Title: Trolling for the Taxman - You'll tip your Hat to this one!
Post by: strandloper on November 11, 2011, 07:54:35 AM
Following our recent experience with the Taxman whilst fishing with Nikao, and his subsequent confirmation of the love for Hats that some of the sharks have off Durban, I thought that a short Tutorial on how to rig a hat for trolling could come in handy.

Some of the equipment needed for this rig would be:

One hat, preferably a broadrimmed leather and mesh hat.
Some 200lb and/or 400lb wire.
12/0 Big Game hooks or 10/0 Tuna hooks.
1mm Leader material
Nr 4 -6 Power Swiwels
Crimps
Heat shrink

To ensure that the Hat "swims" true when trolling, you have to start the rig at the fron end of the Hat.

1. Thread the cable (200lb or 400lb) or leader through just under the rim of the hat. Be sure that the you start from the bottom to ensure that the rim is "lifted" by the leader/wire

2. Pull the wire/leader through the centre of the hat and exit directly opposite the front entrance.

3. Thread the leader/wire through the rim exiting at the back end.

1.Once you have the hat rigged, add swiwel to the end of the leader, especially if using it as a tax evasion rig. THis rig, with only mono leader can be adorned with some feathers and trolled back in the spread to act as a detraction for the taxman. This is classified as Tax Evasion!!

What about doing a tut for the same bait but on a non-return slide clip for us land-locked folks? ...  :hehe: :hehe: ... could be referred to as "Sliding tax scales" ...  :hnthnt: :hnthnt:

1.If you would consider yourself a law abiding citizen and would prefer to have a tax audit or face to face meeting with the Taxman. I would strongly urge you to replace the leader with some 400lb wire.

2.Thread the wire through the hat in the same manner as the leader in post two and attached either 12/0 Big Game or 10/Tuna hook.

3. Once completed the rig should look something like this and should be attached with 1mm twisted leader to minimum 80lb mainline.

This rig could potentiall be modified to be used with a cap and also to be used in drift set-up.

In both instances a balloon should be inserted into that hat to aid with buoyancy.

Hope this aids with some of your tax issues.

PH,

As you recall, some of my assets was confiscated by the taxman  :-( ,  hence the use of the hat depicted.

I do believe that the leather and mesh hat will work better and if you add a Lions logo to it the Sharks might really go for it!  :creep:

Ok Ok, I'll do it.

Do you think we need to peel the carrot first to release some flavour in the water?

Viskop, peeluing your carrot before use is not recomended. Greasing it or covering it in rubber is the more readily accepted method. But please do not "Grate you carrot"

Just do not use one of Greg Norman's hats. The shark might get offended and jump into the boat  :hehe:

@viskop Rather avoid grating your Carrot or peeling it for that Matter they work much better if they are left Whole..... using a rubber is prefered but make sure it is one of the flavored ones as they help leave a sent trail for the fish to follow... :crzy

Strandloper, was just looking at your hat rigging again, I think you need to add a small weight under to act as a keel strip to ensure the hat runs true when trolling it.
The thing that really worries me, is that you will play with the shark instead of fighhting it properly and then a huge Tuna will come and snack your shark.
