the turn before the spool emptied. :fshn:
Another 10 seconds and it would have been over as there was less than 100 meters left on the spool. Fortunately she stalled and gave us a gap.
There was more than 1000 meters of line in the water so we babied her until we had a quarter of the spool back before going up a fraction on the drag and worked her back to the boat. :fshn: Divan had kindly offered to help me as deckie for the day and he did an awesome job on the toughest fish we have leadered. (clap) She was on and off the the leader for over 40 long minutes and the tension was incredible as the fish swam in full view some 5-8 meters down but would not budge. I kept telling Divan she was a bomb and he kept telling me he had never felt that kind of weight on a leader..it was awesome! The Go Pro footage we got from the fly bridge and on the angler is spectacular and the fight lasted 2 hours. We landed her at 1040am and our day was done! Slow troll home with beers in hand. :frid Reel Magic at its best! :vio
I know some will question us loading the fish but remember we have released 20 fish this season with 2 doa tailwraps and only one other kill. I also had mixed  feelings about it but this was an exceptional fish and a record for the area, so I took the decision to use the gaff. We donated the meat to a local community charity in Richards Bay which cares for orphans and families, via Dave Savides of The Observer.
And the rest as they say :clwn is history!
-
:cgrts: :udman:
Team Reel Magic well done
-
:cgrts: Very entertaining account as well.... (clap)
-
pic fish Brother well done, and to Gavin as well I know he has been chasing a big un for a while now!!! Well done!
-
WELL DONE. AWESOME AWESOME.
Congrats to all involved and especially to the captain for managing this fish after such a blistering first run.
PS: No pain on not releasing, it's every bodies own call. I would most probably have gaffed that fish too.
WEll done again...you guys sure mean business
-
Thanks Jaen -ya its a tough one, don't like killing them at all but there,s only one way to find out how big they are for sure.
-
800 lb :billf: ..... well done guys , a serious catch of note... (clap) and great team work on finally boating her... (clap) .

Yesterday we had an interesting day fishing in 25-30 knots of NE, landing another nice Yellowfin of 48 kg amongst the most Yellowfin I have ever seen in this area. The harder the wind blew the more fish started to break the surface..fish everywhere. Hooked another Blue and lost it just short of the leader when the hooks pulled. Eventually had to put on the biggest lures and throw back the pesky 10-20 kg class yellowfin that where eating even the biggest lures..awesome fishing in anyones books!! :fshn:
Looks like the Yellowfin are arrriving in mass and hopefully the big girls will be on the outside. A pity about the conditions as it was impossible to get out there yesterday even on the big boat!

Awesome fish well done

Trevor fantastic capture and well done. It is only a matter of time for a Grander. Earlier this year a similar sized fish was released on Blackwatch (give ot take a few pounds). The grander will be around!
You worked it like a pro and I can only imagine the stress you went thru. Professional job!
-
Congrats on some great fishing.
Imagine how the head will feel after the Grander ?! :hehe: :hehe:

Well Done on a great fish, saw the fish at the club.
Friday was a great day for fishing at Richards bay, saw some nice tuna and also another Marli of 290.4kg caught by the boat Scallas. also that great Couta of 31kg on 15kg line.

good weather on the full moon will do that! :nail:

good weather on the full moon will do that! :nail:
Very interesting about the full moon. I always thought that the full moon is the best time to fish and for many years planned my trips accordingly (still do).
But what was very interesting in Kenya recently, when we fished pretty close to the full moon, was the comment by the local skippers that the full moon was not a good time for bill fishing, especially sailfish.
We saw a lot of Sailies out early morning and then they went down from around midday. A number of the skippers commented that when they see the sailies in the local nets they know they will not have the best catches.
Apparently the fish feed very actively at night during the full moon and therefore the action during the day is limited.
This made sense and confused me at the same time. Have you experienced any similar trends?
Please note, my knowledge of billfishing is VERY limited, so I might be way off.
-
Like tides & winds and currents I think the full moon is contentious issue, many believe fishing is slow during the day at this time as the fish will feed during the dark hours
Me I dunno :cnfzd
sorry for the hijack just thought its an interesting thought
Great catches BTW :cgrts:
-
Dont be offended but I always have a chuckle when up country folk who are weekend fisherman at best question the guys who do it full time...you gotta wonder?? :hnthnt: :hnthnt:
-
ps another blue of 290 kg was landed, big yellowfin and a 31kg Kouta was landed.. :hnthnt:
-
Dont be offended but I always have a chuckle when up country folk who are weekend fisherman at best question the guys who do it full time...you gotta wonder?? :hnthnt: :hnthnt:
No offence taken but by "Me I dunno" I mean I have no idea which is better. Funnily enough I have read that some of the top Cape Tuna fisherman do not prefer the full moon. The pole boats that stay out for days witness the feeding freenzies during the night and by day its dead quite.
-
Dont know which pole boats those are but Ive done a lot of fishing down there too and the same applies. Weather is an issue over the full moon as our strongest fronts often co inside with the dark and full moon periods.
-
I agree with you Prego. It is of my opinion that dark moon (new moon) is a lot better for all forms of fishing.
Fish feed a lot at night on the full moon provided it is not overcast and thus do not feed as much during the day. I have experienced this from dams to sea shore to deep sea, and yes I have fished and lived with the sea all my life.
New moon beats full moon for day fishing and visa verse for night fishing.
-
Dont be offended but I always have a chuckle when up country folk who are weekend fisherman at best question the guys who do it full time...you gotta wonder?? :hnthnt: :hnthnt:
Prego, think I was the up-county one :hehe:
No offence taken and sorry for the :topic:, will start a new topic on this one.
Just interested to hear the various opinions as I always try and plan my fishing according to the moon phases and tides.
It is now becoming mroe challenging with trying to get R&S and Offshore in the same trip
-
How about discussing it here...

Enough talk its time to get back to business...itching for the weekend and some good weather, Friday looking good!
Hopefully some Yellows on bait!!
-
Trevor, do you pull your conas the same lenght from the boat if you are targeting tuna (same distance as for marlin)
Thanks George
-
late and we can get to that later awesome report for today out the next 4 days need sleep!
-
Incredible day off Richards Bay:
The game is on off Richards Bay again with big Yellowfin and Blues went 2-2 on 650 lb and 550 lb and 2-4 on yellowfin. Check out the pics on the big blues released today

more
-
Sorry no release on these!!
-
Awesome day Capt well done enjoy have fun next few days good weather :shre: :hehe: :clfoto:
-
Trevor you are cooking, welldone!!
-
Were cooking - today was a blank for just about everybody, bait gone birds quiet and water temp up to 26.6 and blue but no fish...go figure!
-
sry No birds no fish, water temp OK, water colour Ok
:tite
-
Trust the fish to go Awol when my boet arrives for some fishing, blank again today but the Barro has fallen on its backside so its no wonder, just a question of how hard the south will blow tomorrow, theyve gotten the weather wrong two days in a row now! Last two days miserable on the sea!!
Still no chance on the bait with the tuna!
-
Trevor good going there and sure the bite does turn. The weather being wrong is no surprise however, too many fronts moving around for anyone to keep tabs on.
All the best however and waiting to hear the success with the baiting for YF. Question however: Have you got a method to get the juices/bits down deep to get the fish up. Have used a method before and it has worked but will like to get your take on it sometime.
-
Same great fishing, hard luck on the blanks but that is fishing I guess.
Are you getting your YFT on Conas or x-raps and squids like they use in the Cape?
-
nice pair of YFT! (clap)
-
Been using squid lures behind birds far back..absolute killers!
-
Nice Fish Trevor!!
Hope the fishing turns back on soon !
:shre:
-
Been using squid lures behind birds far back..absolute killers!
Thanks much appreciated.
Always wonder why the big Tuna do not take on conas or is just because people do not fish for the big YFT with conas?
-
They definitely do take big Konas even when close to the boat as did one 70 kg fish last week but we get most on the squids.
-
Nice going Trevor...lets hope the good fish return soon!
I'm also gonna fish RB from thursday next week for a couple of days, just hoping for good weather and good :sreel:

A mate of mine won the hout bay tuna classic a couple of years ago, fishing with a Marlin spread, outriggers the works!! We have caught a load on Konas over the years, generally we run the spread a lot further back. But I cant wait to see the results of These cape boys on Reel magic when they start fishing all bait styley!! Think there could be a slaughter!!
-
:tkx: guys, ya if the bait works out in RB it will open many doors. :win:
-
I have heard of some many years back that have hunted gas bottles in Rbay. Martin Visagie was one. Never got the jest of the technique but do know barrels of fish oils were involved...... w;k
-
Trevor have you got a local supplier for Yamashita squids, I cant find the bigger ones anywhere?
-
Sorry shag no idea where to get them here, Tuckers in Cape Town or Commercial Marine PE.
-
Shag there is a commercial marine in boksburg, they should be able to organize if the P.E branch has..
-
Sorry shag no idea where to get them here, Tuckers in Cape Town or Commercial Marine PE.
I forgot about about commercial marine!! they are a client of mine!! Thanks Trevor
-
please post a picture of these squids are they similar to the one bennie sells

Before I post pictures of the squid that did the damage on the tuna last week..note it was last week!! And oh yes the 650 lb blue we released was also on a squid!! :nobs: :nobs: :nobs:
First there are a few stats on the last few days that I needn't share but for the record they may interest some! :uarocks
There was some debate on moon phase over the past few posts and as I don't want to take responsibility for taking my brother on a four day blank out session, I will be bringing up that topic again, as well as any other excuse I can find.
My brother Paul arrived on Friday 13th, exactly the day we had the 2 Blues and two Yellows and I thought the game was on....mmm. The results of my brothers trip were dismal, so what changed? :shk
Well the moon shrunk and we had 2 fronts with a low barro as well as difficult sea conditions. The water temp increased and the break on the 1000m line disappeared,as did the baitfish. :vio
The Kouta dried up ..we were there with live Jubbies and we also swam a live Yellowfin for 4 hours for a black..we tried everything and maybe too many things! :nobs:
Ok, I get it I friggen failed!! sry
But thats the point here! This season we have had a 100% success rate in delivering a marlin or desired result for every charter group we have had. How then does this happen?
Well if you've fished long enough I sure don't need to remind you as many of you have experienced the same, but this swr sure came at a bad time!!
Its just a true story to put fishing into perspective for those who go on a fishing trip expecting yesterdays results..I expected them too, but this is fishing, and as my brother likes to quote ..if it was bar coded and on a shelf, it would be called shopping!!... tight lines all!!
-
Thats how it works at times, its the leveler that brings us back to reality and keeps us thinking on the hows and whys!
-
Absolutely!!
-
Maybe a reataurant opened at the "Kitchen" or they all had a season end function at "The Berge" it could have been an adult show at "The Drukgang" and they maybe invited "Small Heigh" and "Heigh Points" to the function or a masked ball at "Kasteel". Maybe just a juvenile party at "Jolly Robino". Whatever it is, it has us all going grey and bald at the same time.
-
Well thats it for now for Richards Bay as the big Yellos are calling in the Cape. Going down to skipper the nationals and do some record fishing on fly for yellos and longfin. Will post updates but until Nov or the next short trip here, its Adios RBay, its been a blast :tite :ayb !
-
Trevor, All the best with the nationals and good luck with record fishing on fly.
:shre: :shre: :shre:
Take care and tight lines. :sreel: :fshn: :yft: :yft: :yft:
:tite
-
So much for the Nationals, only seven teams participating and no need for me to go down to skipper after all! Sign of the times and the economy...on top of that it sounds like the fish have taken a break everywhere with poor catches of tuna in the Eastern Cape and nothing down in Cape Town..strange season? Maybe the tuna are late, will have to wait and see!
-
Wow its been quiet on the Tuna front still in the E Cape any news up the coast, cape still quiet as well only sporadic longs and odd yellow?
-
Wow its been quiet on the Tuna front still in the E Cape any news up the coast, cape still quiet as well only sporadic longs and odd yellow?
Still a fair number of Blacks around and there are the normal YF up to 40kg.
-
Been using squid lures behind birds far back..absolute killers!
Thanks much appreciated.
Always wonder why the big Tuna do not take on conas or is just because people do not fish for the big YFT with conas?
YFT love Kona's, just set the spread slightly different to Bills, and generally smaller Kona's 8-9 inch work better, if you find a school do a slide, works like magic
-
Thanx Shag been catching game and hunting a bit , not too fussed about fishing waiting for it to turn on somewhere.
Squids out perform Konas on yellowfin most times but yes smaller konas and Jets out back are also effective. Weighting in the squid is important to get the right action so try different barrel weights and check the preformance..heavy seas bigger weight! Tight lines

With the fishing real slow all round its given us a break to reflect on the past season at Richards Bay. To say that we had good season would be putting it mildly!! At the start of the season we were hoping to do 20 charters in the first season and to catch some good fish. Even with almost a month wiped out due to cyclones and bad weather we reached these targets and caught some very special fish
in the process. We also scored a marlin with every marlin charter group we had! 26 Billfish with 22 releases,2 DOA and 2 weighed, including the biggest Blue weighed at RBay and a new Junior Yellowfin record 0f 82 kg.
We had a good go at the 15kg record between charters and had some good fish on but they didnt stay attached for long. Next season for sure. Our strike to landing ratio was around 50% on the heavy tackle and we had 5 fish over 500 lb, the biggest 800lb.
For the first time Richards Bay has a professional charter operation and a fully rigged marlin boat with all the latest equipment and the results have shown this. What a pity we don't have serious clients who would like to fish for big fish and have the patience to wait for the big one. April to June is the time for the big girls but unfortunately everyone here is back at work and there are not enough clients to warrant us staying on longer. The average size of the fish in these later months is over 200kg's in comparison to the plentiful 80-120 kg fish in Dec. There are granders out there but they only come around in the late season and unfortunately no one is out there fishing for them!
One thing is for sure, and that is that there is no reason to go spending a fortune to travel around the world to catch a dream billfish, they are right here in our back yard.!
Looking forward to the next season and will be starting up earlier this year around end Oct. Tight lines..
-
Liberty went tight on a good fish today, they called it at 600lb. Unfortunately they parted company after 10 minutes. getting temp of 24.6 nice to see the blues are still in R/bay. Dolfie released a Black of 600lbs yesterday from soddies.
-
Would give my eye teeth too have some clients now..would be prepared to go on a cost basis..this is the time!! :nobs:
Been home for a short while and have the DT's already :craz:

a couple of us coming down your way next weekend. We should try to meet up

Seems like the big girls are starting to stir in Moz..lets hope they come on strong and we have the same year as last down here! Cant wait to get back in the saddle and rodeo a fat one! :fshn:
-
Yip I heard Duartes lads got some enquiry's so looks like its on!! I have serious cabin fever, its driving me insane!
-
where is the like button............
Heading off to Gani's this afternoon to pick up some gear for this season.
-
Cabin fever has turned into a chronic ailment that needs a serious saltwater massage with screaming ratchet background music!! :sreel: :billf: :billf: :billf: :billf: :billf: :billf: :billf: :billf: aaah!

Still early but just for those who may be interested, it looks like the big boat will be free for the SADSAA Classic next year. If anyone is interested in fishing the comp with us, please message us.

Just got back from Plett and BigT lures after organizing some awesome new lures for the upcoming season in Richards Bay. Looking forward to trying some new shapes and skirt combos. Big thanks to Ted and Dave for their support! (clap)
-
You got some leopards and some andromeda's?
-
And then some! Some new shapes to try too..cant wait for the show to begin. Going up mid September to get the boats surveyed etc
-
Got the latest Big T prototypes in the bag and packing for R Bay. Be up there late Tuesday and hopefully on the water by the weekend. Some awesome new shapes we've been working on with different internal weighting. Cant wait to give them a run and check the performance. Will post some pics soon! :FST:
-
The pics of prototypes yet to be named!
-
Some more samples!
Large and medium Andromeda's
-
and more!
First 4 are Nylon Jets
next 3 are prototypes with different head angles and small concave
Last 2 are Hacksaws
-
Nice lures there.... how about putting names to those beauties?!
-
The prototypes have no names as yet but will get named once Im happy with them after testing. The others are pretty standard. Will edit photos and put some names to them. Will be running Big T exclusively this season and hope to get some more great photos of them hanging onto some fat :billf: girls!! w;k

After a small hick-up involving a few drinks to celebrate Wayne Richie's new boat :yipee: and a few more watching rugby    the chances of having a full crew to fish on Sunday took a serious nose dive! :frid :cnfzd But fortunately old friend Takkie Fourie and his son Daniel were itching to get out and I joined them for the trip on Tycoon.
On the way out we had poor water conditions all the way out to the 500m line even though the temp was climbing all the way. Found good blue water on the 800m line and continued out to the 1300m in clean cobult blue water at 23,9 deg.
Worked north and back into the 350m area south of Jolly Rubino where we found a lot of birds working a plankton line. Water had stayed at 23,9/ 24 so we worked the area along the line until 2pm. Had all but given up on seeing a fish when there was a rap on the short flat. The fish came back twice but didnt hook up on a very big lure short flat. Switched to the lure directly behind it and took it out of the clip. Wound it back hard to exite the fish and bingo first blue hooked up. Small fish of 75 kg T/R angler Daniell Fourie :billf:
Returning to R Bay later we found the water had pushed all the way in to the 150m line off the harbour and this should only improve over the next week with the NE forcast.
The season has begun and lets hope its going to be a cracker..tight lines all!! :fshn: :fshn: :billf: :sailf: :dor: :yft:
-
Great news Trevor!! Cant wait to get back.
-
Its lekker when its lekker! Well done guys!

Had two days on the water on Tycoon off Richards Bay with awesome blue water pushing in over the 50m line and improving every day. Went deep on the first day and found good flying fish and birds on the 1000m line where we landed a 25kg :dor: Dorado and a 65 kg :yft: Yellowfin. Had a marlin in the spread but no strike.
Second day we went deep again looking for some more fish for the pot and hooked a bus Yellowfin that spooled the 130lb. Unfortunately the hooks pulled close to the boat after a very strong fight on solid drag. Didnt see the fish but it had to be in the 80 -100kg class judging by the fight. We only did a half day which didnt leave much time out there but there are certainly some quality fish out there. The boat Madness dropped two marlin on Friday and released one on the inside on Saturday so the season is off and running very nicely and should only improve with each day this current establishes itself!
Tite lines all! :billf: :billf: :billf:
-
Trevor, :cgrts:
Well done good start for the team, and Richards Bay grounds.
Tight lines.
Cheers,
Awie
-
Nice fish there Trevor!! The fish are coming through thick in Sodwana the marlin boats are getting fish everyday, Paul and john went 7/1 yesterday on sailfish, so a bit of work to be done there, but good to see the fish are moving through. I finish packing this week!! :happ: :happ:
-
Great news Shag be out there again soon, rest day today fueling admin and all!! w;k
-
lovely fish.well caught.
-
Great fish those, wow, well done

Madness got another Black here today :billf: (clap)
-
Well done (clap)
-
I like what I see. The billy season is starting greatly. Next week will I be on the water and try and get first billy on the hook.
-
excellent! thanks for the updates and well done on some great fish so far!

Was out yesterday on Reel Time looking for a :billf: blue on 30 lb with no luck. sry Was hesitant to go out with the overcast rainy conditions but the itch :craz: was too great.
The very dark day may have had a lot to do with the results but the water was up to 24,5 and there were some birds and flying fish. Still no bonnies or bigger bait and we didnt go deep to the Yellowfin with the light :fshn: tackle. Sun out this morning and a few boats out, will update later. :rck"

-
Eish! duh
Definitely chose the wrong day to go to sea yesterday. Plenty action out there in the sunlight today. Galavant had 2 stripes :billf: :billf: up and a sail :sailf: but dropped them while Captain Fine caught 2 big yellowfin of 80 :yft: and 90 :yft: kgs and dropped a marlin. The :billf: action is definitely hotting up. Spent the day productively though and gave Reel Magic a major cleanup. Definitely would have preferred being at sea though...gotta do what you gotta do! Eish again!
-
What a way to open the season.. Learning to fish by brail..rain wind and rough seas. Had the proverbial Sh.t kicked out of us yesterday in pelting rain and a SW squall that had us running for cover on a big boat! Electing to do it all over again this morning with an American client Rick Newman who showed more balls and guts than I have seen in local guys to brave the elements again after feeling the effects the day before. Cancelled his game reserve reservations for another mauling at sea  to get the marlin he so badly wanted. He who perseveres wins they say!Opened the season as we did last year with the release of a 500lb blue, released another 300 lb Blue and dropped a nice Stripey..The new Big T prototypes doing the damage again. (clap)
Awesome day! Cant imagine how good its going to be when we get some weather to really fish in!!
ps raining again!
-
Very nice Trevor, now we just need some of them to get here in Durbs
-
Well done! (clap) perserverance definatly paid off. :envy

With the :billf: :billf: marlin arriving early and lots of dates available for November, I am willing to give a 20% discount on our full rates for charters for UA members in the next month. Anyone keen on catching a few marlin contact me and we can make an arrangement. The big girls are out their and lined up for a private dance!
You choose the date and its on! :FST: ]
-
That sounds like a very good UA initiative!! Gents I have sent clients down to Trevor and they raved about the experience, take advantage of this one!!
:+ cred:
-
Qaswa released a nice Stripey :billf: (90kg) and dropped a nice :yft: Yellowfin at the boat off Richards Bay yesterday. (clap)
Wasnt out due to crew failure! Bummed! swr
-
Forced our way out yesterday on the big boat with 4-5 meter swell, rough south sea and rain....and then deployed 30 lb outfits only??! Ran a teazer to get something sizeable into the spread to get a fish up in the darkness. Not a tactic I enjoy but necessary due to the conditions.
Wasnt long before we were scrambling to get it out the water as a nice :billf: Stripey did a good job of making it look decidedly second hand. Fish turned behind the short and waved goodbye! Just the reason why I dont like teasers..Shortly after, had what looked to be a black :billf: smash the teazer, knock the left short out the rigger and then inhaled the right short - game on. Cleared lines while the fish tore 500 meters off the spool while staying down. Couldnt back up in that sea or turn as we had no idea where the fish was. Didnt matter that I had backed off completely on the drag, one big surge and she was gone... swr the curse continues!! Thats what you get for forcing the 30 lb issue in rediculous conditions!
Went 50 meters after winding in all the slack and we had another :billf: fish up in the spread that hooked up briefly on the shotgun and came off. Weather report for the next week is a horror show..plenty time for the wounds to heal...
-
Unlucky Trevor but as you say no the right condition to be toying with the light stuff. How far out did you have to go to find the warm water?
-
Fish shallow inside 200
-
Heard the water was only 21-22c off the drop yesterday

Nice one there with, Takkie`s son and Micheal. See you guys early Dec, Micheal got two nice YFT of 81 and 89kgs two weeks ago on his boat.
Cheers
Juan
-
I don't get it, Trevor and please forgive my question: why would deploy 30 Lb setups in those conditions? Anything big might show up and you'd surely be under gunned (as was the case)!?!
Thanks for the updates... They are here, all we need is some good weather...
-
Yep you right John, there just is no cure for stupidity  .
The problem is that I have been chasing this record for a while and have limited opportunities to fish myself once the holiday season starts and Im full time chartering. To make things worse we have been in R Bay for over a month and with the weather and admin I have been doing it gives even less chance. :rain: :rain: :rain:
To make things even more tricky I have found that these fish behave totally unpredictably when on light tackle and do totally different things on the run when there is no drag on them. :shk The last fish stayed down and made it impossible to chase as we had no idea which direction it was running in. :dunno: Hence my theory it was a black :billf: . We saw the dorsal so it was definitely a marlin.
All ot the above makes it a major challenge and even when its not quite perfect (and lets face it we may wait a year for that with the present weather!) Im prepared to give it a go.
Have had a 500lb fish at the boat on the leader after 3 hours and lost it when it went uder the boat. This was due to the fact that I was trying to do the entire job myself while my son drove the boat for the first time! duh Crazy one would say - absolutely but what a rush if one succeeds!! :yipee:
Anyway its all about a bigger challenge, and sure one needs the perfect conditions. Problem is as in life it is seldom perfect so what the hell we just going to go for it regardless...Stupid is what stupid does!! :hyst:
ps: It helps when one has the kind sponsor of BIG T lures when donating a rig is a huge possibility!
Looking forward to the day we can put the final report on the capture together with pictures!!
:fshn: STAND BYE ON THIS ONE!! :fshn:
-
Out today for the first time since the raging weather to find a big swell running and discoloured water out to the 400m line(Thanks buster SW). Got 2 nice Dorado on 30 lb but no action from the big girls. NE Wind blew us home early but its good to see some game fish making an appearance and with two days NE forecast, the water should push in and clean up quickly . Wondering how the guys went at Soddies today, sure there were a good few boats out!
-
At last some weather to fish in..flat sea for a day..what!! Raised 3 blues today dropped a bus early then a rat and released a nice blue of 400+. Maintained the 100% record on charters since last season--chuffed! All fish before 10am! Slow day at Oet only 8 fish and all this morning too. Out again tomorrow hoping to correct the hookup ratio! :fshn:
-
Slower day today with the dropping glass but managed another Blue :billf: to sort the hookup ratio to the 50% mark which sounds a bit better. Fanus and crew had a great day at the death and two marlin in two days is hard to beat on a charter anywhere in the world. OET much quieter today as well.
-
Marlin food in the thermocline yesterday! :shk :nobs:
-
You sure know your stuff Captain
:win:
-
Unfortunately no pics of today but plenty action. Skippered Wayne Ritchies new Citation in pretty heavy conditions(NE). Had a fish up and fed it a strip on the 30lb - freespool, hookup and all...got spat after 40m run, brought it back up to the spread and it switched onto the shotgun, hooked up, jumped twice and waved goodbye. Perfect 120 kg fish for 30lb..#$@%.
Had another smash on the shotgun an hour later but no hookup. Birds are back with some flying fish. Looking fantastic and we are on the poorest moon phase. Think its going to get crazy in the next 3 weeks ....yeeha! :geet :geet
-
Well so much for the good fishing in good weather. Had two days fiddling on 30 lb in flat seas and no takers. Seems the fishing has slowed in Soddies as well. Last quarter moon phase and some cooler water that has pushed in hasnt helped. Was a fish boated yesterday and BOYANCE released a 400lb fish today. Best we could do was raise two small Stripeys that knocked the clips out and left..very disappointing but thats the game! Some good water coming down again so hopefully an improvement soon. Will be out as soon as the weather gives us a gap again. :tite

Aha...look whats that! The Billfish highway coming to meet us - 25 Deg C and humming mmmm!! :yipee:

Some of the latest arrivals from Big T - UV "TT" lures we have been developing that have caught 5 blues at Richards Bay already this season. They run like the clappers with awesome weighting for our rough waters from short flat to long rigger positions..a must have in your spread! :FST:
Working on additional UV skirt combos and head colours for all conditions..

Out on Beluga today with Mike and Dale Leenstra on 30lb line. Absolutely horrible sea this morning but at last a hookup! Dale(Junior Angler) got a 50-60kg Stripey which was to close to call for the record (55 kg Held by his dad), so we let it go in hope of a bigger fish. Didnt have to wait long as we had a fish on again within an hour but unfortunately it threw the hooks. 2 other boats out also released fish so the game is definitely warming up nicely and with good 25 C water moving in we should get very busy now. Looking forward to the next few weeks! :fshn:

Been a super busy day today getting the top survey and a few other admin tasks sorted so yesterdays story had to wait.Went out on Reel Magic with only Lynie Maree as help and had another shot at it on 30 lb. Had a Dorrrie on immediately, followed by nothing until 2pm when we had a hookup that fell off and then a fish up in the spread that toured and disappeared. Had given up on it when it launched at the shotgun and hooked up in 240m of water. Originally thought it was a stripey but when it came barrelling out of the water, greyhounding for the horizon we knew it wasnt a stripe. Managed to stay attached by backing down on the drag and saying a few prayers!
Hour and 40 later, in rough conditions, we managed to get the fish gaffed after a hell of a tussle on the leader unaided. With the fish having given us the worst time imaginable for its size neither of us had checked the fish out to determine what it was, assuming by the run and the depth that it was a blue. Only on gaffing did we realize that it was a black and that we had failed in the quest of beating the SA record for a blue on 30lb.
We estimated it at 95 kg. Jubilation turned to remorse as we realized the effort had been in vane. It was late and we headed for port to weight the fish anyway. What a surprise when she came in at 112 kg , missing the SA mark by just 6kgs.
Will just have to go out and try again. Heres to hoping its blue next time!
-
sorry about the record. :-( just reading the latest Ski Boat mag got some good reviews in it welldone (clap)
-
Thx :tkx: working hard at it at moment..must come eventually!
-
Hell, i can't wait until the day i can complain about the marlin i catch :hehe:
Congrats, awesome stuff!!! (clap)

Damaged damager... what happens to hooks when you put mucho pressure on the leader. Lure a Big T "Vanatu 50" with UV purple outer and black inner.
-
Last minute call last night to help out with a group who had chartered 2 boats in R Bay and suffered a breakdown on one yesterday. Had the whole group(6) on Reel Magic today for a half day in a stiff NEaster. Hooked up at 6.05am and released a fiesty black that emptied an 80 lb outfit. Guess we can call it "Job Done"Rushed home and to the airport in Durban to pick up the next group at 2.30pm. Hectic day and more to come! :billf: :billf: :billf:

Tough trip for my brother and friends with Gale SW weather swell and strong NE after but managed 2 days in pretty uncomfortable conditions dropping one marlin and landing some Yellowfin sushi on day 1, with another marlin dropped, a spearfish release and a good 30 kg Wahoo on the second. Very bummed not to release a Blue for the guys, but the water has been far from good having dropped 3 degrees from a week ago and the sea being nasty. Sign of good water moving in yesterday with a degree rise and good colour returning. Hopefully the westerlies will go back to where they originated and the weather will settle. One boat dropped a big Yellowfin in the deep yesterday so they still around on the outside line.
-
Well done that is a good sized 'hoo! What did you get it on? Also, what lure did you get the spear on?
-
Hoo trashed a new Big T "TT" UV purple skirted kona. Shortbill was on an hawaiian Marlin Magic AHI @#$$ JET after knocking a Big T "TT" UV pink/purple out of the clip! :nobs: :nobs:

Awesome! Man, those UV purple skirts are doing some serious damage up there - Marlin biscuits! Well done.

Fought a + -750lb blue on 30 lb for 3h 20 on Baluga today. Had it on the leader 4 times and lost it! A caught fish but no weight confirmation and no 20:1 catch!
A bitter pill ... will post some go pro photos in time - need a bit of alcohol right now! :-( :-( sry

:-( :-( sry

WOW that must have been hectic !!!
-
Just watched the go pro footage..want to puke right now! :crzy :rotfl  Will get some stills and you can call the weight - one big momma! :billf: :nobs: :-( :-( :-(
-
Well here are some of the shots from yesterdays epic dual. Unfortunately the quality of stills off the go pro arnt great but sure you can see the quality of the fish!
-
:clfoto: Unlucky...
-
sry Boet got goose bumps just looking at the pics....
-
That was a chunk mate, hard luck!
-
Wow
-
WOW! That is a fat Momma, hard luck there Trevor. Must have been an epic battle. Any chance you can post a short clip of the fish jumping next to the boat? What size leader were you using on the 30# setup?
-
400 lb and yes when I can get this shitty new go pro mpeg 4 compressed file to edit!
-
Great day today!
Hate to say we told you so, but we landed and tagged a 300lb blue and a 60-70 kg stripey on 30lb today. Let the blue go even though it was double the record as I know we can do much better especially after the fish on Saturday..was this blues lucky day! Didnt even photograph it as its on go pro. Took pics of the stripey and my new leaderman/cameraman in training..Dale Leenstra...check the headgear haha.
Fish on Big T Vanatu and Etosha(stripey).

Trevor, you know what...that is the right thing to do. Please add it to the new IGFA release category (All tackle Length), it's still a record boet. Gone are the times that the fish need to hang of the gantry to be classified a record
-
Sorry no measurements taken and too much of a fag.
-
Good fishing, well done!
That record you looking for is just around the corner I am sure.
Water in the pic looks great
-
Another magic day on the water. Dropped a stripey early then some gamefish (Dorado and Wahoo) and then had a double header on stripes and dropped one releasing other. Things looking better and better!
-
awesome stuff (clap) .... yislik that blue on the fish can you get a better colour
-
Awesome fish. Hopefully those Dorado are now heading to Durban
-
Electric blue!!!

Great Skills Trevor! You're certainly setting the season alight!! (clap)
-
Another angle on the stripey - check the bill rash on my trainee leadermans arm :hehe: aha blood in the water! Gonna learn fast!! :billf: :billf: :billf: :billf: :billf: :billf: coming!!
-
Nice one Trevor! Well done on the 30lb release as well big respect!
-
Nice going Trevor!! :hehe: :hehe: The billrash is an injury to be worn with pride, but also one you soon learn to avoid!!
good stuff guys!
-
Thx :tkx: guys good weather for the weekend hopefully more to come. For the ouens in Dbn - hope they :billf: :dor: :yft: :wahoo: :sailf: with you soon, waters pushing down hard now!
-
Stripeys must be my absolute fav.
Chase them on 10kg or 15kg line if they are around in numbers, makes for nice fun, especially if you go 2 or 3 up
-
Went 0-1 on blue today dropping a nice blue after a good run. My leaderman Dale Leenstra set a new Junior SA Blue Marlin record of 230 kg on 30 lb fishing off Mitsu Fishi with Hansie Van Wyk!! Went on to release another two blues on a memorable day for the team - top effort guys!!
-
Good day yesterday after a frustrating start with a good stripey charging everything including the teazer and the exhaust on the boat when the teazer was removed. Second stripey caused the same havoc and waved goodbye. Glad to see a blue that had the manners not to play with his food and hooked up solid. :fshn:
-
Another good day today with a big blue of 300 kg which unfortunately got tail wrapped and died on us. Client got more than what he bargained for and the fight of his life under big pressure to get her up again. 3 hour fight!

-
while done trev.
-
Well done on some awesome catches Trev
-
Dropped a good blue after a 30 min fight this morning and raised a small stripe that did some window shopping and left... all good!
-
Well done Trevor, getting some good results bud!!
-
Thx
-
Nice going Trevor! Looks like there are some bigger fish around this season?
-
Not as many as last season but definitely some good fish around. Saw a lot of flying fish today which is a great sign after the desert we have been fishing on this season! Had a good stripey bash the left hand side of the spread and hook up briefly on the shotgun then fall off :unhap . Going to be deploying a pitch bait from now on, tired of them getting away with murder! :billf: :sreel: :nail:
-
For all those who believe that all fisherman are bullshitters heres one in the eye..the unfortunate sight of the big fish tail wrapped and DOA. Senseless releasing it again wouldnt you say?
-
Nice going trev
Thanks for heads up on big T got some and took them for a swim yesterday but no luck yet.
If it's gona die the rather eat it!!!
Ciao and tight lines 7/10
-
Gotta run over them before they eat..give them a chance, I have had huge success with mine. The big fish came on a UV purple skirted new Zulu Impi with the same weight added as the TT. Also running very well! :nobs:
-
The Big T Zulu Impi that caught the big fish has exactly the same weighting as the new TT. Runs amazing with new UV skirts and catches big fish :nobs:
Note the snapped hook and parted leader loop onto the pigtail. Fish got wrapped and when the body straightened it broke everything. Came in attached only by the pigtail embedded in its tail and a few wraps of the leader...lucky angler unlucky fish!
-
Trevor,
Nice size marlin this season, well done on your Big T lure - TT designs (clap)
Tight lines
Cheers,
Awie

Released a young black of 100kg early this morning and had a few Dorado jump on board. Sea was horrendous and the crew fragile. Hoping for a blue or two in the next two days..weather looking good. Pics later!
-
Reel Magic charters does it again running two boats for 6 clients at moment and our second boat Boyance skippered by Hansie Van Wyk landed two fish of 219 and 285 kg on standup. Our 2nd 600 pounder this season. Reel magic had a good blue on for a while before it threw the hooks. Some awesome big fish around at the moment. Pity the clients are not up to the pace resulting in a tail wrap and a DOA due to the time taken to get the fish up. Heres to hoping for some more good days and clients who can stand the pace!
-
Blue marlin release for RM Charters on Boyancy angler Vitaliy R pics to follow.
-
Todays fish on Boyancy for Reel Magic Charters
-
Went 1-1 on a black on live bait on Reel Magic today making it a first marlin for 5 of the anglers in our 6 man group for the trip. Fortunately the unlucky one got a fish with us last year...full house!
-
Change over day today with two airport runs so no fishing for us and a huge pity! Sounds like all the boats got fish today with up to 3 fish on a boat..damn! Merry Christmas all! :rck"
-
Well when marlin fishing is bad it really sucks! Have dropped 5 blues in 3 days and have run out of expletives. Thank goodness for a nice Yellowfin for a lucky 11 year old(Conrad) who's dad has given him 2 days charter for great school marks. Fished with us last year on his first sea outing and caught 3 tuna species. Upped his game somewhat this year with the biggest fish on Reel Magic for any 11 year old (58kg). Fought it like a champ unaided..great effort. Had a massive blue up that didnt hook up and it may have been just as well as its unlikely he would have managed. Next time Conrad!
-
That's a man size :yft: , can you imagine the stories back at school. Great stuff.

I've tried calling you on the radio for 2 days but no response??
-
Been working south away from the mob, probably out range!
-
Launched out of zini yesterday, went high points.
-
Great start to 2013 went 1-3 on blues dropping a 350 and a bomb in the 600-700lb range!
-
Well we had a gale from the NE today and most boats ran home early! Stuck it out with her majesty and managed two nice wahoo and dropped a window shopping stripey. The bad news is that there is a huge piece of green water that has moved into the area stretching to past the 800m line! No idea where we will fish tomorrow but will report after the day.
-
Nice catches ...
-
Due to the ruckus going on around the SADSAA classic and other issues my booking for the SADSAA classic has been moved to other dates and Reel Magic is available for charter for the comp again! Any interested parties can contact me via the web email address at trevor@reelmagic.co.za .
-
Out today on the small boat in pretty rough NE conditions on 30 lb. Dropped a small stripey that fell off after pulling some line. sry Good bird life and flying fish and water in North is purple. No sign of the blues but they must be out there!

Great response - thx UA boat chartered for SADSAA CLASSIC!

Hi Trevor, we haven't received the video of Michelle's stripey. Did you post it to us?
Many thanks,
-
So long ago, sorry you didnt receive it, but if I said I would then Im sure i would have. At R Bay now and cant cut another disc here. Give me an address and we can get you one later!
-
So much for a predicted great weekends weather last week. Pouring rain and strong wests put paid to my charters this weekend and resulted in the onset of severe Cabin Fever :cnfzd :cnfzd :-( :craz: :craz:
Water is looking good and some fish came out off Sodwana just before the rain! itching to get out but will have to wait a few days..till then!!
-
Great to be able to put a report together after a break at home and an enforced break due to weather. Out today on the small boat on 30 lb and tagged and released a nice stripey. Couple of other fish released too, so not too shabby for a peach of a day with no wind.
-
nice to see after the dry spell, well done (clap)
-
Action packed day today , dropped a good blue around 500lb on a jump off and then two stripeys before 10am - thanks to a 5m swell and shitty sea no doubt. Good news is the current has pushed in hard with the water shooting up by 3 degrees from 25 this morning to 28 by evening. First time weve seen plenty birds working on schools of skippies and small yellowfin the whole season. Hope its not a flash in the pan. Water and conditions looking great after the last 3 weeks of poor fishing! BRING IT ON!
-
Fishing in Richards Bay at the moment is like being in a automatic wash cycle..stops, starts, spins and plenty fresh water rinses. So glad to have come out on the right side of a stripey attack for a change with a first timer release of a 60 kg stripe today. Best thing of all was the dry cycle and the appearance of sunshine...at last! Some other fish dropped while Bouyance got a small blue and a black of 200kg odd was also caught on Contour. Looks good for tomorrow apart from the low Barometer..
-
What a day today, released a Black at 6am and a Blue at 9am to make it a charter grand slam with a 3 species of marlin:stripe, black and blue in two days for three anglers from up country on a belter day with calm sea and no wind! Beers all round for a full house!! It cant be beaten anywhere in the world :nobs: :fshn: :fshn: :fshn: :billf: :billf: :billf:
-
:win: :win: Well done!!!! :cgrts: :cgrts:

Bagged another blue on 30lb today only problem, it didnt make the 400lb mark Im looking for. Fish of 120-130 kg doesn't know how lucky it is. Twice the current record but shes swimming free. Trying to be patient and looking for a fat girl. Next time! :rck"
-
Went 1-1 on a Blue of 132 kg on 30 lb again today on Reel Magic out of Richards Bay. Unfortunately it tail wrapped and died arriving DOA after a 4 hr fight to lift it from 350m on bottom. Not a happy chap even though its an SA Record. Out tomorrow looking for a better fish!
-
Well done trevor. Gr8 fish. Can't do much about a tail wrape
-
Rest day today! - Good luck to all the teams in the inter provincial here this weekend, hope :billf: bite! :tite
-
Thanks Trevor, so far things seem to work for us, my buddy Robin that fished with you on Friday did well today on our boat.
Cheers
Juan
-
Had Sean and the Hotline crew as charters the last few days on the SADSAA and with prefish have released 2 blacks and 2 blues one of 650lbs in 5 days fishing!! Awesome stuff and its looking better out there now with big fish back again!! :nobs: :FST: :fshn: :fshn: :fshn: :fshn: :billf: :billf: :billf: :billf:

Was out yesterday with the guys from Umfolozi casino on a peach of a day. What a great bunch of guys, just a pity the water has gone green on the inside after the big south westers early in the week. Water blue and 29 deg over the 600 with lots of birds and bonnies and little yellowfin. Big girls were quiet so we went hunting for the big yellows in the deep and found them. Had a shoal of 7-8 big yellows on the surface feeding but when we went over them they could be seen on the echo sounding with little interest in the lures. Will be back with plenty bait to see if we can do them in Cape Town style. :yft: :yft: :yft: :yft:
-
After an awesome break surfing my home break "Supers", golfing on our immaculate courses around St Francis, and hunting in the best area in SA its time to get back to the ocean for the last stint of the season. Some good movement on the Yellowfin side with 3 nice fish from 70 - 85 kg landed at St Lucia last week. Going to be some big blues around with them. Back in R Bay on Saturday 23rd to finish off the 2012/2013 season!
-
Heard of a nice blue :billf: dropped 2 days ago on one of the few boats doing the trip deeper. Everyone chasing :wahoo: now. Back tomorrow to charge the deep line and look for some fat ones. Weather looks good for the early part of next week. Reports imminent!! :yft: :yft: :billf: :billf: :corrct:
-
Tight lines. be grateful you not fishing the pe tuna classic. 45 boats, 1 x 13kg yellowfin for the fleet yesterday. Min weight 15kgs so not even ont he prize list yet. eish.
-
Well they managed one fish of 15,8 kg that just made the minimum 15 kg mark. Real pity because the guys got good sponsorship this year and a lot of effort goes in. Plenty shoal yellowfin in Cape Town. Think water been super warm (26 deg) and the current pushed down far south this year. Sure there will be a late run as the fish do the return migration up the coast. Good few marlin caught in C Town this season!
Back to R Bay today ....will report soon!
-
Finally forced our way out on a pretty nasty sea and lasted till 12pm when a sick one forced us back. Not before dropping two marlin within 300m of one another. Water not epic but good temp and obviously some fish around. Two fish released at Mapelane and 3 nice tuna landed in the 80's. Looks like a few good fish starting to rise. All thats needed is some fishing weather!
-
:envy You guys have such a nice long season.
-
Went 1-1 on a stripe on Reel Magic and dropped a 170 lb yellowfin at the boat 2 days ago. Then boated a 87kg/200lb Yellow yesterday. Spent the whole day chasing big Yellos under the birds. Must have seen at least a hundred that would not eat a lure. Chunked for an hour and had them around the boat, totally refused to eat a baited hook. When these fish turn on its going to be chaos!
-
Happy!
-
:shk 87 kg......Now thats a dream tuna to catch in those waters :yft:
-
Hi Trevor some nice catches. The big tuna has finally arrived. I must certainly get down there very soon. Good to see some marlin still around. Enjoy chomma!!!
-
I was happy with 15kg. That is awesome well done nice fish.
-
awesome... I am really happy for you and your customers!!! :happ: congats....
-
Smiles all round! :corrct: thx

Cant wait for this weather to blow over. Have the lads from Big T for the weekend and will be chasing anything that moves out there. Hopefully our yellow finned friends are still out there and hungry. Here kitty kitty.. :yft: :yft: :yft: :yft: :billf: :billf: :billf:
