Title: Boat Rebuild
Post by: fishy1969 on May 07, 2019, 06:46:37 AM
Hi guys,

Been a while since I posted for various reasons...none fishing related! Over the years I have owned boats and eventually got rid of my last one about 4 years ago....I regret that decision most weekends! I have decided to sort myself out with another boat but this time in the form of a project. The thinking is that I will construct something to my spec that I know for sure is in excellent condition in all the unseen areas. So I bought the project boat. Not sure what make the hull is...would appreciate it if someone could enlighten me.

We started with the deconstruction process. Ripped all the wood and carpet out of the boat.

Next phase was to lose the cabin. Messy work but a man must do what a man must do!

I knew that the deck and stringers were not in good shape so that was the next phase. She had a poor system which allowed water back into the hull if she was parked incorrectly. Not a great idea! She was filled with plastic bottles that were in poor shape too!

The next stage was to clean the hull out completely in preparation for the rebuild. Agin messy work but completely necessary.

I am at the stage now where I am considering all reconstruction options in terms of materials and suppliers. I do not have an open Cheque book and budget is a concern for me....but I will not compromise quality. I will rather take longer to do the rebuild and make it affordable in that way. I am Durban based. Any direction from members in this regard will be greatly appreciated.

The next plan is to reglass the inside of the hull. Once complete will then do the stringers.

Sheezzzz.... that's quite an undertaking. Hope it all goes well. Post here if you need any input. There's a few very knowledgeable souls on UA.

I may be wrong but I think it's a "Sportsman" hull. Not sure who built them.

Thanks for the reply. I am looking for info regarding best places to buy fiberglass, resins, epoxies and marine ply if possible.

AMT Composites is a really excellent supplier of all sorts of goodies... I'm sure you could get normal polyester resin and glass cheaper elsewhere but AMT has a myriad of very cunning stuff. I always trash my personal budget when I go there. There's one in Durbs. https://www.amtcomposites.co.za/ (https://www.amtcomposites.co.za/)

Try NCS resins.

Looking forward to your progress! I love it when something old is rebuilt/redone

May I ask why you specifically chose that type of hull/style of boat?

Good luck with the build!

I was looking for a boat to fish the Bay with. I hate cramped boat decks. This will be nice and wide with lots of open deck space.

I would recommend NCS resins for fibreglass and associated products. For the marine ply you can try Buco in pinetown. They reasonable on the timber products.Good part is that both these companies are close by.

On my current rebuild i used the PU foam from Amt.its a good product and i tested it.

Hope this helps.

Shu how far are you with your rebuild? Would love to come and see what you have done if possible. I’m a complete novice and am looking to learn wherever I can.

To Be warned as i have done this for many people and myself, and allways tell them upfront, the boat is never going to worth anything near to what you spend on the rebuild.

I've long since learned that the work I put into my boats will never be rewarded other than through sheer personal satisfaction and that lekker fuzzy feeling when you're sitting on your work of art on a stretch of water, dreaming about the next boat  :rotfl

The intention is not to sell it but to hand it to my sons in a good condition when they are old enough!

Hi .

See pictures attached of the build progress.Took a old butt cat and transformed it into what i wanted.still not complete but i am almost there.should be ready in about 3 weeks time.with regards to the PU foam, i did a few tests which was very helpfull in making my decision.I used 3 x 500ml plastic containers in which i ran the tests.

1- I poured the PU foam into the container without any lid and allowed it to rise.I poured extra to let it rise above the top of the container. After setting. the extra foam at the top was cut flush to the container and then soaked in water.

2- I measured the exact quantity and poured the PU foam into the container with the lid on,making a hole at the top to allow it to rise. After it cured, it was removed from the container and placed in water.

3- The last test i did not measure exact quantity but did the PU foam pour in 2 parts but with the lid on.After it was cured, i removed it from the container and soaked it in water.

Results:

1- this method proved to be the worst.Once cut, the foam absorbed water about 1 cm into the foam which is bad considering this was a small piece.
2-this proved to be the best method as when i cut the foam open it was abosolutely dry inside.in my belief, the film that is formed around the foam helps prevent water penetration.
3-this method is effective but has some draw backs.because no c utting was done on this piece, it did not absorb any water but i did find that there where gaps between the container and the foam. These gaps when looking at it in the perspective of a hull is not ideal.the gaps will allow water to sit there should water penetrate through the deck/hull.

All in all the 2nd option was the best and i opted to go that route although calculating the quantities required was quite a challenge. In a nutshell, we did all the the bulkheads and stringers, then proceeded to install the deck.after the deck was installed, we cut holes on the deck to each chamber.the foam was then poured in and allowed to rise.We did have to cut a little foam where it pushed up past the hole but this is a small area so im not concerned.

I hope this helps.I will do a full report on the build soon but i am hectic with work and nned some time to compile.Never the less i have attached the pictures.

Just tricky to get engine height right
Title: Re: Boat Rebuild
Post by: shu vawda on May 20, 2019, 02:23:28 PM
You are quite right.Initially it was a challenge to get the dead rise and the height of the motors right. The boxes where bigger before but before installing i set them on the boat and called Natal power boats out to check.Had to cut them down slightly after.Measured now and its perfect.

Guys reckon that it improves the ride.is this true?

I fish off a butt with them, asked the skipper what he thought and can't remember exactly what he said but they were a winner. He is a very experienced skipper, spent his whole life on boats and butts. We go to the deep off CT and the ride is a loooooooot better than our little inshore cat, which is not bad at all actually. But wow does that new butt ride well (from a passengers perspective).
