1. What is the strongest Mono - Mono Connection ?
2. What is the strongest Thick Mono to Thin Mono Connection?
When pushing the limits, what connection gives the closest to 100% breaking Strain.
Double Uni Knot - No, it does not make the grade
Double Figure of 8 - No, it does not make the grade
Uni/Figure 8 combo - No, it does not make the grade
Double Bimini with modified cats pawl - Possibly
Bimini on thin line with spider hitch on thick line loops joined with modified cats pawl - Possibly
Please let me hear what you have to say.

double blood ? work for me

Hi Mike
To join thin mono to thick mono, do a bimini in the thin mono, then fig 8 the double line onto the thick mono and do a fig 8 in the thick mono, wet and slide together. If properly tied the knot has 100 percent breaking strength and the thin line will part somewhere on the main line. No breakage in the knot.
To join two pieces of same thickness mono the back to back three turn fig 8 is the strongest that i know of, when tied properly.

Bimini on thin line to produce a "double line" then a double figure 8 has worked for me. No problems!

Thanks guys, the light tackle I fish really puts these knots through their Paces and I am looking for new ideas.
So far the strongest I have found for thick to thin is Bimini in the thin, Spyder hitch loop in the thick with a smaller loop and then joined with a 6 turn improved Cats Pawl.
Craig/Bennie your knot is cool, but very difficult to keep the double strands 100% equal with the fig 8 knot which becomes a problem for fly casting.
I would like to try a twisted leader and join that to the thick using your knot and then I have the loop to join to the fly line. What you think

I'm not fond of the twisted leaders. When necessary like on my spinning, jigging or plugging gear, I'd rather go with a wind on leader.
The trick is before you pull the knot tight, hold the thin single line with one hand and put your other hand in the loop and pull initially so it can give either side till even. Also I keep the double line short, just long enough so I could get a second knot out of it in case I need to change the leader on the boat. Saves doing another bimini on the boat. But I keep it short, 200-300mm is enough to get a second knot out of it.
If you want to change the leader, cut the leader by the knot keeping the main knot with the double line. Tie the new leader then trim it off.

These are the problems I need to overcome on the fly leaders
1. I am limited in length 2-2.5m
2. I need a loop at the fly line end where I use a Bimini
3. I need to absorb shock as my guests panic and lock up when the fish strikes, and a fly reel works more like a scarbourgh with direct contact to the line but it does have a drag
4. I need the thick line on the fly end for abrasion
5. The leader brraking strain must be less than the fly line or a breakoff can be expensive.
5. I cannot use heavy 200-300lb line, it will interfere with the light flies so in 2-2.5 m I need 2 doubled lines with loops and a heavy short shock leader max. 100lb
Currently I use 30-50lb with 2 biminis and then on the thick line I tie a syder hitch loop.
1 Bimini is joined to the fly line loop with a modified cats pawl, the other Bimini is joined to the syder hitch loop with a modified cats pawl. So far this has proved the strongest

Sorry can't help you with the fly stuff. You know me, 50Lb is considered light tackle for me..

Thanks, just on the light stuff everything is critical and I am always searching for new ideas and better ways

Mike, the way the R/S guys do it is as Craig and Bennie describe... Bimini main line with Double fig 8 joining to the leader... this connection has stood the test of time with some massive sharks being landed, as well as for edibles on lighter tackle. If it didn't work, the National, Provincial and club anglers would have come up with something different by now! Point is... it works, and is a tried and tested combination. The issue about keeping the doubled line from the Bimini the same length has never been a problem for us if you keep the doubled line about 10cm long max? 2c.

If you have time on your hands, do a plat on the thin line and join with figure 8. Otherwise bimini on thin line and join with figure 8. Or make a windon with leader and join with cats paw.
This has always worked for me.

If none of the above suffices then go for what the jigging guys use. A PR knot. Leader direct to fly line maybe that will work as they swear by it.

Please change you avatar, those dots move and make me squint and even after I go somewhere else they still worry me. :hehe:

Thats the plan. :hyst:
