Post by: Andre Laas on December 15, 2010, 10:31:36 AM
This area is dedicated to the discussion of Components used in rod building (actually more rod assembly)

Those in the know, please share information on

Line guides - what to use, where to get them, what sizes etc
Reel seats - Where can we get them, and which is best
Grips - What to use for what application... EVA, Shrink grip etc
Handles, Gimbals, Decals, Epoxies, Inlays, Ferrules, Hook keepers, Tapes, Winding checks etc

Discuss it all here

www.merricktackle.com (http://www.merricktackle.com)

I have just ordered from Mudhole (my second time) and no problems, prices are good and shipping cheap! I prefer it as they have good stuff which I cannot find locally like the Alconite guides.

Out of interest, I just received some goodies from Muhole. The service was incredible. Delivery was sharp and the cheapest I've ever paid for postage from anywhere internationally. They even sent me the tip top as a back order no cost to me!!!

On another note, I came up with a good idea to refurb your rod grips. Instead of buying the rubber shrink tube @ US$10.25 per foot (305mm). I'm going to try HD Electrical heat shrink. Comes in 38mm OD and costs R66 per meter (1000mm). Available in Red, Blue, Black, white and yellow. I've ordered some which will be with me tomorrow. Will give some feedback tomorrow night.

Should work a charm!

They look pretty awesome!!

I also in the process of doing a refurb of one of my old rods.  A Blue Marlin G3.  Gonna clean it down and keep the blank bare, new guides, new grip, new butt section, trigger winch etc, etc.

Built myself a rod turner from a microwave motor for the drying of the epoxy.  For binding I made wood blocks with a V cut in with little roller wheels covered with felt.  I prefer to turn my rod by hand when binding the eyes.

Going for a 22mm Fuji Trigger whinch, x-flock shrink grip and Fuji BNOG guides (Black Stainless Steel).

Hopefully it turns out GOOD!!

I think it looks good.
This is a KF Poseidon jigging rod. It has a blue grip full of doggy teeth marks. Now looks snazy in red!

Actually very tough and good grip!
