Title: Mapelane - 12th-19th March
Post by: REEFMAN on January 25, 2011, 01:00:58 PM
A few of us are doing a serious fishing trip to Mapelane in March (12-19). Spring tides and the moon waxing...  :hnthnt: A few days of North East wind and we should be good to go!

If anyone else wants to join us, feel free to pull in. Unfortunately, we got the last Log cabin - the rest are fully booked, so if you do want to come, you will need to arrange your own Accomodation at the Camp sites. Biggest problem with camping at Mapelane is that there is no electricity, but freezers are "available for hire", which need to be pre-booked with the Camp.

Would love to but, we are still teaching on those dates, and we are booked for April!
So will be needing a decent report on the fishing and the roads, if you would be so kind

Some of the log cabins are old, but they started renovating about a year ago. We are lucky enough to have booked one of the "refurbished" log cabins...  :dunno: At this stage, don't really care, as long as I have a roof over my head and a hot shower...

Reefs;

you need to make the voerplek good.

i'll be on the other side, of the umfolozi river from the 18th to 21st.

heard on sunday, that the river has been in flood for the past 3 weeks.
but when the north east blows, the water clears up at the mouth.
shad still there, quite big.

I am keen, and although i like camping, i would also prefer a proper roof over my head

What is the next closest accomodation to the spot where you will be fishing

Is there anyone still wanting to fish Mtunzini around those dates or is the majority fishing Mapelane ?

Is there a list of people going ?

It seems it's Mike Pike, Skrops, Kumz and myself so far, with PH joining camping sometime during the week. Nearest accomodation would be St Lucia, but it's a long drive between St Lucia and Mapelane.... Mapelane is in the sticks!

Sounds like it will be a bit tough to accomodate more guys then unless they keen to camp, and camping without electricity is also a no no
sounds like we would really be roughing it

It's probaly more than that considering the 50 km dirt road to the site. (Is it 50km?)

Please don't say there will be plenty of water  :shk
March is still a long way off

To get to St Lucia from Mapelane, you have to drive all the way round the Umfolozi... (no bridges), which means probably going all the way back to Mtubatuba (N2) and then to St Lucia. Round trip must be 85-100kms??

soos die kraai vlieg is st lucia 3km vanaf maphelane.

You can always choose to swim through the umfolozi river.
Some zambies are always around.

And, the umfolozi is already halfway to st lucia........

Guys, in the event that I don't launch with the kayak, I have the following for R&S fishing:

Elbe 11 ft Estaury Pro (20 - 40g) with a Simano Slade reel. Would that suffice for eds fishing
or should I upgrade?
Thanks.

Should be sufficient, but if you want to wet your line in the surf you will need to cast a heavier weight

Thanks, after your posting I calculated 40g = 1.4 oz which is very light for surf.
I may have to go heavier as you say.

Much appreciated REEFMAN.
It's obvious that I'm not that familiar with R&S but that will give me the opportunity to test drive (and obtain advice) before I possibly buy something that's not really suitable for me.
I'll used the Estuary Pro stick for spinning for Wave Garrick if the water is clear enough.

Some feedback on Mapelane
We arrived on 1 March for some crayfishing only to find out that there are no more beach permits available.
We could not drive down the beach to our usual spots at savini ledges.
Went down to crayfish corner this morning on low tide - swell was a bit up and we could not raise a cray on the traps,
Fished the high tide this afternoon - nothing but some wave garrick.
Slid one out for 2 hrs - no pick ups. Northerly wind was pumping though.
No evidence of shad or other edibles or sharks so far
Might move on to St Lucia tomorrow for some deap sea fishing as prospects for rock and surf fishing not so good at Mapelane for the next few days
Will keep you posted

this does not make sense, as the turtle nests are way up the beach, where you are not even allowed to drive.

this giving and taking of the lolly pop is p ............ motivated.

Hey Guys

Just a quick one for those off to Mapelane this weekend......I have just fished ther for the past four days three decent fishing sessions, we only fished far north in the bay in a huge whole with big baits looking for the big bite..........

Just got back so only a quick one as im off again,

The fish only ate in the morning, only one lost Blackfin at night on a slide and a few swim baits mashed......

I got 6 fish, one female Raggie approx 240kgs - 235cm, 3 x Sandies - 50, 40, 15; and a few rats and mice........

Wasnt the best, only had four hours to fish each morning because of the S to N pull in the water and it was very difficult to get the right tide, with the right time of day, and make sure you have a bait in the right place BUT when I got that right, YA had a few pulls,............

NO fireworks sorry to say.......but fish hard and you will find a few.......

Word of advise, fish Cray fish when tide is right (dont be scared to slide if you want a Sandy/honey) and fish for the big fish (sharks) in the hole north in the bay in the early mornings late afternoons,,,,Couple of bigger spinners around for those who swim fish....

Good Luck.....

If you need anything let me know

240kg Raggie!!!! Goeie donder! That's a flippin great fish! You got a pic? Love to see it!
Thanks for the report Wes. We've got high tide at Midnight, so we'll be fishing very late every night!!  :sadd
I know the other High tide at midday is like a graveyard so we'll maybe do Crayfish then...
Early morning, late evening is dead low tide... so that sucks a bit... Maybe do the South ledges then?

3 more sleeps....  :ayb
