This is the way i usually construct my swim bait trace. For this trace i used 175lb American fishing wire and two 12/0 4x Heavy Bandit hooks. I tried to keep the weight down on it, so if i do have a smaller swim bait, the trace wouldn't over power it and kill it, thus my reason for not constructing the entire trace of 3 twisted strands and keeping it at 5.5meters in total. Above this i attach a 3meter 1.5mm wind-on leader.
Here goes.
The first 3.5meters at the hook end are 3 twisted strands thick, then the last 2meters to the swivel are 2 twisted strands thick.
-
The three strands coming into two. I make the trace out of two lenghts of wire, one is 5.5meters and the other is 9meters. I twist the two together then fold the remainder 3,5meters back over the two twisted strands, so that its a solid trace without any joins.

The business end two 12/0's

Hope you guys enjoy this thread :clwn

How do you find those hooks??
Also can we see a few photos of the fish caught on these badboy traces please!!.....I'm a big fan of the old swim bait, there is no better bite, heart stopping excitement!!
-
(clap) ...Awesome .... :win: ....... :udman: ............ :shre:
-
Hey Bud, the hooks are very, very strong, but they get easily blunt, so need sharpening now and again. For the price, they are a steal. Unfortunately i only ever hooked two fish on swim baits, both times i got a serious hiding!! :unhap
-
AWESOME, keep at it....its a very frustrating game, you will loose 8 out of 10 fish, thats a fact, bite offs, fish swim into the line, double back and the list goes on,
Persistance pays off, I started swimming fish at the age of 16 and probably lost my first 20 odd fish!!!,
It gets easier as you go along,

Hey Chris, Its so that i can claim a record if need be.
Union Rules. No line greater than .60mm, maximum two "J" hooks and a leader+trace of not more than 9meters.
-
hey Wes those are some awsome catches.
nemesis.....i was looking at that exact same trace u posted (remember the one i hijacked from u?). its looking so sweet in my tackle bag.
on the last 2 skei trips, before i could even start fishing, i rigged up my 50 with a xtreme heavy and tied that same trace on.....waiting for the first swim bait. u know the story....caught forkall to swim.

Haha bru same one in these photos that you hijacked from me bhai. But any ways it was a good trade. Head light still going strong.
i know the feeling, any ways we will get some action this Summer on it, got a very good feeling about that :clwn

headlight?....what headlight?.....did u scale my headlight that i have been turning my house upside down for?.....blaady rubbish charo dog nation hahahahaha
now listen lytie.....im not sure about these bandit hooks....sure they look super strong and super sharp....but u think they gona hold on a TN50 locked drag with .60?
i can get these hooks cheap cheap cheap....im thinking of changing those bandits to this.
also....i have lost 6 fish now due to pinning the hook on the anal fin......next one is going on the dorsal
-
btw...these are SS tuna hooks. dont think u gonna open these bhai.....also wana change the swivel to a bearing swivel. i had a no.1 power swivel open up at mbolompo swim baiting.

M*****you gave me that headlight haha. Some serious hooks there!! Need a swim bait of atleast 30kgs plus for those.
I totally have faith in those Bandit hooks, but only the 4xh. Fought a fish for over 2hrs 45mins without them opening up.
Next time i see you, bring your stuff i'll make you a swim trace, was also worried about the swivel, next trip to BasilManning i'll stock up.
Maybe this Summer we must organize a UA social at Amatikulu if conditions are right :happ:
-
ya we all know you target "zambies" in amatikulu

i see.. :tite
-
Habib, i remember you fighting a Zambo at the banks for atleast 4hours and that other fish at Kosi, both times your hooks pulled, what size hooks did you use?
Was it the same Tuna Hooks? :hnthnt:
-
Great post Nemesis! (clap) +cred
-
ya lytie those fish really tore me. i dunno man...always having hooks pull. ask reefman...he knows about how my hooks pull from zambies...he witnessed one.
these new hooks im sure will do the job. i think pinning the swim bait towards the middle is gonna be a better option. also need to leave him to chow for a bit longer.
they always seem to take the bait in the middle. like CASTSA pic of that tail that was left?....it happened to me 4 times now that i reeled tails in. but the experienced swimbaiters always say pin the hook in the anal fin.
i wana try tugela this summer.
-
Hi :ult:
Just a quick one on that, I always pin my fish in the anal fin, but honestly don't use over sized hooks....These monster 20/0 and 5000/0 hooks are not needed, the smaller the hook, the easier the bait swims, and the smaller the hook the easier you can set it in the shark....
Do yourself a favor, this is for us that use mono topshot on swimbait reels, take your swimbait trace and walk 250m down the beach and let someone hold the rod and keep it tight, once the line is tight, place the hook point on your finger, then ask the guy holding the rod to strike and try set the hook.....Basically impossible, there is just too much stretch in the line, it wont in most cases even puncture your finger.....dont try with braid :cnfzd
Fact of the matter is simple, with a big strong THICK hook, you have a greater chance of it not setting and falling out especially if you still have a chunk of bait on the hook, smaller 10,11,12/0 better chance of it actually getting in the fish. Go with Strong, not big and thick.
Let the shark eat, without pressure,
Good luck!!

Here are the pics Zeyn is talking about... Port Durnford, April 2008. Spinner Shark Swim Bait...
-
eish Tony...those were the days hey?. seriously enjoyed that trip.
CASTSA....you know you not the first to tell me that and i honestly beleive u cos i know u an experienced swimbaiter.
another guy told me the same...he says those hooks of mine are too thick.
thanks wes...im gona take your advice.
so now guys.....any hook suggestions?
-
Sorry for my ignorance guys but how would you hook your bait onto this trace. Would you only hook one of the two hooks onto your live bait?

Yes Fanie, just one hook. The other one unhooked. Preferably just behind the Dorsal fin or in the Anal fin.
