Once you get past 1mm leaders, it becomes increasingly difficult to tie a decent knot onto a Stopper Ring.
Bending a large diameter nylon is not ideal.
-
Enter the Thimble - this is used in nylon from 1.2mm upwards. It makes tieing knots in large leaders much easier.
-
What I have found with thimbles is that they tend to end up cutting my hands in some way or the other. I must confess I used the Stainless steel ones before, but now I have switched to plastic tubes. They work for me.
The plastic one in the pic does seem as if the edges are rounded, so should be safe
-
Ya I agree with you the metal ones are flippin dangerous. I rather avoid them. Those ones in the pic above are rubbery plastic and are fluorescent too... glow in the dark...
-
Reefs do you use that for shore angling? I think the glow in the dark might be a problem offshore, with wahoo and couta going for the swivel and biting off expensive konas. But I suppose you get a NON glow variant
-
Yup, I use them to tie on leaders to Stopper Ring when sliding...
-
always wanted to try that at Mtunzini, but I just do not have the know how of beach angling for big fish. I just mess around with the smaller stuff. Have all the equipment though :-)
-
:ayb idea Reefz , does the local tackle shops stock them here in Joburg, Mias .. etc...??

Ya - best place to try is MIAS (Woodmead or Montecasino)

Hahaaa... Vidal is calling... soon.... JS

the main reason use a thimble is to protect my leader knot onto my stopper ring from being cut by the pressure of the slide when playing or leadering a big fish
These r the ones use
-
Yup, those are the one's! Centro make quality stuff... thimbles, swivels, split rings - all good.

:corrct: I agree. I was using them on my jigs but stopped because I was worried about them being attractive to fish in the depths. I now use tubing. But if someone produced glow-in-the-dark assist cord w;k
-
You get Boone Tubing for Offshore use , its a long thin Spring thats dipped in plastic to cover the spring , comes in 10cm long and froom 1.2 mm to 2 mm . Can also be used for your stopper ring , although these spring type sleeves are more for a loop knot , that compesses the 'spring' in the tube .
Thimbles are very handy indeed , I stay well clear of the Metal ones ...
If theres a few guys that want a couple I can buy in bulk at a Commercial shop.

I do believe that those are pretty much what Reefs is referring to. Not sure that there is too much difference from manufacturer to manufacturer. Basic principle is to protect your leader from chaffing and fatigue (from bending too sharply) on terminal tackle.

thanks they very cheap R21 for a pack of 50

Too too nice. Thanks

Cheers ... sommer going to use these on my popping and spinning set up also. I have the tubes also but have never tried them ...

just a quick question, if you use the extra steelwire when sliding the thimble does not fit in the swivel, can i attach a split ring to the swivel, then the thimble through the split ring?
-
I personally do not use steel to my stopper as its just another weak link , also tie my leader with thimble onto stopper ring not to swivel , a slide could break that little swivel . its where the most pressure is
-
I am not to sure about a Swivel there too . I do an albright my Steel to leader and Fig 8 around a Thimble or Tubing .
If you do use a Spiltring , use a proper one .
-
aggree I use those jigging split rings cost about R2 each or less never had a problem
The only time I would use a full metal jacket is when the small rags r biting but then I dont really target them
Trying tennisraquet string as windons for the big blacktips had 1.4mm leader jumped off and 200pd steel snapped already with them , eish learning the hard way

Ismael, you should attach the swivel on the stopper ring to the sinker. Attach the steel/mono directly to the Stopper ring. If you're using steel, you don't need a Thimble.
If you're talking about the swivel that goes to the leader, rather don't use it - attach the leader to the steel with a Double Fig 8.
My 2c.

thanks guys
-
Interesting, I have always attached my leader to the swivel, thinking the slide sitting on top of the swivel is better than the leader tied directly to the ring. I only use power swivels. I'm trying to think if i've ever noticed the leader being tied directly to the ring when fishing with my mates / club and I don't think I have.
-
A swivel is just another weak link in the line, so rather risk losing your sinker than your slide/fish. I always attach my steel straight to the Stopper Ring.
It doesn't make sense to tie the business end to a swivel.
-
I always tie my steel to the swivel :hehe: I've never heard of anyone busting a swivel off so I'll carry on doing it.
Whatever works for you

You're kidding me?! :shk There are many stories. Here's even a pic from UA.
Swivels breaking was the whole reason why we firstly moved over to Power Swivels only and 2ndly, why we changed from 'steel-to-swivel', to 'steel-to-Stopper Ring'.
"Whatever works for you" - Ok then. Hope you don't have to learn the hard way.

Reefz I haven't heard of one popping on the stopper ring?
My reasoning is that you still have a power swivel on the slide which would have the same strength as that on the stopper ring? If a swivel is going to let go its probably the swivel on the slide and from the few people who have tried removing that swivel it doesn't seem to work very well as your bait tangles
-
I have, since being taught on the slide method, tied steel direct to stopper ring and swivel used for sinker line. Same method used by majority of KZN anglers.
