Title: What Size Hook For Live Bait?
Post by: WalkersKiller on November 03, 2010, 10:07:53 PM
Hi guys, going fishing in the Eastern Cape in exactly one month... Cant wait! :sml:

I just would like to know if anyone can help me!

I will be fishing in the Bushmans River from the bank in a spot that holds Leervis, Kob and Shad with mullet, strepie or pinky (They will be between 15 and 25cm)...

Q1) Will I be able to target all these species with one bait and hook size?

Q2) What size and type of hook should I use to preferably target all 3 species? Eg. 5/0 circle hook

Q3) Where should I rig the live bait? Through the mouth and to the back or just straight in the back or mouth?

 :tkx:

Hi there WalkersKiller in my poinion you'd need atleast 3 types of bait sardine and choka for cob and shad and then a loaf of white bread for mullet.You will need 3 types of traces;
Shad 10cm no5 steel wire infront of an 5o hook with or without a float.
Cob 50cm 50lb mono or fluoro carbon with an 5o to an 9o hook with a three way swiwel and a 35cm sinker line
Mullet any small hooks not bigger than 3o just let it float around in the current without a sinker.
Tight lines!
Stokies!!!

You can rig the livebait thru the nose channel and at the back with two 5o to 8o hooks

Ja they would be 100sss you should try the VMC hooks they are my best choice of hooks and for me they improve your hook up rate but they are a little bit more expensive
