Last night on ASFN they did a snipet testing 2 knots using both mono and Flouro to see at what point they would break.
The one knot was the Fig 8 and the second I did not get, needless to say the one I did not hear was the stronger of the 2.
:cnfzd
Did anyone else catch the show and know what the other knot was?

I'll check tonight !

Palomar

:tkx:
First time I have heard of it, any idea how?
Tut maybe?

Below are knot strength tests done by various Magazines (scientific tests) over the years...
It shows that both the Palomar and Fig 8 lose strength with the thicker diameter mono that you use... the Palomar slightly less strong than the Fig 8. 85% VS 81% is negligible I suppose.
My issue with the Palomar is that it needs to be doubled before inserting it through the eye of the hook... smaller diameter lines, no problem, but with 1mm line, it becomes a mission - you have to kink the mono to get it through?
I haven't seen the Show you're talking about, but it should be interesting to hear what they say?
The Palomar is certainly the knot of choice to tie Braid to terminal tackle though...

The Palomar has the advantage of having double line over the connection, and for light tackle it is a good knot, for me it is a fig. 8 knot for offshore all the way, for bass fishing I prefer a palomar knot.
Note that with offshore you have a leader at least 4 times the breaking strain of you mainline and the reason for this is mostly because of abrasion resisitance and so knot strenght to your terminal tackle is not as important as the connection of your main line to leader.
With light tackle (estuary/bass) you have a light leader sometimes the same breaking strain as your main line.
So your applications are completely different and you need to use the right methods for the right techniques.
Look at the posted chart and see the difference on the albright knot with light vs heavy and you will see that it is an exccelnt knot for light tackle, but on a heavy leader it is no good.
Also note that you can make a loop with a fig. 8 knot which you cannot do with a palomar.
-
With lighter nylon I double the line and do the figure 8 strong as hell.
-
I Much prefer the Fig 8 over the Palomar for off shore. but the Palomar is a good alternative..
-
Ok just watched the show... not sure if we're comparing apples with apples here... never saw the "Fig 8" knot that they were testing... many guys call the Uni Knot a Fig 8 knot? Never saw how they made the knot either... :dunno:
The PALOMAR (not polamer, Andre!!) is a good knot in low diameter lines, according to proper line strength tests done on machines; but the Fig 8 (Centauri knot) properly done is slightly stronger in larger diameter mono.
-
Thanks for clearing that up Reefz

It's what I suspected... just watched a taped ASFN show in which they test the "Fig 8 knot". The one chap's 'Fig 8' was actually a Uni knot...!? duh C'mon guys, at least get the names right!!!
Also the tests thay did to compare the Fig 8 (Centauri) with the Palomar, was a 2 turn Fig 8. We know from scientific tests done that a 3 turn Fig 8 is about 25% stronger than a 2 turn Fig 8.
The Palomar might well be stronger than the Fig 8 in lighter line, but as I said somewhere else, it's going to be VERY difficult to get a 0.8mm or 1mm line doubled through the eye of a hook, without kinking it badly.

Before everyone gets hopelessly confused about the "new Albright Special" knot which they talked about - don't! The "Albright Special" knot has been around for many years and all it is, is a different name for the Original Albright.
There are 2 types of Albright knots - the original Albright and the Modified Albright. The Albright Special is EXACTLY the same as the old original Albright. If you don't believe me, Google it and you will see.
Even Wikipedia says so!! duh
Nothing "special" about this knot at all, and nowhere near as good as a Modified/Improved Albright.
