Completed 3.5m swimbait trace  with 2 x 10/0 big game hooks , on the other end of the swivel i still have the option of adding 3 to 4m  c/coated steel or just going  directly to my leader of 1.4 to 1.6mm (wind-on) , the double hook set up is attached to the small shark/ swimbait just behind the dorsal fin , through flap of skin and the other hook lies on the back of swimbait , or stands slightly proud.

hey mike

some wild hooks there bud.
do you think the flemish eye knot will hold?

these buggers do have some hard crunching jaws.
dont want the knot to fail.
a close up would do............

nice by the way

Thanks , hope the flemish  will hold , will also look at other methods of attaching cable to hook eyes as i make the other traces.

Mike

the reason for my question.
up at st lucia we use to have the kingie runs during september october.
i have seen where 9o kendals cut open split rings due to kingies smashing the spoons.
you tend to get a side cutter effect.

would a seperate knot to each not work better?
its gonna be bigger, but what the hell, it seems it's rated for in eds

Nice Mike!!  (clap)

Those Mustad Big Game hooks are beautiful hey!?  :hnthnt:

@ ss  - Absolutely no reason why the Flemish eye with Crimps wouldn't hold... it's a knot used throughout the Big Game fishing world with great success. The key is in crimping properly. Not so crucial in steel, but vital when crimping mono... it's a whole art on it's own!

Also, the split rings that come standard on most commercial spoons and lures are totally useless, and need to be replaced. This includes the proper Halco Poppers and most other brands. Ask yourself why the best quality lures are so expensive - it's because of the split rings, hooks and swivels being used....
Eg: the ball bearing swivel used in the above Swim trace costs anything from R15 - R40..... EACH!
A decent OWNER split ring is expensive!

Great post Mike! +cred!

Yeap... agree with Reefz... the flemish plus crimp is standard in big game fishing... not really sure why all the R7S guys have such reserves with this method?!

That flemish eye is super strong! With coated cable to my slide I do a flemish and finish it off with a few wrapps so with double crimped it is 100%.
Only thing that I would do differant is to do the flemish eye onto the swivle aswell but I don't think that it matters much...

@ reefs why do you use such expensive swivels 3/0 power swivels are super strong! Something like 316kgs if I remember correctly? And the are about R3.50 each also the guys in the SC have got some monsters on them that break everything from 440lb cable ( jump off and bite off) to 20/0 circles so if the swivel survives that then it will be enough for a swimbait???

The thimbles won't go through the eye of a power swivel. The equivalent size power swivel is actually stronger than a ball bearing swivel

but if you do the flemish eye you dont need thimbles and they do fit through the 3/0 just checked now...

Steve you must remember that us GP okes only get to fish 2 or 3 times a year, and because of that, we need to make sure that our tackle is as bullet-proof as possible. No time for errors and breakages. No time for tears and "if only's". So we try do it as bullet-proof as possible. I've seen plenty power swivels go pop when fishing for GT's... I get so little time to fish that I'm not prepared to take a risk on something I'm not 100% certain about? Dunno if that makes sense, and maybe our tackle setups are a bit overkill, but I prefer minimizing my chances of losing that one fish of a lifetime.

Steve the thimble is more to protect the cable where it goes through the swivel  and vice versa .

Gents, if you look ast a swim bait that has been crowed, were is the bite marks normally? And everybody suggest we pin the shark next to its dorsal fin? Hence we still use a one hook setup? No pun intended, but look at some pics of sharks that were chowed, and you will see that 95% of the time the tail gets chowed. This is to immobilise the shark completely. That is why my swimbait trace for sharks not rays has two hooks. A J hook to pin it at the dorsal fin and a big circle for the tail. Me thinks you will have a bigger hookup rate that way than with just one hook.

Nice looking trace! Very neat. I would go with 2 J-hooks as well but not bound back to back, rather one pinned just ahead of the dorsal fin and one between the dorsal and the tail.

Also why use S/S hooks? They are a menace if lost in the fishes mouth!!

Agreed i'm going to make some variations on the next trace and on the one already made (flattened barbs on the s/s hooks) and on the next trace a "J" hook for pinning the swimbait and a circle slightly further back on the trace but not in the swimbait , more like a skelm hook but snelled of course trailing behind the dorsal or it can be attached to the tail area. :-)
