Title: leisure bay
Post by: kevf on November 09, 2014, 05:43:20 AM
Off to leisure bay next weekend and will be staying at a cottage on the top(northern) side of the TO strand beach, looks like a small point there? would like to put my Amia to use, been a long time! Is anyone familiar with the place? anything in particular I need to know :tkx:

you can fish to the south - reef species, shad and cob
And it you do a "little" walk to north there is a point where they have drilled holes for rods. Cob, bream, flatfish and I assume sharks.

Pilchards, chokka, prawn and combos of them will work.

Pretty much typical for that part of the coast, fishing is always tough there. It is however, one of my favourite parts of the world and I know it fairly well.
You have a couple of options to fish there:

1) Pulpit Rock: Glenmore beach
Deep water point and apparently some serious sharks have been caught there, esp in the old days. You'll need heavy tackle and be able to cast pretty far. Not sure about flatties but you should get sharks there if the conditions are right. Big slide baits (mackies/bonnies) or live Shad/Karanteen will work well. Have seen large Garrick caught to the LHS off submarine rock as well, so very possible you could hook one there.

2) Ladder Rock: between Glenmore and Kidds beach
Another deep water point, you'll need a ladder to get up there and it's damn slippery (DANGEROUS). Good for sharks, but have caught Stone Bream, Natal Stumpies, Karanteen, Shad and crays there.
Again big slide baits and live bait will work well here. May also be a good spot for swim baits, but never tried it before.

3) Peter Pan Bay: RHS of Kidds Beach
A good spot both on the LHS & RHS of the gulley/bay. Caught Shad, Kob and other reef fish there. Have heard of Bronze Bream, Yellow-Belly Rockcod and other interesting rock fish caught there. Shad come thick during winter months. Whole sards, prawns and chokka blob baits work well here.

4) Unknown point/rock: Leisure Bay
A local mentioned to me there is another deepwater point/rock formation to fish off for large sharks. I don't know much about it or where it is, apparently large Zambi's have been caught there as well as Sandie's. You'll need to ask the dude that owns the beer shop/bottle store (hidden gem) along the road between Peter Pan Bay and the N2 to Port Edward.

You also have the options of fishing off Glenmore beach, to the RHS below the hotel you have submarine rock and other rocks to fish off for edibles, Shad, Stumpies, Grunter, Karanteen, Kob, Barble etc. Good place to fish for Garrick if using a live Shad to the RHS of submarine rock. The bay on the LHS (Glenmore beach bay) is good for throwing spoons for Shad and Pompano (three spot) and have caught Lesser Sandie's in the bay on chokka and sard combo's (running sinker trace).

I hope that helps. I know the area pretty well and although the fishing is never good, the place more than makes up for it. Get your bait at Gremlins in Margate, they are simply the best.

Mpenjatie, a bit further north also sounds like a great spot. I have heard that wearing clothes there is optional, since they are turning it into a nudist beach. I wonder, would having a bucket around your waist be considered clothing?
