Title: Fishing Tales from MPT Bay aboard "Micaela": 19 Feb 2011
Post by: John F on February 20, 2011, 05:02:56 PM
We (myself and my kid brother) launched just in time for the 05:30 h whistle for Clube Maritimo's 2nd leg of their Ford/Interauto championship.

I decided to troll with both at all times just to experiment my fuel consumption.

Water temp was 27.7o C early in the morning and progressed to just above 28o C during the day.

After some "peeing" problems with my starboard motor which were quickly solved with a rigging needle, and a bit of rain we were good to go.

Some large (3 m) swells were encountered on our way to the grounds, which delayed our fishing and made us waste a bit more fuel.

Our plan was to go to an area called B1 (19-24 m), which produces couta and other game fish. This being a species comp, sounded like a good plan, which would be followed by chasing billfish in the deep.

By 09:00 am we had 3 couta on sards which would gives us points, so we decided that it was time to go deep.

It turn out to be a very slow day. Clean water was found in the 55-60 m contour and we tried all the tricks on the book. Not a single strike apart from a small YFT which fell for my wine cork halfbeak+bird (http://www.ultimateangling.co.za/index.php/topic,3314.msg39632.html#msg39632 (http://www.ultimateangling.co.za/index.php/topic,3314.msg39632.html#msg39632) - which made me quite happy!).

I decided to call it a day at 15:30 h and made our way straight to club.

At the end, I used 1.4 L/nm compared to my "normal" consumption of 1.25 L/nm!

Sorry about the poor quality of the pics.

Lessons learned:

1. Get a good night's sleep before you go fishing!
2. It seems like I use more fuel trolling with two motors!
3. Bennie's Slant 42 and Cona 40 swim and smoke 100%!

Hi John
Nice catches. Welldone with your cork lure. I am longing to get to Inhaca. How is the fishing in wintertime at Inhaca?

Great Stuff JohnF. So sweet with your own lure mate. Pity your new tackle did not get any billies!

Thanks guys...

@Tunaman: the new tackle was loaded with the Demon Slant 42 - "hot stuff"! I'm sure it will get me that bill soon...

@Big Van: Inhaca in the winter is great... large couta on drifts and sailies... and of course flat seas!
