Fighting Chairs have been around a long while and the 2 main techniques used are the straight leg or the bent leg technique.
Stand up fishing is becoming very popular but does require physical strength and some weight.
Battle stations seem to be a nice mix between the 2 and also uses your body weight like the straight leg technique in a chair.
What are your thoughts.

No problem there for you hey Mikey?? :hyst:
I would rather have a chair. It seems a little half job! Get a chair or use a harness... My opinion!
Look, this is how you do it Mike! :hehe:

I made a mock up to try and can tell you that it is extremely effective, that little girl in that pic will never hold 8kg of drag, let alone 12Kg and 80lb on full at 17Kg will see her swimming.
After a long 3hr fight with 17Kg of drag I struggled, especially with my high trolling bars and when the fish went to the motors I nearly was on the gunnels and struggling to hold on.
I need a SAFER and easier solution for my clients.

Mike, tour only option is a chair. There is no other way off fighting a 300lb + fish...and a 500lb + blue will demand you using a chair.
This point is only stronger if you think about client that might lack the correct stand-up techniques and it's 100% safe
I need a SAFER and easier solution for my clients.
chair is your only option. a big fish will demolish you on standup
-
Stand up fishing is awesome and you can beat huge fish with the correct gear, I love it!! But in order to do it effectively you need BIG space and stability, which unfortunatley is the realm of the sportsfishers!! Although we have effectively fought big fish in the black magics of our Ski boat but we are experienced anglers.
Which is why we chose to have a chair on the boat for our clients, so even the novice angler can pull a big fish with only a couple of minutes of instruction, its the only safe means with inexperience.
-
Thanks Guys,
Does anyone have design ideas to make a chair??
-
Me , that girl, a chair & a half job .........um...what ...?
Battle station looks like it could get a little awkward.
If I needed to make the decision, I'd say chair as well.
-
The newer smaller fighting chairs (z'craft) would be perfect. I don't see a battle station being too comfortable in rough weather. A fighting chair will also give the extra edge looks wise to customers. Perception goes a long way. I just saw one of these at Inhaca on a new 2406, I'll dig in the pictures later tonight and see if I took any pics.
I'd recommend getting something simple, no need for all the extra stuff people have in their chairs nowadays and have them weigh 200kgs.
But most definitely get the fighting chair. If anything and above all, it would great enhance customer's experience. They can always enjoy it and feel the *big fish* while one reels it in and the other plays a part turning the chair and you chase it down. Even taxman fishing, they love the whole scene.
As a suggestion on the back rest, no need for the whole back support, a nice rocket launcher with 2 or 3 rod holders and 2 drink cups would be awesome. Of course cushions at the front and where you seat down. Ain't nothing worse then sliding on a wet fighting chair or having your butt uncomfy. Make it count.
Pretty sure you have enough space for it on the f200, i've seen a few with them.
:geet
-
Was thinking... None of the guys in C.T. seem to use fighting chars at all. They all seem to use harnesses and I know for a fact guys like Miles will catch more than one 80kg + fish in a day!
-
I would say Char. reason being is most of your crew are charters who have never been to sea before, or if they have, only a hand full of times.
A 20ft bvoat still rock n rolls a lot and keeping a "green" (often in more ways than one) on their feet can be a challenge, even when fighing small fish. a chaair lets them sit safely in comfort.
Bennie, I agree re stand up, BUT miles has more sea hrs to his anme than most SA Navy Seamen, so he is a different beast when it comes to stand up.
The chair needs to be small enough to be turned out of the way when necessary but adequate to take the bok front row when needed, and must be easily removed.
-
Something like this
The boat is an F200 as well
-
Yes, looks good, the only problem is I would have to make a mould for the glass seat and need a simpler idea for that.
-
We would prefer it if you didn't steal our mould :hehe:
-
put this on....
-
Or maybe this??

I like that second one Greg, are they expensive?? :hyst: :hyst:

I dont think you can really put a price on safety and comfort for your charter clients...... :crzy

i can do you one of these at R199 and we use hot plastic injection moulding and 4 self tappers to screw to deck
-
red cushion not included

Why use self tappers, small rivets are better? :shk
-
red cushion not included
Now you've ruined it. :unhap
-
Is it extra if I want stainless self tappers???
-
was trying to keep it classy with the screws but if you want rivits R198

on the more serious side of things a poorly made chair can be very dangerous if the pedistool brakes and chair falls over you still clipped to the rod you could be in the poo

Speak to Rory!
-
What he said!!
Rory's your guy!
-
To make the picture clearer, I have most the materials and want to make it myself, I cannot afford R8000.00 for a chair.
-
hmmm not sure if Rory is going to be overly keen to assist here seeing that it is his business?
But what about something like this in conjuction with the kidney strap of a Black magic, or shoulder harness? As I understand it you are only 50w tackle so they dont share the weight of the 80w's? And as most of your rods cater for stand-up and are shorter you can get the angler up quickly and moved should the line be near the props etcs as you dont have the clearance of the longer chair rods?

or even a couple of chair gimbals bolted to your coffin hatch??
-
Shag, i had thought along the same lines, and could not remember where I had seen them. Clip those under the hatch seat whereever you want the people and you have a char of sorts.
-
what shag said re-inforce back of coffin hatch and fit a gimbal braket onto that and use the hatch as the chair.

Thanks shag!!!!
Gave me an idea... Will adapt one to use my 85 L safari as a chair.... with my DIY shoulder harness I can challenge the noisy beasts!!!!
-

No, I think the battle station is better.
The battle station image is deceiving as to how it works, I made a test and actually it is very effective and can turn to fight the fish, the brace is thigh high and work very similar to stand up where you have a brace around your buttocks and then lean your weight into it.
But I want a chair, I do think this is the best solution.
Now to make one.....
-
Actually, I will make a battle station also as I have enough stuff here to do that.
-
Do you have a fixed coffin hatch or removable one
-
Do you have a fixed coffin hatch or removable one
Fixed.
-
going to be tricky then to find space to mount the stand.
the F200 fuel hatch especially opens on the sides so you can check/change your fuel while fighting a fish on the chair.
-
Here is a pic of where the chair mounting is that Z-craft fitted, the bracket and everything is there, just need a chair to drop in.
-
I would save money... and once I have spare cash, buy a chair!

I wanna build one, if it does not work, then at least I tried.
-
let me do a photo tutorial of how they made and if you still want to make one i will do what i can to help.

Nice stuff Rory!! :shre:

Mike, Why do you want to specifically have a moulded glass chair. A decent teak seat nicely sealed (splinters in the crack whilst hooked up could be over rated) is how they were made for years, and can look classy. Pretty easy to make out of wood as well, no fancy glass work, gel coats etc.

I am not set on a glass seat, the main thing is the mechanics of the frame that I need to find out.

Essentially they are pretty basic, really. The Back rest are purely for show and for those long trolling hours should someone want to sit in the chair, it must be able to swivel 360 and lock into position for travelling and must have an adjustable footrest that locks into position hard, thats it basically.

Yes, but what about the correct angles etc.
-
the only things ajustable on my chair is the gimbal the lenght of the footrest and the angle of the foot rest
-
quick how too
make plug
-
from this you make your mould.
then you make your componenet
-
then my special plate for the attacments
-
fit the plate
-
make sandwich
-
water jet weld and polish components
-
assemble
-
now you have chair
-
Wow Rory, so simple! :hehe:
-
gimbal and rod holder that we have cast
-
gimbal
-
couple more
-
Very nice, thanks. I see you have some serious toys that you use to make the parts. I can see that you have put a huge amount of effort into this design.
:shre:
-
(clap) Great stuff
-
now you have chair
easy peasy!! :hehe:

If you can find one for 8k, take it! I don't think you could build one for that!
