Title: mods for "experienced" reel
Post by: adam on October 11, 2010, 10:51:34 AM
Hiya guys

I have a little sl20sh that has been a real workhorse for the past year or so.  I know its not the best reel on the market in its class, but I have grown quite attached to it.

So instead of upgrading I just want to upgrade the reel a bit.  If anyone knows of some decent modifications that can be made to it I will appreciate it.

Attached is some catches with the reel

Nice catches with it Adam!  (clap)

I have a philosophy... why fix it if it ain't broken? The SL class is a workhorse, the only thing I would do to it is maintain it. Check the bearings and replace them if necessary. No need for Carbontex in this size class, reckon it would be overkill; one thing you could do is to replace the cast control bushing with a Bearing - that would certainly make a difference. Other than that... love and care is all it needs!

thx reefman.  Its drag washers are pretty much worn through at the moment (still has those felt thingies).  I was thinking of carbontex but do you think I should replace them with something else rather?

If the Drag washers need replacing, then I'd certainly go for Carbontex - they should last a lifetime on the reel. What I was saying that the class fish you would be targetting with that setup wouldn't warrant replacing the washers just for the sake of pimping it. But if the others are worn, then certainly go the Carbontex route, it will certainly improve the performance!
