Title: Okuma Azores - Z-55S - Review and Maintenance Tutorial
Post by: REEFMAN on August 07, 2016, 06:50:35 PM
(http://www.ultimateangling.co.za/articles/okuma/Okuma 1.jpg)

Here follows a short review of my findings regarding the Okuma Azores. Also a step by step Photographic tutorial on how to Service and Maintain the reel.

Let me say at the outset... I've never been a fan of Okuma products. This goes back a long time to the days when Okuma products were just cheap and nasty.
It seems however, that this is all changing... Okuma are upping their game it seems. First they brought out the Makaira offshore reels, which have proved themselves as very good value. Then they improved some of their spinning reels - the Salina springs to mind. So lets see...

The Okuma Azores 55S is a medium size spinning reel comparable in size to a Shimano 6000. Sporting 7 bearings and a whole lot of fancy names for it's "features".

I saw on the box:
Made in China. I always worry about that, although they say that not everything made in China is crud.

Priced at R1000. A decent solid feeling reel... very smooth.

Nice braid grip on the spool. Proper flared spool lip. Finishes pretty decent.

(http://www.ultimateangling.co.za/articles/okuma/Okuma 3.jpg)

The handle - decent size and shape!

Remove the Drag Knob. This reel has a "Dual Force Drag" system. Meaning 3 oiled felt washers up front and 1 larger Carbon Drag washer in the rear.

(http://www.ultimateangling.co.za/articles/okuma/Okuma 4.jpg)

(http://www.ultimateangling.co.za/articles/okuma/Okuma 5.jpg)

The Rear Carbon Drag washer

(http://www.ultimateangling.co.za/articles/okuma/Okuma 6.jpg)

The spool support and spindle are fixed to the spool shaft and cannot be removed. To remove the spool shaft, one needs to open up the gearbox to unscrew it.

(http://www.ultimateangling.co.za/articles/okuma/Okuma 7.jpg)

The reel has Torx screws throughout. A good albeit irritating feature. It's much more difficult to strip the head of a Torx screw.

(http://www.ultimateangling.co.za/articles/okuma/Okuma 8.jpg)

This is what a Torx driver looks like as opposed to an Allen key.

(http://www.ultimateangling.co.za/articles/okuma/Okuma 8B.jpg)

So, remove 4 screws in a flash, and one is in the Gearbox!!

(http://www.ultimateangling.co.za/articles/okuma/Okuma 9.jpg)

Flippin awesome! These reels that provide direct access to the gearbox without having to remove Rotors, Anti-reverse bearings etc. are a major WIN!!  (clap)

4 SCREWS and you have access to the engine room and bearings. Easy peasy to ensure good maintenance!

(http://www.ultimateangling.co.za/articles/okuma/Okuma 10.jpg)

(http://www.ultimateangling.co.za/articles/okuma/Okuma 11.jpg)

The Azores has Carbon impregnated inserts on all the side plates and Anti-revrse housing. What this does is to limit the contact between different alloys, which often causes electrolysis and galvanic reaction corrosion. Nice feature!

(http://www.ultimateangling.co.za/articles/okuma/Okuma 12.jpg)

The Gearbox and Engine room...

(http://www.ultimateangling.co.za/articles/okuma/Okuma 13.jpg)

To remove the Drive shaft, unscrew the Oscillating slider.

(http://www.ultimateangling.co.za/articles/okuma/Okuma 14.jpg)

Now the shaft can be removed.

(http://www.ultimateangling.co.za/articles/okuma/Okuma 15.jpg)

Spool support is fixed to the Drive shaft

(http://www.ultimateangling.co.za/articles/okuma/Okuma 16.jpg)

Take out the Drive gear...

(http://www.ultimateangling.co.za/articles/okuma/Okuma 17.jpg)

Now we can remove the Rotor nut and Rotor.

(http://www.ultimateangling.co.za/articles/okuma/Okuma 18.jpg)

Underneath the Rotor, one can see the Bail trip lever

(http://www.ultimateangling.co.za/articles/okuma/Okuma 19.jpg)

The Anti-reverse spring

(http://www.ultimateangling.co.za/articles/okuma/Okuma 20.jpg)

(http://www.ultimateangling.co.za/articles/okuma/Okuma 21.jpg)

(http://www.ultimateangling.co.za/articles/okuma/Okuma 22.jpg)

Remove the Anti-reverse Retainer plate.

(http://www.ultimateangling.co.za/articles/okuma/Okuma 23.jpg)

(http://www.ultimateangling.co.za/articles/okuma/Okuma 24.jpg)

Now you can remove the Pinion gear and bearings. Note the 2 Pinion gear bearings, which helps stabilize the Pinion from side play.

(http://www.ultimateangling.co.za/articles/okuma/Okuma 25.jpg)

(http://www.ultimateangling.co.za/articles/okuma/Okuma 26.jpg)

The Oscillating gear is secured by a screw and is housed upon one of the Carbon inserts in the RH Side plate.

(http://www.ultimateangling.co.za/articles/okuma/Okuma 27.jpg)

The Pinion gear assembly

(http://www.ultimateangling.co.za/articles/okuma/Okuma 28.jpg)

The Anti-reverse bearing.
A bit disappointed at the lack of quality and sturdiness of the Plastic springs. One has already deformed...!

(http://www.ultimateangling.co.za/articles/okuma/Okuma 30.jpg)

The Anti-reverse Carbon housing.

(http://www.ultimateangling.co.za/articles/okuma/Okuma 31.jpg)

Remove the spring holder

(http://www.ultimateangling.co.za/articles/okuma/Okuma 32.jpg)

Remove the Oscillating gear

(http://www.ultimateangling.co.za/articles/okuma/Okuma 33.jpg)

(http://www.ultimateangling.co.za/articles/okuma/Okuma 34.jpg)

(http://www.ultimateangling.co.za/articles/okuma/Okuma 35.jpg)

The Anti-reverse Carbon housing can be removed entirely. Underneath... hmmm really grubby finishes! A paper sticker used during the paint process hasn't been removed properly.

(http://www.ultimateangling.co.za/articles/okuma/Okuma 36.jpg)

(http://www.ultimateangling.co.za/articles/okuma/Okuma 37.jpg)

The Gearbox insert can be removed entirely

(http://www.ultimateangling.co.za/articles/okuma/Okuma 38.jpg)

Rubber Sealed bearings throughout! Nice feature! The rubber seals can be removed with a blade and replaced.

(http://www.ultimateangling.co.za/articles/okuma/Okuma 39.jpg)

(http://www.ultimateangling.co.za/articles/okuma/Okuma 39B.jpg)

Another grubby finish. Doesn't affect the reel, but just quality control suspect. The LH Side plate insert was chipped.

(http://www.ultimateangling.co.za/articles/okuma/Okuma 40.jpg)

So what we have...

(http://www.ultimateangling.co.za/articles/okuma/Okuma 41.jpg)

Some tips on re-assembly.
Follow the tut backwards and you should be fine.

(http://www.ultimateangling.co.za/articles/okuma/Okuma 42.jpg)

Align the spring in it's holder properly.

(http://www.ultimateangling.co.za/articles/okuma/Okuma 43.jpg)

(http://www.ultimateangling.co.za/articles/okuma/Okuma 44.jpg)

Replace the Rotor.

(http://www.ultimateangling.co.za/articles/okuma/Okuma 45.jpg)

Assemble the gear box as you disassembled it. Follow the pics above in reverse.

(http://www.ultimateangling.co.za/articles/okuma/Okuma 46.jpg)

Only now can the Drive shaft be replaced.

(http://www.ultimateangling.co.za/articles/okuma/Okuma 47.jpg)

Take special note of the alignment of the shaft and it's placement into the Slider.

(http://www.ultimateangling.co.za/articles/okuma/Okuma 48.jpg)

Screw the shaft back in

(http://www.ultimateangling.co.za/articles/okuma/Okuma 48B.jpg)

(http://www.ultimateangling.co.za/articles/okuma/Okuma 49.jpg)

THE DUAL DRAG SYSTEM
Under the spool... is the Rear Drag Carbon washer

Remove the retainer spring and the Metal plate in one piece.

(http://www.ultimateangling.co.za/articles/okuma/Okuma 50.jpg)

(http://www.ultimateangling.co.za/articles/okuma/Okuma 51.jpg)

To servce the spring retained washer, it can be unscrewed. This is not usually necessary.

(http://www.ultimateangling.co.za/articles/okuma/Okuma 52.jpg)

(http://www.ultimateangling.co.za/articles/okuma/Okuma 53.jpg)

(http://www.ultimateangling.co.za/articles/okuma/Okuma 54.jpg)

Inside the Spool arm, one can see the Bail trip lever. These are really useless bits these days. The lever can be removed completely to prevent problems later on with the Bail tripping over on a cast.

(http://www.ultimateangling.co.za/articles/okuma/Okuma 55.jpg)

The Bail arm is very interesting....!
Can be removed entirely, cleaned and replaced.
The Roller has a bearing inside, nice!

(http://www.ultimateangling.co.za/articles/okuma/Okuma 56.jpg)

(http://www.ultimateangling.co.za/articles/okuma/Okuma 57.jpg)

(http://www.ultimateangling.co.za/articles/okuma/Okuma 58.jpg)

To replace the Bail arm...

(http://www.ultimateangling.co.za/articles/okuma/Okuma 59.jpg)

(http://www.ultimateangling.co.za/articles/okuma/Okuma 60.jpg)

And there you have it.

Conclusion:
A fantastic entry level reel, with features that are included in reels twice the price! Priced to go at R1000!
Solid construction with a big drag capability.
Great feature to be able to service the reel by removing 4 screws!! Huge plus!
Rubber sealed bearings and Carbon inserts to stop Galvanic reactions.
Besides   some minor finishing issues, I am really impressed! Couldn't find fault   in it besides the plastic springs in the Anti-reverse.
Line lay is not perfect, but will certainly work with a little playing around with spacer washers (provided in the box).
This reel is bang for buck for sure. Gonna rattle the cages of some of the bigger manufacturers!

Big thanks to Zberg for the use of his reel.

Thanks for the review Reefs. I am very impressed by my Cedros 10 L/Drag reels. Beautifully made. The research that I did prior to buying them indicated to me that Okuma is still trying very hard to make a name for themselves in SA (It don't think it helped them to have picked Midas as their agent)... but prices in the US (where they are known and respected) verged on double the prices locally. I also had a Salina 11 but have since sold it because I just didn't ever get round to using it.

The new Okuma Metaloid is effectively an Azores with forged stainless pinion and main gears.
Might not reel as quietly, but should be as tough as nails.

From what I've seen, it retails at $199 - that's triple the price of the Azores??

Awesome review and maintenance tut, as always!

Great seeing a decent offering come in at that price point.  Didn't know what to expect - some popular fishing tackle stores in Gauteng are holding off from stocking these due to "quality considerations".  I can see how this stigma perpetuated from a history of offering beginner ranges in SA for so long - by that I basically mean being able to buy a product in SPAR...

Erm, more but not triple.
Local prices are very seldom in line with US prices, but tackledirect has Metaloid on pre-order at $190, vs $120 for the Azores.
Forging stainless steel is an expensive process.
Interesting to compare the local price of around R1000 with the US online price of $120 for the Azores. We pay less.....

I now have two z55's, very happy so far.
Only use them for my 11ft spinning outfits, still running as smooth as new but being GP based they dont get constant use/abuse so I cant speak to the longevity of the reel.
It casts a line well, will swallow plenty of braid and have a pretty quick retrieve so the arms dont fall off as soon when throwing plugs and spoons for long periods, zero wind knots thus far at all.
That said... I havent managed to box anything bigger than around 3 to 4lbs in size yet on either so havent even come close to stretching them properly.

There have been a few reports of Azores reels failing, but that's been on using the reel for a purpose they weren't intended...

Alan Hawk rates them... http://www.alanhawk.com/reviews/lists.html (http://www.alanhawk.com/reviews/lists.html)

Think the most important thing is that they are relatively cheap reels, so don't use them beyond their capabilities. All in all, they're good value reels in the budget range.

Can you elaborate Reefman?

Interesting seeing this, I recall some spin fisherman were early adopters but stopped using the reels cold turkey after a few months.  Never seen any explanation, just seen them go back to using their regular gear. Wondering why...

I can't remember where I saw the discussion?  swr From what I remember I think it was an overseas forum and the issues were seized reels from stripped gears and an anti-reverse bearing failure.  :dunno:

But that is bound to happen with any reel if you fish it beyond it's limits. On YouTube their is a lot of videos where you see guys winching a massive fish with a reel that is way too small for what they use it for.

Reefman I know this is a bit off topic, but if you had to choose between the new Daiwa BG  5500/6500 and the Penn SpinFisher 6500, which one would you buy. Want to use it for bait fishing in the surf for edibles. Thinking about upping my budget and getting a descent setup, rather than buying cheap and having to replace frequently.

Absolutely correct Tony.

Its a good budget offering at a pretty low price point.
If you need serious equipment or "want"/"need" a benchmark reel, then this is not the buy to make.
Then you need to pony up some extra bucks for the class benchmark products.

Realistically the price competitors to this are Penn fierce II or Shimano Sedona type of reels.

I'd go with the BG. Just on the basis of Alan Hawk's astoundingly good review of the reel... and the fact that many SA anglers are now using this reel with great success.

The Bg is definitely the better reel but at twice the price. So depending on how often you will be using the reel  I would take the price difference also into consideration .

Brilliant reel and best bang for buck in my opinion... Fished 2 seasons only spinning and reel has performed extremely well. Only downside is it heavier when compared to the stradic 5000... I have the z55 paired with 11ft Amia. Comfortable to fish with for a few hours at a time and casts well too.  :tite

I've recently noticed the start of a failure on my Azores Z-55S  - please can someone help point me in the right direction as what bearings to replace and where to source them.  Now for the details:

I've mostly enjoyed this reel, and landed a few nice fish with it - but when I crank the handle and let it "free wheel" when line is tucked away - I notice that it's not spinning very freely anymore. 2 rotations and then stops abruptly, also not smooth anymore. Then last week I went yellowtail fishing and the added pressure of 3.5kg fish on the line made the reel perform very poorly.  I struggled to crank it and it made a horrible almost grating sound.

I purchased this reel used (in excellent condition) and have also had a few break offs where I have put the reel under high pressure until the line snapped, so it's not some kind of manufacturing fault - just think a bearing has been put under too much pressure and needs replacing. I have kept it away from sand and rinsed in fresh water after use.  I'm happy to DIY this issue, just need help with someone suggesting which bearings to replace and where I can source them from please.  Cape Town City Bowl based.

Thank you!

Thanks very much for an informative tutorial again Reefman!!

A question from a Vaalie who will use a spinning setup like this twice a year, which reel would you prefer between the Penn Fierce 2 5000 and the Okuma Azores z-55s? I think the Okuma is R150 odd more.

I am looking to pair the reel with the Loomis Archipelago 11ft and 20lb Boss braid slick.

As my budget is limited and I am looking for a relatively robust & multi purpose spinning setup for Garrick, Kob, Shad, Natal snoek etc on lures. Would you say that it would be a decent setup?

Kind regards

Nathan

In my opinion, both those reels are too big to use on an 11ft rod. Shimano size 5000 would be the biggest I'd use. The Azores Z-55 is about the Shimano 6000 size.

Thanks Reefman!

I have now had a look at the Shimano Sedona C5000XG and it retails for around R1000 which is smack bang on my budgets limit. Would this Sedona then be a better choice than the Penn Fierce 2 in a 4000 (R1050) size and the Okuma z40 (R1200)?

Thanks for your patience with me

In my opinion, you can't go much wrong with a Shimano spinning reel. I have a Sedona myself and it's a solid reel. I've never fished with either of the others, so can't really compare honestly. If it was me, no question I'd go for the Shimano.

So I've been having this gradual decline in my Azores 55 - where I thought a bearing was sticking.  Basically the spool would only spin half a revolution when free in my hand - it felt like a stuck bearing.  So I tore it down completely and none of the bearings were bad - all smooth.  Then I tried to turn the oscillator gear by hand and it was seizing up.  So I pulled it off, cleaned it and it was still sticking.

I managed to solve the problem by taking off a tiny amount of the gears inner bush mating surface using a fine tooth crescent file in a small lathe and then buffing it with 800 waterpaper.  Added some grease and perfect again.  I probably took of 0.2mm or so - very little but enough to make the reel freespool for 4 turns again.  Not Shimano smooth - but much better than it was.  You could do this without a lathe by using 400 grit paper rolled into a stick and inserted into the centre of the gear - spin it a few times repeatedly until you have taken off just enough to make it fit perfectly.  Don't over do this! You will then have to buff and de-burr with 800 paper before you can refit.

I'm not sure what made the body of the graphite bush swell up - but there would be no other way to fix this Okuma Azores 55 problem.

Maybe this helps someone.

I recently bought myself a Okuma Azores 65S and tried it for the first time, but I got a huge surprise on the performance on this reel. Very powerful and with great handling. I am leaving for Port Alfred to do some test runs there. Is there any suggestions or tips for that area as it is my first trip there. Leaving at the end of June.

Wanted to see if anyone else had an issue with the Azores Z65 slipping when reeling. It almost feels like the gears are stripped but I have replaced all 3 gears with new Okuma parts and it still strips when minimum pressure is placed on the reel as you crank it in. Any suggestions??

Sounds like anti-reverse faulty? If you can get at it, it is either shot or grease has built up stopping the springs from functioning..?

Could be your handle thread has stripped?
Also check all the bearings.
So what you could do as well, is to take the gearbox sideplate off and use the handle on the reel. Turn it to try give you an idea of what's causing the issue. You can visually inspect as the reel is working.

Dear All.
I bought the Okuma Z90 in January and used it as my heavy surf outfit for the past 6 months (every 2nd weekend).
So the reel has seen some work.

My anti-reversed bearing failed on the last trip.
On disassembly the bearing was heavily corroded.
(I have had the reel serviced once in this period, and generally rinse it off when I return from the waters).

Where can I purchase a new bearing?
And can I possibly upgrade to a bearing of better quality?

I'm still testing the reel, but so far I like it.
Except for the AR bearing because a failure after 6 months just feel very prematurely.

Regards

Hey bro you mind to put that into english for us?

I got the "tuna reel" part and guessing they sent you a spare part that does not match the original? My opinion..is that is no tuna reel!? LOL :hyst:
https://www.avetreels.net/reels/hxw-rap-series-lever-drag-casting-reel.html (https://www.avetreels.net/reels/hxw-rap-series-lever-drag-casting-reel.html)
Get one of these..that's a tuna reel!

Or if you want to spin for tuna..get a shimano..Anything in their range these days from saragosa upwards will handle tuna no problemo..I haven't seen one of those azores lasting more than a season here, normally far less, without gear failure or getting really rough. As a comparison, I am still spinning with my 6years old Shimano stradic and it is smooth as silk after hundreds of gamefish. Only things replaced over the years are the drag washers and line roller bearing, the drag clicker has not worked in ages but I don't like a noisy reel anyway. It caught a big elf/shad/bluefish this week and a nice cob (drum/corvina). I bought a replacement incase it broke when the new ones came out 2 years ago and it never gets fished as the old one is still going like new. That reel has been fished hard, season in and season out, and has caught hundreds of small tuna/bonito among many others.

what I meant is that this store was not correct with parts that sold me
Tuna's Reel Troubles  78 Nelson Rd.  Ludington, Mi. 49431
andycopenhaver@hotmail.com the curvature of absence provided in part caused by contact scratches on the reel cover structure

installing the washers was not enough to avoid

this would not have happened if curvature existed :cg: :sreel:

WRONG PART
seller ([/ size] Tuna's Reel Troubles) This store is intended to be an original part.
which send sent photo clearly shows a curvature in the original
absence of curvature makes the working part come in contact with the spool structure

the part provided by
It is a flat piece and so it comes into contact with the spool frame
I'm very upset that I can't return the pieces

Bom dia Tapioca,

A unica solucao se o material nao for muito rijo para mecanizar um radio como o original, para fazer um relevo contra o corpo do carreto.

Na foto parece que o carretel de fabrica tem menos espessura , portanto e possivel que se mecanize igual o original.
