Title: Oosthuizen's - Vaal
Post by: WalkersKiller on July 27, 2011, 12:42:41 PM
Hi guys, does anyone have any info on this spot along the Vaal? Or has anyone been there recently? Heard at one stage it was quite dodgy but apparently the fishing there is good...

Fished there 2 years ago it wasn't great but also not terrible. To be honest we put a ton of effort in for 3 fish of like 2kg each. It was winter so maybe better in summer

Cool Rory what were they like? Planning to do some float fishing with Lunker in the area when it warms up, so looking for a venue with nice drop offs or a steep bank...

Float tubes or your boat? Flyfishing or conventional?

Oosthuizens has good reputation for smallies on dry during the winter, although with the state of the Vaal this winter season there has not been much dry fly action at all. You may get lucky though, tie small klinkies and para-adams and target actively feed/rising fish.

Float fishing off the bank for carp, yellows, muddies and barbel  :-)

If its the Oosthuizens I know then its one venue up from Yellowfish Paradise, back towards the barrage.

Yellowfish Paradise is a generally all round good spot. Rondawels and chalets to hire, caravan and camping spots with electricity day visitors welcome plus theres a general dealer store/bottle store. Lots of rapids to wade, and a nice section for the baities. I hope Herman Jooste picks up on this thread, he knows YFP like the back of his hand!

Baitfishing (or artlure ) YFP is very tricky if you are bank angling. The substrate is VERY rocky, with plenty of hidden big boulders. ( It's not the second hardest wading venue I know on the Vaal for nothing  :unhap . That's why I bought my ARK in the first place ).

If you are bank bound there is a nice pool directly below Bill's house that has offered up huge barbel and carp.  If it's packed  walk up from the Chalets, go over the fence and poach the old Vis Arend. Sit near the willows and cast no more than 10 meters from the bank, thats where the channel is.

Do NOT use a weight at all! If you want to use a bomb, form it around your swivel or leader knot, about the sizeof a golf ball.

If you have a flotation device then go up river, past the island to the first reef. Anchoe is still water and walk to the main channel flowing the fastest between 2 outcrops. Tie on a crab, with some split shot above and drift the bait down stream in the current, but make sure your tippet is at leat 12lb. You are afterall fishing for Yellows  :hehe:

Thanks for the creds guys.
Another venue for bait bank angling would be Erina Spa, just below the Barrage.
Beware though the word Spa, is a misnomer. It USED to be, but is now three quarters broken down, with NO ameneties whatsoever. :unhap  The place was sold to developers 3 years ago and they seem to have hit a pothole.

Below the islands the river is wide with few snag places and some really deep holes not far from the bank. Day rates are not that hefty,E 20 pppd AFAICR.
Some REALLY big fish came out here in Summer, and with the flows stabilised , the right day in winter should produce at least a few fish. :-)
