Title: Casting big throw baits
Post by: deezynking on August 11, 2011, 12:27:43 PM
hi guys
i need to learn how to throw, throw baits now. especially the big throwbaits.
i suck at this.
tackle loomis sharky+saltist 50 +.50line
7oz sinker - macky head + cutlet bait and i only got like 40mts.
put an 8oz got less distance.
grap sinkers used.

i tried a double sardine with mbonnie fillet, got like 40mts as well with a 7oz.
the lighter the sinker, the bigger the overwind. 7-8oz was fine.
is ther any techniques compared to chucking a normal 8-9oz for sliding.
its a huge difference.

Practice! Try making your baits more streamlined and clipping your sinker. Also make sure your action is smooth just a sinker is far more forgiving on your technical mistakes than a sinker and bait

Homie has got some videos of throwing Big baits somewhere?!?!  <:

This is what we use to practice....

Conveyor belt... 8oz. Remember the biggerb the bait, the bigger the sinker needed to maintain the spool revolution...

So, it's 8oz bait, 8oz sinker = 16oz throwing... this is dangerous to do on any rod, so you need to be careful... very smooth lob action. If you jerk it, you'll snap your rod...

Thanks Marthin ...may i ask what size Frigget ? length ?...Thanks
Title: Re: throwing with big throw baits or decent throw baits.
Post by: Marthin on August 11, 2011, 02:25:21 PM
it's not massive... i've had 2 ined successes, or kinda successes, one was a big stingray, broke leader at the mountain after 2 hours, one was a bronzie... both were on smaller frigates....

I look for a frigate about the length of a decent pilchard... but then they are much rounder.... about 22 - 25cm.  i use a double J trace, and hook the frigate on exactly the opposite way you would if you were sliding it. head facing down.  clip those little pecs and tail off, and then i cable tie the trace at the head and also by the second hook, to make sure everything runs in a "straight stripe"....

with a circle this drops down to about 50m 60 max, as i havent perfected bait presentation clipping a circle, it's always flapping in the wind!

Another thing to remember when throwing big baits is to tighten your cast control knob to start with, otherwise it's bunch time.

@Reefman - what do you mean by wind down your cast control closed to start with? Hope I'm not being doff here, but if you don't ask, you neva find out  :dunno:

On the side of the reel is a small knob that can be tightened or loosed this allows the spool to run more freely (harder to stop) if loosened or is more restricted (easier to control) if tightened
Title: Re: throwing with big throw baits or decent throw baits.
Post by: Homie on August 12, 2011, 09:49:19 AM
Hey Krissi,

on the multipliers you kave a cast control knob jut next to the star drag.

This controls the movement of the spool.
when this is tightened, the spool spins slower, so when casting big baits, it does not spin too fast and result in an overwind

OK - gotcha now -  :tkx:
Title: Re: throwing with big throw baits or decent throw baits.
Post by: REEFMAN on August 12, 2011, 10:02:17 AM
Just tighten the Cast Control knob. The inertia of launching a cast with a big bait causes the reel to spin very quickly initially, then, due to the wind resistance of the bait, it slows down quicker than normal.

Yea had that happen at my first trials - tried to throw a big mackie bait to impress n sliced my thumb open and had the biggest crows nest  :-(   Felt a total idiot!  Thank goodness the selectors saw past it. Throwing big baits as a woman is hard - really need to work on the casting technique and get it waxed first then slowly increase the bait size.  I tend to drop my rod too low on the follow through and flick the sinker when trying too hard for distance.  Practise, practise  w;k

Ok here's the Vid I got... notice how smooth the cast is... no forcing, otherwise you'll snap your rod. This cast is with an 8oz Bait and a 10oz sinker = 18oz in total.

makes a huge difference, as u casted it sounded like the rod cracked...lol
18oz.....  :shk  scary stuff when you work out your rod is only ment to handle 10oz only

Be sure to throw a slightly longer than normal drop with a big bait. We regularly throw yellow tail heads and whole frigates here in Cape Town. How far, I don't know....far enough I suppose! It needs to be a progressive loading of the rod. Short sharp hitting of the bait will end up with you in tears!

Currently I use a Purglas 400/7 for my big throw baits. Pentagon heavy will also work very nicely. I just put up a pic on another thread of the size baits we were throwing on Saturday. Those frigates were about 30-35cm long.

I am by no means an expert at throwing big baits but with Sliding now out of SASAA it is going to be important to present and throw a decent size and attractive bait!

...try not clipping the sinker. I find it flies better unclipped! Just get the sinker hanging inline with the bait. Also the bigger the bait the bigger the sinker.

Casting biiiig baits is an art form that was about to die out - mostly because of sliding.

But:
1 It does not help you to cast big baits with a light stick...
 Use a 7 + 1 / 8 + 1 - but my choise will be a Purglass stroke 6 / stroke 7 / stroke 8
2 A reel spool weight actuall makes a difference - the heavier a reel's spool the better it cast with a bigger bait. Thus I cas bigger baits with my Trinnie 30.
3 You have to change your swing - make it slower - thus you must use more power. No use trying the same action with a big bait as with a sinker alone.
4 The conveyor belt idea in the top post is an excellent Idea - I used to use an old cricket ball.
5 Then you must practise this. Even if you get tired - still practise but keep the swing correct. This will build mussle as well as mussle memory.
6 Buy cheap line so you are not afraid to throw a crow / break the line off.

cheers

whose this sylvester chap?...what did he do to my bra craig van der balls?.....

i hear it quiet often that big baits should be thrown unclipped. whats the reasoning behind it?. i need to start throwing bigger baits now. biggest i threw was whole makkies with 3 red eyes wrapped around it.

does an unclipped bait really go better?.....im sure clipping a bait and having both flying together should be better?

Still got the Balls Mrs Habib! HAHAHAHA!!!

with very big baits the sinker can pull on the edge of the bait and it can make the bait "helicopter", With the sinker hanging level with the bait they can travel together! It is a personal preference thing and neither way is right or wrong.

As always...... the best method is the one that makes you the most comfortable!

hahahaha thanks craig. as for my avatar and description below it.....all i will say is im waiting to see homie so i can whip that little dog for doing that to me. i assure u all .....that pic is not me.
ok so this bait story....ok i understand. just thought that the unclipped bait MAYBE threw the bait further.
looking at reefmans video....that was a huge bait and he took a chance with such a short drop....i was expecting that rod to break...but with that said...it looked like it landed close to 100m with that splash. tony did u measure that cast?.

Ja, I don't know about further but when you pull a decent shot with an unclipped bait flies better, less spinning, that a clipped bait. I normally use a 0.45 sinker line with a throw bait and am always concerend it will pop but it never does as the action on a big throw bait is quite a bit slower that with just a sinker. It is VERY important that the sinker and the bait hang level though!

Ya, we were lobbing them 85-100m.

when throwing big baits 1st make sure your reels brake blocks are in before you move to the "tension "knob,as this knob is meant to take up side to side play on the spool more than a cast control,2nd slow down your cast action, and come over the side rather than over head, this allows a more gentle arch in the rod thus reducing a chance of breakage, from the 2 o clock position you can speed the cast up to point of release at 11o clock. 3rd your sinker must lead your bait not the other way around ,meanin if your bait weighs 110g the sinker must weigh 150g this will stop the helicopter action and by clipping the bait it makes a huge difference as your sinker/bait combo is more in line reducing air friction= more distance. The Gp guys can join me for help ,I do alot of casting at Homestead dam with Yusaf from western accessories, pop in at waft boksburg fridays/sat to make arrangements with me and I will be glad to help you.I will bring some bonnies/makkies and we can cast the real thing...as the others have said practise practise practise
regards
Dennis
