Hi guys
I'm lookingto get a grinder setup for catching edibles. Something that can handle from shad to kob?
Do I look at a 11ft or 12ft rod with a grinder to match?
Any rods that are recommended? Medium budget

Have a look at the Adrenalin Triple X 12ft 4-6oz. Great rod for edibles. And if you call around you can get one for R900-R1000.

How tall are you?
What reel will you be pairing the rod with?
Are you looking at custom or off the shelf?
Planned sinker and bait weights?
Budget?

I'm new to surf fishing in general. I'm a short person. 12ft feels comfortable. Just need something to start with. An all rounder of sorts.
Reel I will have to pair with rod I end up going with.
Budget around 3k. Will be used mostly to catch edible fish.

Does your R3k budget include a reel?
The reason I ask is that for that kind of money for the rod you are very close to being in the market for a very nice custom built rod from Fishatic on the forum.
A custom built rod with low rider guides will way out perform anything off the shelf. You could definitely look at a DC oval in something around a 4oz casting weight.
Unfortunately I cant recall off hand what weights and lengths they come in, Brandon hasn't tempted me in a while :blush:

Yeah that includes the reel. Will go to a few tackle shops this week and see what's available. Thanks for the input. I felt a few rods. 12ft seemed the most comfortable for my height.

My first choice would be to get something custom built like Half-Pint mentioned. Brandon is the guy to go see but if you're in Durban this might be an issue. Nevertheless I suppose he can still build you a rod. Get in touch with him and ask him for some pics. I know he is waiting for blanks at the moment but speak to him.
The other option, if you are on a R3k budget all in is to pop in to Kingfisher on Hunter Street. They have the BG spinning rods on special at the moment. These rods come in 10ft and 11ft only though. If you can stretch the budget slightly, then the 11ft paired with the Daiwa BG4000 reel should set you back around R3.5k. Shad and kob will have nothing on this combo.
