Great Demo Reefz !!!
:appr:

Great way of doing it. I know how many times I have casted a net and it did not open nicely. Your method will even work nicely form a boat as you shorten the lenght of the net by half . Certainly will I try it :shre: :tite

Have you tried this method of throwing the CastNet yet?
Has anybody tried it and seen how easy it is yet?
-
nw that is a top video. i have thrown a net once at tugela. was way more difficult as shown here. gonna get me a net tomorrow.
whats the furthest u can throw that thing?. would like to try it of the rocks in the skei. net might get buggered though?. would be nice to net some blacktail/karanteen or shad for live bait
-
The rope that it comes with is about 3 meters long, you can add on, but I'm not sure how far it will effective wrt to opening fully
-
trying it this evening tony will let you know how it goes... coz i SUCK at casting cast net!!

Big secret with these 6ft Cast nets... they all come with a rope that is way too short. So when you throw it, the rope length stops the net from opening properly.
I have lengthened the throw rope to about 10-12m, which is about as far as I can throw it... the ropes that many of the nets come with are way too short, which causes the net to pull back on itself when throwing, and it snags or doesn't open properly. Important to have a good length of rope...

reefman being in cape town wind is always a factor.... how does wind affect it and how can you combat wind when using the net?

Wind? Whassat? I'm allergic to wind.
-
well tonight for example we need to find livies in 40km/h NW in about 6m swells.... going to be fun!!!
-
It is the easiest way to throw a cast net! EVER!!!! :yipee:
-
:cgrts: :shre:
-
Reefz.......next week I'll try the method, when the swell is a little smaller here in Cape Town........I'll let you know, because I always battle with these nets :hehe: :hehe:
@Marhin moet nou nie dat ek jou vang op daai hout brug nie :hehe: :geet :geet .......ek het n lang lens w;k
-
Totally gobsmacked at how simple this technique is yet so effective. Cast netting has been my Achilles heel but now all that will change.... + cred Reefs.
-
Nee daas niks innie lagoon nie...
-
Suggestion: You guys must first practice the technique at home on the grass... much easier to learn it there than trying at the beach in the wind! Once you've got it taped at home, it becomes like old hat at the beach...
-
Great Demo Reefz!!
Looks easier and more effective than mine.
I only get a good spread half the time, so this one will be practised!!
:shre:
-
First time I used the net after Reefz showed me how to use it properly produced my first fish caught in a throw net :yipee:

hi UA
can someone please point me in the direction of were to get a propper cast net?.
was in dbn today and popped into a well known shop and he had 2 nets for sale.
the shop owner did an admirable thing by telling me that they not all that great and says i should look for a net called the super spreader.
says its 6 ft that opens to 12ft when thrown....or something like that. anyone know of this?.
took the lytie to the bay today and managed 8 mullet (transkei bait).... fishing drift bait. there were thousands like 3m from us. would have been a perfect practice launch
so this super spreader....anyone know of it?
-
Hi Habib - Know what u talking about. I know of a sport shop in KNYSNA if u dare postage cost etc. I do not know if they are the Super spreader u talking about , but do know they sell quality netts.
Have a chat to Peter BAILEY @ 044 3825604 wrt the best nets for shallow/deep water & prices. He will advice u.

Just make sure your fishing club has a valid castnet licence for the bay. No castnetting allowed, the only guys that could keep licenses for the bay where the fishing clubs, and many of them have let them lapse.
-
THANKS Ben. will give them a call. by the way, i do alot of work at melmoth. i have the mondi contract. would be nice to meet and say hi one day.

-
hi all
so i went and bought myself a cast net in 6ft (mono type). i still need to get the licence and stuff. btw...does the post office sell cast netting licence?.
took it to transkei (grovenor) last weekend....naughty i know without a licence but i just wanted to practice.
uses reefmans demo and i can tell u that i tried it for the first time and it worked like a sheeznit. thanks tony.
first throw in a little gulley....1xmullet. 2nd throw and the net almost got pulled out my hand....8xhuge stonebream. i released all the fish...i swear.
ok so now i wana know....were can i throw and not throw a net in kzn?
-
Hozit Habib? Yes, you can get the licence at the post office. Check your angling licence, there is tick box for a cast net.
-
Habib, I just confirmed that netting is allowed in the Umgeni estuary except a certain area on the North bank (signs posted). You can net on the South bank near the mouth and higher up on the North bank.
Basically any estuary that does not form part of a "reserve"
-
Ay thats so cool Habib! It worked for you! Fast learner eh?!
You're not allowed to throw in most reserves estuaries... eg Umfolozi at Mapelane. But you can throw anywhere in the sea.... not sure about harbours though? And not at night.

The main reason you can't throw a net at Mapelane/St. Lucia is you may catch more than you bargain for, you are allowed to throw them in the sea and in the mouth area.
-
Reefz is right and I forgot to mention - no netting in the harbour allowed.
-
thanks guys. much appreciated. wana get used to this and get me a 10/12ft soon. got some nice videos on how to throw it. similar to reefz way....but your mouth is used as well for the bigger nets.

Be careful using your mouth.... Might end up looking like a Gatiepie from Ape Town.....
-
i suggest you keep quiet and go look for my net at mias. also remind me to drop of headlight and your rod bucket at your inlaws....u know how i forget things?
