I normally use a bimini twist for my double lines when getting my gear ready for an outing.
On the boat if I need to make a loop in a hurry I use the old trusty spider hitch.
I came across a knot called the surgeons loop the other day and wondered if anyone knew the comparative strengths between it and the spider hitch
Simply as the surgeons loop is easier to tie in a rough sea.
Any feedback would be appreciated.

Plenty of guys use the Surgeons loop with success, so it's simple and works. Maybe not the strongest join, but then nor is the Spider Hitch. Just don't do either of these knots in Braid, not recommended.

I find both knots similar. I tie them almost in the same way. Surgeons loop basically three turn overhand knot. Spider hitch three turns except the three turns go over the doubled line that goes in both directions and then through. (Basically three turns over 4 strands of line) I also tie it as I described, no need for thumb or toothpick. I'm pretty sure it comes out identical, and if you look at pictures on how to do it it makes sense.
They both vulnerable to knot fatigue imo. Both become weaker every time they put under pressure, but are strong at first. Bimini is still a better option, especially seeing these loops are normally the weakest point between reel and fish which makes it probably the most important knot in the entire setup.

I always do 6 turns on the spider with 10kg and 15kg and 5 turns on 24kg. I don't use it on anything heavier. Stands up fine on a day trip for tuna fishing 10kg drag on 24, if it is too hectic to tie a bimini. Wouldn't use it in a comp though...
Personally I stay away from the surgeons. Used to use it to make a dropper for fly fishing, got broken up a few times and lost confidence.

I stay away from a surg loop , cost me a big fish once .
Spider hitch for me works fine , 6 to 10 wraps
