I have been trying new knots recently, just because, and I've found a combination that holds and is arguably easier and faster than a double bimini and catspaw
What I do to double the braid is plait it ( http://www.fishnet.com.au/library/knotsrigs/plaitingadouble.html (http://www.fishnet.com.au/library/knotsrigs/plaitingadouble.html) ) for at least a dozen cycles. Make sure you lubricate well and once you're on the doubled loop twisty part, make sure to do it a max of 2 cycles as the braid grips to itself and may get stuck... Plenty spit required...
Then I join my loop to the mainline with a 10-turn yucatan knot. Tested it with 48lb backing to 0.55 seagrand and popped the braid above the knot after holding the DC's spool because its drag couldnt break it...
It's different, I'm confident in it and I've tested it on a reef 300-odd metres out and got everything back. :-)
The plait may look complicated but its all repetition of the same principle, easy to pick up
thought I'd share, use it, dont use it

Nice 1 Chris. Got to ask though... what made you lose faith in the Bimini-CatsPaw?

lost faith in a bimini in braid when I popped 50lb sufix on a locked sustain. Stitched it and couldnt break it!
catspaw is fine, bimini in mono is fine, but this looks a lot better and is much sleeker

Agreed... making a Double in braid, stitch is the way to go. Problem is you can't do it on the beach...

yup, thats why I thought I'd give the plait a try and it works just as well as a stitch it would seem

Hi guys
I read this (somewhat old) thread with interest and subsequently tried to follow and make this knot. My problem, however is that the moment I start pulling on the various ends as I make the plaits, I automatically start pulling the whole lot down and thus closing the loop.
How do I prevent this or do I understand the diagrams incorrectly? It will probably work better with rough rope but when I use nylon it slips down.

Sorry Kaspaas - I've never had reason to use this knot, so I can't help you... sry
-
Fat lot of help you are this afternoon! ha ha ha
Now I'll just have to get that bloody Bimini under the knee. I can do it with braid fairly OK, but it really is a case of knit one, slip one when I do it with nylon. Sigh.... and the Spider hitch is so damn messy. Simply doesn't look neat.

Have you tried the Braid stitch... it's easy and it's bulletproof!

@Reefman, with raid its OK. Tried it with nylon but the "knot" slips as you try to put tension on the line while plaiting it. That was my question. Is it possible to make this "knot" with nylon and if so, how do you keep it from slipping and thus close (decrease) the loop size?
-
Ok Kaspaas, tried the knot this weekend. It's pretty straightforward. The actual knot was designed to be done in mono for the Offshore guys. This knot is what Shagnrelease uses routinely to make a double in nylon. It's called the Aussie Plait.
What I found was you need to just pinch the first few braids between your thumb and forefinger, once you've done 2 or 3 crossovers, then you can start putiing real tension on the knot to make it compact without slipping.
In the beginning, if you pull the tag end tight, the loop will close a bit, by slipping...
What I found also to help stop slipping, instead of pulling the centre piece tight after the crossover, put tension on the opposing side piece rather, by pulling it sideways and upwards, thus compacting the knot. Dunno, but hope this helps?

Kaspaas... have you seen this video...? http://www.ultimateangling.co.za/index.php?topic=1714.msg15138#msg15138 (http://www.ultimateangling.co.za/index.php?topic=1714.msg15138#msg15138)
Explains everything perfectly!! :rotfl

Thanks Reef....will check it out.

Hey Kaspas, as Reefz has said just tension it a bit in the beginning and then I also do mine quite long so that it tightens up over a longer length. But nothing serious to it really, as in the video pretty straight forward.

Thanks guys. Will check it tonight at home. Our bloody Firewall at the office prevents me from opening any movie clips....sigh. swr

I've also been using the Aussie plait for a few years now.... can't do a proper bimini and the Aussie plait is so easy, especially at sea!
