Title: Joining Braid backing to nylon-
Post by: tkei on November 14, 2014, 03:47:37 PM
One of my brothers tyrnos 50's had straight mon on it that was shot so we replacing. All our other reels have dacron backing and then 250-350 50lb topshot.
We cant get 50lb dacron here at the moment and he is going marlin fishing next week so need to respool this weekend. He can get 50lb HMP backing braid (600m) or use ravex 80lb braid. Will the 50 cut through the nylon under pressure as its thin.

I usually double bimini the nylon and dacron and cats paw. is this also the knot to use for braid? I dont want to spend a fortune on fuel, get the strike and then have it cut off by using wrong join.
I would prefer dacron but as I said there isn't any in El at the moment, only 80lb which is too thick.

Ya Adam, that's the way we do it in R/s. Bimini in 50lb braid (40 turns), Bimini in mono (20 turns) and join with a CatsPaw. Not much to beat this join.

Thanks Reefs, just wondered if there was another better way. I got some winding ahead for me this weekend. 1 tyrons 50 and 2 tld 50's.

Put the spool in an electirc drill, goes chop-chop!

That knot has held up to some BIG tuna, 80lb braid to 80lb topshot! Can't think of a better knot for that application!
Tight lines and enjoy the winding!
Reefs, the drill only works to take line OFF! I have however seen a VERY nice tool, also using a drill, which actually spools your reel. Reel is fitted to a real-seat, with the reel handle connecting to another handle, which is powered by a drill.

Thats cheating, but I do do that to empty the old line oof.
I see on your tut ont he cats paw you pass it through 12-14 times with braid. for dacron i only do about 4-5. is it necessary to do as many as 14?

In my experience,  CERTAINLY not! 5-7 is plenty for 80lb.

Currently I do 8 turns in the Catspaw with 50lb braid. I have spooled several reels using a drill. Just need to cover the spool shaft with some cloth to protect it in the chuck. Aso need to make sure you spool in the right direction  duh
Works very well with braid especially , getting it nice and tight. The spool of line I mount in another drill in a vice, which keeps tension for you.

Use 80lb rather than 50. 5 - 8 times through. Just done 4 x 30's with 10kg (almost 5kms) for nationals - all manual. Good training for when the big girl takes :billf:

Is the bimini as strong a a stitched loop?

Bimini is supposed to have 100% knot strength if tied correctly.

No it's not. Stitched loop in braid is always first prize, but you can't stitch Mono!

What about the PR knot?

I would  think that 50 or 80lb mono is not thick enough for braid to bite into it using a PR and if it did it would part pretty quickly?

Not quite so Prego, I use it on 30lb braid to 50lb leader very successfully on my spinning and jigging tackle.

any "knot" in braid is going to weaken it.
splice is the way to go, or pr/fg knot imo

Have a look at how a Bimini "weakens" (or not) your line...
"More about double lines

If you tie a double line to the leader, you then place the knot used (Bimini, spider hitch, surgeon's, etc.) between the single line and the leader, and you need to know the breaking strength of that knot. In this case, I tied some quick 12-turn Biminis and found they averaged about 45 pounds (Tied with 30lb Suffix, tested to break at 46lb average) at the break point. Using that as a benchmark, with these materials, any knot connecting a double line to leader that breaks at 45pounds is 100 percent - relative to the Bimini."

What is the breaking strain on that line without a knot in it at all?

Would a bob sands not work for this?

Biminis work well with braid it was developed for the old flax lines then Dacron so it's well suited to braid as it isn't affected by friction heat like mono. For Mono doubles I prefer the Aussie plait there's no heat build up and and therefore no deformation in  the line it's a very forgiving know of I  mono as  well as being given easier to tie when you want a long double line.

I am not disputing that a PR is the strongest, as we all know it is almost a 100% connection. I just thought it being topshot/main line and not leader the braid would eventually cut through it

Keep in mind that the knot works on the Chinese finger cuff principle it clamps down on the line so it can't cut through it. In theory it should work fine but I think the added security of catspawing two doubles together would let my mind rest at ease  a bit more.

Most of the above-mentioned knots will work.

The trick is for you to find a join that you are confident with, can reproduce consistently time and time again, and (for the R/Surfers) be able to reproduce consistently on a beach in a wind, and perhaps in the dark.

For me, my backing knot of choice is the 2 Bimini's joined by the CatsPaw. Can reproduce these consistently and without error in my time of need!

Hi Guys, I hope this is not the dumbest question ever. Making a catspaw, is that with the braid or the mono, in other words does the braid grip on the mono or the mono on the braid? This is a new concept for me and I don't want to pay schoolfees.

Thanks for the best school UA.

Thanks Reefman

The best explanation ever. Now I know too.
