Title: D.I.Y Non Return Slides
Post by: Nemesis. on December 29, 2011, 08:44:08 PM
I used to buy Non Return Clips from off the shelf at a local tackle shop, but I found that they are always fitted with those crappy swivels, that tend to stretch and break when on to a good fish, and besides that, they have become quite expensive as off late. So I decided to fiddle around and make my own slides. This is a regular slide for live baits, for frozen/whole baits, I add a 1/4 Oz  to   1/2 Oz weight to the arm above the swivel.Thought I'd share how i make my slides, enjoy w;k

1.First step was sourcing the material, i managed to get hold of 2.0mm stainless steel rods from a friend, there after i purchased some 160lb power swivels and beads. The tools i needed were a side cutter, long nose pliers, flat head screw driver and a 8mm bolt.
2.Step two, measure a tag end of about 20cm on the wire rod, turn the tag end 5 and a half times around the bolt to create the loops of the non return slide

3.Step three, make sure the two ends of the wire rod face in opposite directions
(http://i1212.photobucket.com/albums/cc448/Bouser88/28122011475.jpg)
4.Step four   , now take your flat head screw driver   and evenly space the loops. Leave enough space for thick leaders to fit in between the loops.

5.Step five, now bend the locking loop in the tag end with a long nose pliers, this will be the loop that prevents your slide from opening up whilst shaking it down to the stopper.Make sure to sand   any sharp ends that may cut you off if the clip gets tangled.

6.Step six, now you need to bend two 90 degree bends, first one will be to the height of the locking clip or slightly longer, the second bend will make up the "arms" of the clip.

7.Step seven, insert your bead. The bead prevents the coil/loop section from collapsing whilst fighting a big fish. There after bend the   clips arm to your desired angled and length.

8.Step eight,Bend a loop in the arm to which your swivel will be attached
(http://i1212.photobucket.com/albums/cc448/Bouser88/29122011484.jpg)

9.Step nine, the final step. Twist 2 or 3 loops of the tag end around the clips arm.I opted to bend loops around the arm, rather then to braze the swivel loop closed, as i just don't trust that tiny bit of brazing to hold up against a big fish that might rap the trace around itself.

As a matter of interest, have you seen the way Zeyn bends his slide clips... ?

Thanks Tony, yes I've seen Zeyn's way of bending the clip, works like a charm, have done a few in that fashion as well :uarocks

Nice Post !!  :+ cred:

I make mine just like that , they are very strong .
One thing I can add : When you bend the coils ,let the rod [or in Nems case the Bolt] do the work , what i mean is ,  make sure not to twist the Tig rod .

Yep buddy, i always get the shivers tying a lekker trace to a swivel that is suspect, i even had swivels stretch a few MM!! <: Not a lekker thought to use R50 hooks, Skirts that cost R60 a pack, cable thats R70 a pack and then attach it to a 25cent swivel :lolo:

Do you guys reckon you can slide a carp head or suitably big bait for barbel in fresh water? :brbel:
Tunaman, what you think? I think casting distance would greatly improve.

Cheers,
Eugene

@ Nemesis what wire/rod is that exactly and have you put it to a test.

Are guys out there using different material,I have been told to use stainless steel tig welding wire or spring steel.

Thanks in advance for any feed back.

Hey Star, i think its called 2.0mm Tig Wire, they use it for welding. I do know guys also use 1.6mm tig rods, but i find it to be to thin. Tig wire is usually quite expensive,
but i managed to get some from free.
You can also purchase 2.0mm "Draw Wire" from most electrical shops which is cheap and works.
I've caught a few Diamonds, and some sharks in 10 to 30kg range with them so far, and i havent had a problem yet. I don't really slide much these days tho

Any information on how to make the stopper rings?

I just use a large forged/stamped split ring that wont bend out of shape and a swivel for a DIY stopper ring? But I'm sliding for edibles..

Thank Visenvryheid

Will keep an eye out for those. What is the purpose of the swivel on the stopper ring?
