Just giving you guys a heads up on a product I've started using recently. It's more suited to the guys who appreciate the finishing touches on their knots. It is a clear resin-like glue that is UV Activated to harden into a hard but flexible layer. It is used to smooth over knots and joins to move easier through your guides.
I bought it to use specifically on my braid to mono join on my heavy jigging setup and have since started using it on all my knots (PR knot, Slim Beauty, biminis, back-to-back uni's and figure of 8's).
A few tips for easier use:
1) You must apply it indoors as it sets almost immediately in direct sunlight (UV exposure)
2) It is fairly gel-like when it comes out of the tube, so it helps to spread a thin, even layer around the knot and rotate the knot by hand then take it into direct sunlight and rotate it for around 2min to set evenly
3) It will take some practice not to get a thick layer which makes the knot bulky. I try to only fill the "bumps" in the knot
4) It helps to extend the glue about 2mm on either side of the knot - it forms a tapered leading edge which is especially good for bulky knots like a bimini or back-to-back knots going through the guides
5) To cure the bigger knots properly leave the knot in direct sunlight for about 20min to cure all the way through so it doesn't crack
6) The stuff doesn't set properly in overcast or low light conditions (the only setback to the product)
7) It protects braid knots very well from wear and tear
8) With a bit of practice you'll have good looking hard wearing knots
9) It can be used to repair epoxy heads on flies, and can act as a filler to mend dinged or cracked lures
Here's what the product looks like and I think it retails between R70 and R80 a tube (I paid R74). Give it a bash and you'll find it very useful!

:shre: and where did you buy it
-
:shre: will try it out
-
I have seen it in a few tackle shops, I bought mine at Gremlins Tackle in Margate. Maybe some of the guys in GP have seen at Ganis or Mias?
-
Bwana have you tried using a small uv light on the knots? I know Bennie sourced some awhile ago
-
No I haven't, I've seen it advertised on the net but haven't seen them in stores. That would be ideal especially for on the boat for those cloudy days and early morning sessions
-
Have been using this stuff for a while now and it is good. Have a look at you tackle shops in the fly section. Those guys use it when making their flies. I allso got myself a small UV light with it the same size as the small lasers the kids play with.

This stuff is very popular in flyfishing. If you can't find it at your local tackle dealer, try a specialist flyfishing tackle shop. :corrct:

Ha ha, you're too quick for me Fritz!

Check your Hardwares stores for a Product called UV BOND, same product and a lot cheaper. I use it to finish my plaits and biminis :appr:

cool Greg will have a look for it. I am keen to use the stuff on our 80lb rigs to smooth over the plaits and Biminis to help them through the roller guides.
-
It works great for that, I like to finish whips on my wind-ons with it as well, nice and neat and very pliable...

This is a very interesting product. Being in the glass industry, we too use a uv glue to bond glass to metal with a break strength of +- 25 N/mm2 .
@ Bennie - not all uv lamps are the same. The UVA reading is what is NB. In the glass industry we use a UVA wave length of 315-400 to do our bonding.
I have a point for you all to think about...
If a glue is set with UVA, it will just as easily reverse itself if exposed to the sun. Well that is the case in the UV glue we use in the glass industry. Expose it to the sun and the bond WILL fail.
-
Expose it to the sun and the bond WILL fail.
Not good news...but I think UV knot sense does not work like that ????
-
Its not the same stuff we use, fly fisherman use the stuff on their flies and I have never had it melt down again.
-
Good to hear Fritz and Jaen!
Just thought I would put it out there.
