When using my teeth to hold the tag end of the braid when tying the FG knot I find that I have to have a tag end long enough to prevent my eyes from going squint and this loses a good few cm of braid each time I tie the knot. The braid often slips out of my teeth as well
So what I do now is to use forceps. I thread the handle of the forceps through my belt loop and then grip the tag end as long or short as I want. Now I can tie without going squint and I save a good few cm of braid as well. Of course you can attach the forceps to anything you want...like your fishing bag strap.

Crankman came up with a cunning little device recently that had 2 sprung clamps either end of some string. The string passes round behind your legs just above the knees (in sitting position) and the braid is clamped either side of the FG. By spreading your knees apart you can tension the braid and do the FG basically in front of you on your lap. It seems like a good idea.
Personally, I prefer my rod in a rod holder, clasping the braid in my teeth and applying tension against the bend in the rod. This way I also don't talk much while tying an FG... my fellow anglers like this :-)

Not too mention it must be very disconcerting having Crankman tell you to spread your legs wider while he is fiddling about with his rod :rotfl

And to prevent braid cutting your fingers when clinching the knot, I made these from dowel and thin closed cell foam.
Wrap the braid around one a few times and the leader around the other.....and then you can pull as hard as you like without leader or braid cutting into your hands and fingers. The foam prevents slipping and line burn
