Title: Sea sick trip
Post by: Plugger on January 09, 2017, 10:29:45 AM
Shut down time so we were all off to the beach cottage. Got some Kwells seasick pills from Australia which were said to be the answer. I took two before we left the house and felt hopefull. Launched two Jetskis at Bazley and all  went well except the sand was really soft. No problem, out we went and all I felt was a dry mouth. Picked up our live bait and off we went following the current line. An hour in felt a bit sleepy but no problem.Got a bit of a hiding from a YFT of about 17kg which was released.(not keen on fish with red meat). We came across about 6 Manta rays playing on the surface, one huge one came within 30 cm of the back of the jetski and followed us for a while, awesome in crystal clear water. No further action so we beached at Bazley and went home. Then I started to feel very off colour and spent the rest of the day in bed.
I thought maybe two was a bit much so I took one and one with me and we launched at Umkomaas to try for some Dorries. Now sitting on the back of a Jetski there is not too much to hang onto when launching and once you are under the bridge you can't turn back. Out we went and I was hanging on with fingers like vice grips. The first swell was ok but there was as steeper one right behind it (all I could see was my sons back as he was standing up)There was no room to turn so he went up the swell, fine for him he's got handle bars to hold on to,my bum came off the seat and my ankles went sailing past my ears, with my weight off the seat it lifted a fraction and my fingers went in a bit further which was great for holding on but not so comfortable when my weight came back down.I managed to recover my position if not my dignity. The R&S guys were probably rolling on the floor. Anyway we got out and got some Mackies and off we went, conditions were great but not a pull, then the stomach started to rebel, took another Kwells and carried on. After a hour I gave up and we went back in. My other son and his wife got a monster Bonnie but that was all.Went home and felt even worse than the first time so it looks like the only seasickness cure for me will be to stand under a tree. The boys launched again at Bazley ,I watched from the verandah and felt wonderful. They got two Dorries and a YFT of 27kgs which gave them a 40 minute lesson.
The beach fishing was not so wonderful with only around 20 Shad (mostly under size) taking our lures. The pics are on my cell which is non compus mentos at the moment but I'll post them if and when I can.

I must say everything I used to take made me sleepy or just didn't work at all. Switched to taking one medizene tablet the night before we fish and its been years since ive been sick or tired. I give them to my sister and her boyfriend if I take them out and it works wonders for them too.

Fortunately, I've never been prone to sea sickness, I can't imagine how that must mess with the serious business of fishing. I've been told that eating ginger helps... Can anyone attest to this or is it a wives tale?

I love ginger and my favorite thirst quells are hot water with ginger, a dash of lemon and honey. Whether this is related or not I don't know but I have never had any motion sickness.

My best remedy for sea sickness is not to go offshore!

I'm afraid it looks like terra firma for me. The more firma the less terra. My late father was a Master Mariner doing the Far East run and was highly amused by my seasickness, though I did a trip with him from the UK to Durban when I was 16 and I was only sick for the first day, Different motion on a large vessel though.
My son is at Vidal now and says " lots of boats, perfect conditions but few fish," he got a Dorrie on live bait and dropped one on a Kona in 6 hours.

The secret is to take Stugeron the night before a trip then another pill 1 hour before launch.

Taking on the morning of your trip is too late

Funny enough I don't get seasick on a ski boat but did a cruise to Baz a few years ago and couldn't get out of bed for the whole trip duh either I took less pills and wanted to puke my lungs out or took more pills and fell asleep at the breakfast table :rotfl

Unfortunately I have to take a toothbrush with me, to push my lungs back down again.

I used to get seasick too, used to take a tablet called Navomind/Avomind/nevermind :dunno: (something like that, was long ago.. )Anyway, all changed once I started fishing with another mate of mine on his 16ft cc...he told me to try and keep my head level(try and look at horizon)and to move my hips to counter the rocking of the boat...it helped me,never got sick again, even when anchored/drifting...only drawback was, that a few hrs after fishing I'd unknowingly still be "jiving"  :yipee: at the kitchen counter while filleting the fish... :hehe: :cnfzd

I am a chummer of note.  I take Stugeron the night before and the morning of the launch. Also drink ginger beer and keep the head level.

What I have noticed that this regimen works as long as I get enough sleep the night before.

If I have a late night, nothing works and its back to the chumming.....

I discovered a tablet called "Stugeron". Can get it from the pharmacy and it is really cheap. It sorts me out! I swear by it! I take it myself and give it to any rookies who feel they may need it. We fish for hours and chow pies and drink coke and don't feel the slightest bit sick!

Strawberry Jam is the best thing.

Take 2 Table Spoons of Strawberry Jam before you head out.

May do nothing for your sea sickness but at least it will taste good on the way out  :crzy

I do not know what it is like to get sea sick.
As far as I know it is a mixed signal from your eyes and your ears to your brain and it is possible to think it away.

Peanut butter and apricot jam works in the same way :hyst:

When ever I start feeling it coming in I just gooi it and start getting busy immediately and it normally goes away

You guys should try a teaspoon of cement and harden the F up  :hyst: :crzy

Shame on crossing the Maputo bay on the 7th my wife and son chummed heavily....... there is just no cure for some albeit probably our worst crossing ever.

A few years back when I still struggled with sea sickness I tried Asics as prescribed by the great Dr Shag. That seemed to help but I still strongly believe that a lot of it, is in the mind. I see it on most outing. Crew freak themselves out so quickly, I quote " Shyte look at that swell", "Wow that's a lot of white horses", "Do you think the sea will be rough?", and my favourite "how's that surf?"   :hyst: :rotfl

By then your mind has lost the battle and you already fighting with yourself until you chuck. Stay calm, enjoy every moment out there and if you start feeling a little hot which for me is the first sign keep yourself cool with water over your head and neck.

hehe

only felt seasick once when setting up the livies...throw all out and had a nice sandwich after with some soda...I felt great after
