So after a 6 or so months of planning the 21/12/11 had arrived and we were. 3 cars towing 2 boats and a venter trailer. We left at 4.30am and stopped a number of times before reachng the border as we knew that the border would be quiet still. When we get to the border my brother mentions that my dad KZTE that he was driving was making a serious rattling sound from the wheels. Turns out that all four wheels were completely loose on the verge of falling off in the next few kms, boy did we hear some lovely choice words from my dad swr <: (bat about his employee who forgot to tighten the wheels. After tightening up the wheels we were back on the road after crossing the borders with no issues. Just 10kms from our over night stop over at Honey Pot my father in law falls a sleep behind the wheel and the car strays into on coming traffic and just so turns out to be a semi heading in that direction, his wife freaks out :shk and instead of grabbing the wheel she starts yelling and screaming swr <: which luckily wakes him and he looks up in time to swirve out the way and just misses the semi with the now swerving boat.......................shew that was 2 close calls & not a great start to the trip. So we call it an early night at Honey Pot to get much needed rest.
Next morning we up at 4am to get on the road ASAP as we knew we had to arrive at Inhassoro no later than 12 noon to get some supplies and making it across to BD point before high tide.
It was a long road and the 60kph zones when driving through the little villas was taking its toll in delaying and irratating us but we kept in high spirits with many snacks, sleep for some and the amazing scenery.
-
Morn Prego, this obviously part 1 of 20 parts - keep going I am very interested.
How did you prepare for-, and the baby handle the Malaria problem?
-
Eventually we arrive at the Inhassoro intersection at 12 noon we decide that one car will go into town and get cold drinks and bread supplies and the other 2 will stay and fill up the jerry cans for the boats and top up the cars. Wow was I in for a shock :shk with a 5 grand fuel bill at R15 per litre due to the poor exchange rate :unhap .
Anyways we make it down to the beach at Inhassoro and it looks to me that we a little late to make it through, if we wait we will only make it through round 10pm that evening we make the decision to try make the 35kms to our final destination and quickly deflated the tyres and off we go.
WHAT A STUPID DECISION...........................as we were soon to find out.
About 20kms in the sand starts to get really soft as it seems the tide has not made it up that high up the beach in a while, which was both a good thing and a bad thing and the Syang Yong pulling our boat gets stuck to the chassis. We try pull the Syang Yong out but to no avail. We take the boat trailer off the Syang Yong hook the KZTE to it a bit of digging, pushing, pulling jumping and the KZTE comes free with the boat in tow. We all celebrate and move on but those celebration are short lived as 2kms down the beach the KZTE gets stuck down to the chassis. We dig it out try tow with the other vehicles but this thing is going now where. At this point we all freak out :shk cause we think we in real trouble here and that the tide is going to come in and sweep us up. Hence no photos at this point.
Well after much deliberation we decide to launch Sea Quest as there is no way we going to make it towing her in this soft sand, so I quickly prep all the plugs, fuel, trailer drop her on the sand and now we try and straighten her up on the sand ........that poor KZTE was up to her doors in the water trying to pull the boat straight eventually we succeed but there is just not enough water to get her in & at this time we realise the tide is not coming any further and at this time every one calms down a little and the cameras made there appearance.
We find an old log and boy was this thing a life saver. We knew it was a little long and that it might be weak but once it broke after the 1st attempt it shorten up and left us with the strong bit and it did the job and off I went.

Where are the fish?????????
-
Nice report Paulo keep the pics coming!!!!!!!!!
-
With "Paradise" in your subject heading I can only assume the fishing was great. Cant wait for the rest Paulo.
-
This is the attraction and beauty of visiting Mozambique. Every trip is full of surprises and an adventure.
-
Paulo I was so waiting for the report. At long last and by the first parts I can only say "Welcome to Moz boet!"
-
nice adventure. where are the fishies ;-)
-
So off myself and Ryan went making our way to the lodge on a heavily loaded boat with a sea that was a mess with the usual short Mozambican chop. While making our way we noticed that our convoy of cars had come to a halt again for a very long time again. So we decided to head in moor the boat in the lagoon and go and look for help from the lodge management. We eventually
find someone to take us to help my family out on the beach but as we get onto the beach they appear and tell us that they got horribly stuck again.
Pic 1. The KZTE stuck to its chassis :shk
Pic 2. The Syang Yong stuck trying to get the KZTE out :shk :shk
Pic 3. (The one they reluctantly did not want to show me) My Pajero sport pulling the Syang Yong, Toyota ans rubber duck out of the dwang :yipee: :yipee: :yipee: :yipee:
-
Now its proven, the only vehicle about not there that could have saved all the others, would have been a Land Rover Defender!
-
Gents it was definitely an awesome adventure we loved every minute. :win:
The fish pics will come, we not a charter company so our fishies come with a little story. Pateince men patience. :crzy
-
Tell us more
-
So after a hectic 2 days of traveling hectic & hair raising stuff we had arrived at our destination.
We decided that the next day would be a chilled day on the beach at the lagoon to calm our nerves down.
Pic 1. our final destination and lodge
Pic 2. our view for 2 weeks
Pic 3. chilling on the beach on the lagoon side
-
While getting some much needed relaxation on the beach one of the local fisherman beached their so we went and check his catch out.
He had caught a GIANT guitar fish, grouper and what seemed like a grey shark.
What's sad is that they now target the sharks as they get paid 7000 Meticas (equivalent of R2300) per kilo of shark fin by the chinese in Inhassoro.
I thought of a lot of you rock and surf boyz who would just love to have this bad boy on the end of your line :-(
But such is life and these guys need to make a living too :-(
-
Great report Pregs !
Can't wait to read it all !
-
That after noon I just could not wait any more so I loaded the rods and only 3 of us went out. We got on the water at 2.45pm and got to the 1st reefs which are 10kms out but the water was pretty flat so I thought I would take a chance and take a long run up to 25m reef 40kms further out. The sea was flat but the short chop makes it difficult and uncomfortable to get up to speed.
We eventually got there just before 4 set the lines with our new out riggers & all around us are birds going mad we work the birds for half an hour but nothing and I'm about to call lines up when bang go the riggers :sreel: :sreel: :sreel: :sreel: . As the fight ensued the wind picks up after a boxing match of 20 mins we boat some nice YFT. No time for pics we quickly clear the deck and off we go racing back as we have 50kms to get home and its now nearly 5pm.
About 10kms from home I see we still have some sun light left I decide to pull out the light rods and do 1 run over 2 reefs. On approaching the last reef bank off goes the PURPLE halco close in :sreel: :sreel: :sreel: :sreel: :sreel: . I pull the fish close to the boat quiet easily but once at the boat it seems to realize its in trouble and bolts off again this happened 3 or 4 times when eventually I upped the drag on the little TLD10 got the fish on board again cleaned the decks.
We made a pass by the chalet waving in celebration but did not get a response. As we morred the sun set and it was dark.
On arrival to our chalet we were ready to celebrate our catch  :frid instead we got a UIT k** PARADE swr <: of note for not having our radio on and arriving in the dark.............................EISH my bad :cnfzd
Not bad for an hours work just a ** long ride

Any of the marks work for you Prego?
-
One thing I learned with my family from this holiday is that there is no such thing as a "fishing holiday with family" but rather a "FAMILY HOLIDAY with some fishing" as the ladies and my son are not so keen to go on the boats as they get really sick :-(
The next day was enjoyed by the pool with the kids and the adults for that matter having a ball.
Unfortunately that day we witnessed a boat capsize :shk
-
Place looks awesome Paulo.
-
Sorry could'nt resist :crzy
After the swimming that seemed to have flatten my sons batteries so he went to dodo( sleep ) I saw the gap asked for pinks slips and of we went for another afternoon session. This time I packed only the light rods. Off we went to the flats deeper out and found the birds working with bonnies, skipjack & ELT hitting the flying fish which are in abundance. This was a lot of fun on my little excellors.
Pic 1. on double up
Pic 2. still on
Pic 3. Eish no more double up
-
:hyst: :hyst: :hyst: What cuased the boat to capsize maybe a very very big wave? :hehe:
-
The deep marks we had worked on and all deep fishing was very off with green water and a brown organisism on the surface, even the big boys off Baz battled those 2 weeks but the flats fishing was good and fantastic fun on light tackle.
After chasing the birds and having fun with the ELT we decided to troll and get some Couta (my nemesis), an hour in and we happy with 4 fish getting 3 on the same PURPLE halco. After this day the PURPLE halco was named "coach put me in"
1. Me with my nemesis all be it a rat
2. Another baracuda
3. Ryan with another of the many rat couta
-
Next day was Xmas and my birthday and even though we were in the tropics father xmas made it out there to drop pressies and a cake off for the kids and we spent an awesome day on the beach just enjoying the kids and all their new & old toys.
That thing of "its my party and I'll do what I want" well that didn't work for me needless to say no fishing on my b-day :-(
-
Well xmas was over and the next morning the sea was flat and I thought it would be perfect for the kids and ladies to get a pull and maybe get the fishing fever I have. Unfortunately only one of the ladies made it on board but all the kids joined. We went to the closest 3 reefs quickly put out "coach put me in" and some of his friends who seemed to travel all this why just to watch him do his magic. A few minutes in and bam :sreel: :sreel: :sreel: yip you guessed "coach put me in" goes screaming off. I quickly grab the rod call my son over so he can aid me in reeling and pulling the fish in but he was having none of it. So I pass the rod over to our star junior Matthew who at 5 he just loves to be out there pulling fish. He makes quick work of that fish, we set the lines again and not even 10 minutes bam :sreel: :sreel: :sreel: but surprisingly this time not our trusted PURPLE halco but one of his entourage. Young Ryan has a good battle. We bring the fish in and we now have got some really green faces on board with my son already fast asleep on deck so we call it a day. Again for an hour or so and a short ride out can't ask for much more. w;k
1. So flat they sitting on the bow waiting for a pull
2. My son the not so keen boater
3. Matthew the champ on the boat
-
fantastic report bru...I'm looking forward for reading all the episodes of the report
congrats again on the catches and the trip
-
Everyone seemed more comfortable once on terra firma again.
What better way than to finish the day with some R&R (tipo tinto) and an awesome sunset
-

100% but those faces are priceless. What you are sharing with them can never be replaced by any fortune.
-
Sorry here those pics.
-
The following day the wind was up so I decided to take everyone to Vilanculos to show them the city the scenery and scout for future venues for future trips.
We ended up having lunch at another South African owned resort called "Aguia Negra" what a view of the 2 islands Magaruque & Benguera while enjoying a fabulous meal, My sister in law enjoying her delicious crab curry.
Off course the boys just had to have a swim.
When we returned to Inhassoro the tide was almost up and again we tempted fate with some Dakar rally antiques doing 80-100kph on the soft sand right on top and towards BD point off camber and we made another nerve racking pass. :craz:  s

Fantastic report Prego. Cant wait for the next instalment.
-
Great report Prego ... please keep it coming.
I've even got SWAMBO looking/reading over my shoulder when I tell her that the next post is here ... (clap) (clap) (clap)

Next morning the wind was still howling, so after a HUGE breakfast we rounded out the troops and decided we would spend a day tubing and wake boarding on the lagoon side. It turned out to be a great day with great fun on the water, great company and a little thinking out side the box to turn a great day into a glorious day.
While boating and just enjoying swimming and enjoying the 30c clear water I noticed a local paddling up and down, I called him over to see what exactly he was doing/catching turned out to be squid. This is when I had a light bulb moment and thought like our own moderator here on UA WK :resp: . Not that I have such tackle but one makes a plan with odds and ends to wet a line. We manage to put 2 bass rods together and whats amazing is that the small fish we caught still put a smile on ones face young and old, thanks Gareth :rck" .
The kids and even us had a ball, maybe you guys can help with 2 of the species below. I know the 1 st is a flat head.
-
I think the second one is a juvenile emperor.
-
Some more
Even I managed big smile with a small fish
-
It was getting late and every one was really tired after a glorious day spent on the lagoon and decided to head back to the lodge but with all this squid I glanced at my brother and he knew exactly what I was thinking. So he and I and his older son Matthew and my young brother in law stayed out. We moved the boat into deeper channel in the lagoon at about 6 meters. My brother and I both put out 2 big baits all be it on the light rods and the 2 boys persisted with the small hooks. The boys kept loosing baits as they were to slow on the strike. It was a good lesson and time for them. The sun had just about set when all hell breaks loose and my little TLD10 goes off at a rate of knots :sreel: :sreel: :sreel: :sreel: :sreel: :sreel: :sreel: :sreel: :sreel: :sreel: :sreel: :sreel: :sreel: :sreel: :sreel: :sreel: :sreel: :sreel:
We all looked shocked cause we didn't expect for such big fish to be in the lagoon. Well to say I have never head a reel scream that fast and that long is an understatement. My brother picks up the rod looks down at the spool looks at me with a very worried face and shouts :shk "follow the Fish" as I ablige turn the engines on, it went dead quiet .................................. ...
...
The fish was gone either bitten off or just the line that broke just before the swivel, we will never know what/ why/ how big but one thing we do know is that we have never seen a reel been spooled that quickly.
What an end to an epic day made from nothing and no expectations
-
Nice pics, nice report, nice family. Well done
-
Following day was to be spent on BD island which was a 10km boat ride out. Luckily for our ladies and the 2 young boys who tend to turn green when on the water it was super flat as it was low tide and there is a bank that stop the water rushing in.
Again we tried to get the ladies interested in fishing with giving them casting lessons and maybe a fishy or 2 but when we took a small stroll on the island we knew the chance of catching anything would be slim as what we came to find is the sad but truth about Mozambique. A group of fisherman live on this island fishing day in day out using nets and these guys are raping the ocean with ray, shark, turtle & fish carcasses littered all over :-(
Besides these sad scenes we still managed to enjoy the warm and still water.
1. The flat water which was a blessing for our green members
2. Mommy learing to cast (this was a good hours entertainment)
3. 7000Mets per kilo
-
Some more of the devastation caused by the nets
-
That same day once we arrived at the lodge I had to rush into town to get some more supplies, found this on the beach along the way left behind by the netters as it is now illegal to hunt turtles. She drowned in the nets and was left to rot on the beach and for the yellow billed kites to feed on.
Sorry for the poor quality both these photos were taken from my cell phone.
-
Following day we made our way out to the reefs just in front of the lodge 10kms out. Set the spread and it wasn't long till we had our first screaming reel :sreel: :sreel: :sreel: :sreel: :sreel: :sreel: :sreel: :sreel: :sreel: :sreel: and yip you guessed 'coach put me in' was quickly into the action.
Young Ryan did battled with one of the bigger baracuda of many we had caught this trip, and after15 minutes the tired youngster boated a sizaaa toothy critter.
We quickly set the spread with the PURPLE halco still in the Barracuda mouth shouting "coach put me in" but no one was keen to play dentist with the faisty baracuda in the hatch. Not long and we had another take :sreel: :sreel: :sreel: the boyz cleaned up the other lines but upon doing so managed a tangle and kept pulling on the tangled line and with the fishes next run boom slack line and fish and lure gone.
Well by this time we were able to retrieve our trusty PURPLE halco and he was back in the game, a few minutes later bang we in the races again my brother manages to bring another big barracuda to the boat but true to form the fish skriks when it gets a glimpse of the boat :shk or maybe it was the gaff :dunno: w;k and off it goes my brother instead of dropping the rod tip pulls on the fish and it opens the hooks. swr <: some more choice words.
What happened next was a devasting blow to us, we quickly set the lines again, not long after I notice the line that "coach put me in" was attached to had gone slack, we quickly reel in to find that our trusty PURPLE halco was AWOL, it seems that a monster toothy critter had got the better of him, at least he died a valiant death in the line of fire.............................................................
RIP "coach put me in" PURPLE halco.
After our minute silence we regained our composure and I quickly searched for a purple replacement and I found "coach put me in" son a smaller model purple halco, put him in the game and true to from purple was the colour of the season and juniour was screaming off with what seem a great fish, the fish surfaces and we ID it as a Queenie I quickly put away the gaff to grab the fish and as I do this she throws the hooks................boy are we having a shocker of a morning.
Luckily no last lures this time, lines in again and bang, bang :sreel: :sreel: :sreel: :sreel: :sreel: :sreel: some quick strikes with some more rat couta and our only fish on a red/white Halco which end up being a Natal Snoek/Queen Mackerel and then the final fish of the day goes off to the races :sreel: :sreel: :sreel: :sreel: :sreel: :sreel: :sreel: :sreel: :sreel: :sreel: :sreel: :sreel: :sreel: :sreel: a strong fish turns out to be a very sort after species a Prodigal son and as per usual when there is a new species involved my father in law ends up being the one at the rod.
In the end we had a awesome day on the water in a short space of time and we made our way back to celebrate the new year.
-
New years day was spent at the pool with a little kop seer and just relaxing after a night of lots of Tipo Tinto and 2M.
I had check wind finder to see what the weather was doing on the 2nd Jan as it was to be our second last day in Paradise and I was keen to get a bill. So next morning dawned I looked out my window at 4am and it looked do able. I got up and quickly woke the others.
Boy looks can be deceiving we had a horrible short chop but I was adament to get a bill and we kept going towards the Light house off Baz at a very bumpy bone jolting 25kph. After almost 2 hours we arrive and we find a dozen or more boats working. We get super excited and quickly set the lines, birds are going crazy, bonnies all over the place, the excitement continues ...
3hrs in and not a nibble not a fish on the sonar, charter captains and private boats all scratching their heads as they pass us. We work all the way down to sail fish bay but all I got was my family complaining how I dragged them out of bed to presumably fill our hatches and get a marlin when all we got was a sun tan or sun burn for some.
To make things worse I drop my Oakleys into the green water duh swr <: ...................................maybe Duarte will find a Black cruising with Oakleys soon. :dunno:
Well after 8 hours at sea and working the area from Light house to sail fish bay I think about going further south towards V mile and 2 Mile but a look at the fuel situation and decide its home time.
Got back and boy was I miff :-( and :cnfzd as one can see in the pic below, as I drown my sorrows  , but I guess thats fishing.
Pic 2. is a perfect example of how not to tan and burn.
-
Our last day in paradise dawned and the tide was perfect to spend the day at Santa Carolina / Paradise island actually where survivor SA was held and where my parents spent their honey moon many moons ago. My wife and mother in law were not so keen on another boat trip so we stayed and my brother went on towed his boat to Inhassoro to launch from there and have a easy 14km boat ride to Paradise island.
How clear is the water there, just beautiful.
-
Back at BD point young Ryan had not been fishing on the last 3 or 4 outings and he came to me and said look at that water but after the day before blanking in style session I was not so keen but with a little arm twist I accepted and off we went for a short hour session. The sea was pretty flat and as we reached the reefs close in the wind picked up a little. Lines in we make a pass over the 1st 2 marks but things seem very quiet, the fish are there but not commiting. on approaching our 3rd mark Ryan starts to chum and true to form when this boy chums we get fish 2 minutes in and the reel :sreel: :sreel: :sreel: screams to life, I give Ryan the rod and a small Couta gives him a hiding, we boat the fish and the now completey crushed treble just falls out its mouth, I have never seen that before.
I quickly throw out the lures walk towards the helm and bang :sreel: :sreel: :sreel: :sreel: :sreel: :sreel: :sreel: :sreel: :sreel: :sreel: :sreel: :sreel: :sreel: :sreel: :sreel: :sreel: :sreel: :sreel:
I was up, I grabbed the rod and could feel this was a new model, head shakes and line peeling off, I battle for a good 10 minutes before I got an ID of the fish and yes it was the elusive Queenie, boy can this thing box. While fighting this fish we had dolphins giving us a show 2 meters from the boat and close to the fish I was fighting. The fish would come up then run forward and dive down, it did this a number of times giving me a good hiding.
After a tough 15-20 minutes I boated my best fish of the trip, man was I stoked.
I quickly got the hook out its mouth ready for some quick pics and a safe release for hopefully another angler to enjoy his sport another day.
And my skipper for the day
-
And with that the end of our trip, next morning we made our way back along the beach at 80kph and with things like this on the road we took it easy.
Hope you guys enjoy this report and are able to one day visit this beautiful area.

Thanks Reefz, Rockspider & Rustic Rainmain.
As soon as the Rand strengthens against the Metical we will return, until then local is LEKKER.
Well said. Incredible how it turned in one year. Not sure how we get the short end of the stick allways. 1 Year ago we got at worst 4.7 Mets to the rand.
-
What is the exchange rate now?
-
Yip last year my brother bought at 5.5
This year it was at 3 at the border and Maputo and at Xai-Xai and Inhassoro it was at 3.2. The petrol price was 48-54mets per litre. Obviously the higher you go the more expensive which is understandable. But do the math call it 50mets per litre divide by 3.2 and you paying R15.63. That's no laughing matter.
Heard guys at Pomene went into Massinga to get more fuel 2 of the 3 stations had run dry so the one with fuel pushed the price up they ended up paying R18 per litre
So till its back to at least 4.5 we will not return :-(

Nominated for Report of the Month.

Awesome report and some great catches!!! (clap) (clap) (clap) (clap) :happ:
