I've got grapnel moulds from 4 to 10 Oz.
I have 5kg tig wire, 1.6mm
I've got 100kg lead.
I've got 10kg 1.6mm and 12kg 2mm spring steel .
What does Homie want - Nylon Graps - eish duh
Does somebody know how and what nylon to use to make Nylon grapnel sinkers?
how do you get them in there as well?
Please help me.

Hi Andries,
not sure about the Nylon question at all but I'd be happy to take the wire grapnels off your hands ... w;k ... 6oz, 7oz, 8oz and 9oz please ... :hnthnt:

Andries,
:rck"

@ Jakes - I'll make up a lot first week in Oct. Then we talk at a social or somewhere.
Send me a list, then I can plan a batch.
@ Hooch - thanks.
I'm using 2mm for guide wire when casting, but I'll get a 2.5mm tig rod and make another set.
The 2mm sit loose in the mold anyway, so it shouldn't be a problem.
@ HP, ya well, that's Homie, never satisfied with what we got he he he he

6 x 4oz

6 x 6oz
10 x 7oz
4 x 8oz
4 x 9oz
or as close to these Qty's as you can get.

Andries, I have drilled some off my moulds out to put in bigger dud wires. I think to 3.5mm and then I do the same as Hooch said. Otherwise on the moulds that I have not drilled I make the sinker with the normal dud and then drill the sinkers hole bigger. I put the drill bit into some vasaline to lube the drill bit otherwise it will get stuck in the lead and end up braiking of.
-
Thanks Fritz
I've broken many a drill like that.
At this time I set my drill as slow as possible and 'cut' rather than drill holes.

Great tip, Fritz. I have been struggling with the same problem and will try it the next time I make my own graps. +cred

Imagine the houding at home:
"Honey, the boys and I are going to make sinker in the garage.
a Case of beer and a bottle of Vaseline and off we go"

Eish never thought of it like this . Social = group of mostly men getting together at a picnic spot . Having a couple of drinks ,slapping around some Boerie , showing of their tackle and bragging about their rods . :hyst: :hyst: :hyst: :hyst: :hyst: :hyst: :hyst: :hyst: :hyst: :hyst: :hyst: :hyst:

This is how i do it Andries , once the molten lead is poured in the mold and has set, remove the s/s wires , drill the holes out to the desired size of the weed-eater nylon , slow speed on the drill and keep oiling the bit as well ,stops it heating up and sticking to the lead , put the weedeater nylon thru the holes and like mentioned use a punch to flatten the lead at the holes , u can either trim the nylon to correct length before or after , so u can have nylon grapnels with either long or short legs ,i make mine with short legs so that they actually dont stick in the sand/rocks and still allows the sinker a bit of movement so that the bait is not stuck in one spot all the time and can drift around a bit , specially on sandy beaches , also the shorter nylon legs act like spines and bounce off the rocks instead of getting hooked up in a crevice or hole. w;k

Right - will be casting lead tonight - he he he
@ ICS - that video looks like DupZN.

i freeze the nylon weed eater gut after cutting into the size i want , then the molten lead must not be more than 700 degrees celcius , then its easy the nylon does not mealt , my mould have large holes to accomodate the nylon
-
by lowering the core temp of the nylon , it prevents it from meltin but you have to quickly remove them and dunk in water
-
There is a company in Cape Town that makes the correct weedeater gut. They sell to a couple of guys here in CT that make sinkers. i helped them out with some red dye once upon a time. Can get the name and contact details for you if you want. I reckon if the lead is not too hot you should be able to pour with the gut in the mould. I like Dons suggestion of cooling the gut first though. Will definitely help. Nylon is pretty tough stuff though!

i buy mine from T Line in Somerset west- dirt cheap
-
Angler1 has the best option , They are significantly cheaper than other places like Builders warehouse .
Use the 3.5mm .
I use Parafin for lube , maybe its just me but it I have found it to work beter than any any other lube .
-
depending on what the mould looks like this is how i do it. red TLine ask for the nylon sinker red cord , not the orange one its not as hard and it melts . precut all your nylon to the length you want bend them into a V open mould, slide nylon through hole in each side of the mould, close -pour with soft clean lead wait for a few seconds then open one side only and lift out sinker .my one girl that works for me does about 200 a morning 6oz and 7 oz . if the mould gets too hot puor a sinker keep it closed with sinker inside and dip the whole thing in water .there will be no explosion as the water doesnt get into the mould and evaperates with the heat but it must be full and close .
post a pic of the mould you got .

Thanks guys for all the proposals.
I do not want to drill out my moulds to accommodate the 3.5mm plastic, so will be routing it via the drill press and then centre punch.
I'll ask T line for a roll or two when i order some tapered leaders again.
Photo's of the moulds will come along when i do a little pictorial.
Thanks again.

Andries
Got the same problem with my moulds, my solution was as follows:
To drill the hole use the drill at full speed and add a little grease or h/duty oil to the bit. I have some white Litium grease laying around so I use that, spray it on the drill bit and bob's your uncle.
Just don't force the bit.
