Title: Old Abu Garcias
Post by: CRANKMAN on August 04, 2015, 09:43:22 AM
I have been doing a tackle clean up, giving away old rods and reels that don't get used any more. At the bottom of the pile I found 2 old Abu 3's that I inherited from my father inlaw in Scotland many many years ago. I was about to pass them on to the neighbors kids to use as  :brbel:  rods, then thought I better check with the pros, maybe they can be salvaged.

The rods are old, but almost unused. Their specs
They have horrible reel seats that can be moved up or down the long cork handles - but by their own design, tend to work loose during the fight. The joiner pieces are heavy stainless steel and the eyes are bloody ugly. With all the cork and steel, the rods are quite heavy compared to modern rods, but I think the blanks are quite decent.

Would it be an option to strip them down and refit with decent reel seats and eyes? I have no emotional attachment to them, so it would have to be financially sensible.

Doubt these would be worth the cost of getting them fixed  :dunno: . Don't know these blanks at all. I'd keep them as collector's pieces... mount them in your pub!
I chuckled at the size of that stripping guide on the yellow rod!!  :shk

Reefz, I just gave them away, literally a few minutes before you posted this. Someone in the cape advertised on gumtree that he collects old Abus. I am sure he will get better value from them than me. Said he could have them if he made a plan to transport them.

These rods are looking for a home again.
The guy in Cape town never got back to me.
If anyone has a use for them and is willing to transport - they are yours at no charge.
I could get them as far as Pretoria University or Jo'berg Fourways in the next couple of weeks.

Hi there , would be keen to take them off your hands.
I'm in Pretoria so no rush.
I also have some old collectible Abu reels.

Must actually post some pics of my vintage collection, some dead, but still nostalgic.
