Everyone says use a good strong jighead but unfortunately most of the time you can't test them in the shop because the packet is sealed. So what brands have you found that are strong
-
Owner are the best in my opinion. Ratfink have also been good.
-
Do Owner make jigheads or is it just the Nitro jigheads
-
Nitro is a Berkley product with Owner hooks

Brad save some cash and use the best hooks you have just attach a removable split shot onto the hook or 10cm ontop of the hook, works just as well IMO and is cheaper! You can buy removable split shots from any tackle shop look for the bigger containers, they have from a 1/16 ounce to a 1 ounce!

There are now so many jigheads and copies of the Berkley at half the price. Shop around just look for decent hooks.
-
The problem is that aside from nitros I have no clue what hooks are in the jig head. I'm also pretty sure that the shop will be a little upset if I start bending hooks and then pop the packet back on the shelf

my son uses mad mullets arrow head jig heads and he caught a 7kg black steenbras from the side with the hook still perfect very strong hooks.

HP you can normally tell just by looking at the hook whether it is going to be reasonable. Occasionally you may buy a lemon. The best indication is also often price. If the jig heads are cheap, then they are using cheap hooks. The strength of the hook is dependant on what you plan on using it for. If you are fishing for big strong fish, then you need very strong hooks. If you are fishing for small species, then it isn't as crucial. I like the Berkely Nitro range, they are expensive, but very reliable. I also use a lot of Bimini Jig Heads, which are manufactured in SA by a guy down in Cape St Francis. His prices are reasonable and his product is good.
WK the only thing about using split shot is that you get a different action out of the soft bait that you are using. By fitting it onto a jig head it swims straight and has a more predictable action. remaining upright. With split shot it can twist, turn upside down etc. This can be good in some scenario's, but not all.
