I dont know if this is the right place to put it, so Reefs please move it if it is misplaced.
A couple of weeks ago I was down at Cannon Rocks, didnt do much fishing with the big sticks, but threw twice or so. My SL's clutch was very very stiff, and it was making all kinds of sounds, and the handle was sticking a bit.
Anyway brought it home with the intention of sending it for a service. I left it on my book case. I picked it up yesterday while day dreaming about fishing...whats new :tite ha ha.
So I started playing around with it, the reel that is. ha ha. I couldnt even turn the handle. The reel was completely siezed up.
So I thought stuff it, let me service it myself. So I went to buy the necessary things. Benzine, Grease, 3 in 1 oil and WD40.
I opened it up and set to work, using Reefmans turorial. After almost two days of cursing, and trying to get the clutch spring thingy to stay in place I HAVE FINALLY DONE IT. It is as smooth as the day I bought it.
A big thanks to Reefman for the turorial. This place is definately an Ultimate resource for angling :uarocks :uarocks :uarocks :uarocks :appr:

Awesome AD! Love it when a plan comes together! Thats what those tuts are put there for... so you can learn how to do them yourself. I'll bet you'll be lot less intimidated and more confident next time you open a reel up?!
Well done bru!

Servicing your own reel, now you are a real MAN
I remember how excited I was when I serviced my penn 500 by myself - Almost as excited as when I caught my first big fish.

Thanks for the encouragement guys. Hopefully that SL30 will land me something nice in Gordons Bay next weekend :appr:

Engineers know that if you assembled a devise and it works to acceptable standards, that you will sometimes have parts that you did not use.

"I opened it up and set to work, using Reefmans turorial."
Well done AD97 - I think it's time for me to do the same but would like to 1stly consult with Reefmans Tutorial. Being new around here, I don't seem to find this though - are you able to post a link to this tutorial?

Alternatively use the search function ... it works pretty well!

It all sounds pretty daunting, but I think with in-depth tutorials like this, even for me it could be ok - thanks John and yeh, a special thanks to Reefman for availing this material!

Hey Mike... :welc:
It's not as intimidating as it looks!
What I found quite useful when I first started servicing my own reels, (many years ago!) was to use an eggbox/tray. As a piece comes off the reel, you pop it into one of the eggcups... which have been marked in sequence... just makes things easier. Nowdays there are many different types of Tupperware/plastic trays with cups in them... Ice trays work well... just use your imagination.

@Reefman - thanks for encouragement. Intimidating, well when I get to the re-assembly part and I've got plenty left :dunno: I'll most likely have to courier the parcel to you. Wanna just congratulate you guys on a stunning site - you won't know how I've missed all the valuable tutorials, traces, knots reels ....... endless!
Thanks for a great site and I know UA will grow from strength to strength - :uarocks

Funny how an idea so simple can frustrate a person. Losing bits and pieces has always been my biggest fear but that is a simple yet such a fantastic tip.
Thanks Reefs
