Title: Minimum type rod for sliding
Post by: Assassin on November 03, 2014, 01:31:50 PM
Hi guys,

Please advise as to what is the most basic or entry level 14ft rod that I can use to slide out a bait.
I'm on a very tight budget and I won't be using it as much as I would be using my medium and light kits.

I have a Saltist 50 and Assassin BeachMaster Lite but it only throws 6oz max.
Will trying to throw an 8oz grap break the rod?
I tested the reel at Mazeppa and was amazed at what it can do so I'm not changing my reel for a long time.

Is there any good rod out there that can throw an 8oz grap that won't make a dent in my wallet?
Or is there anything that I can do to "upgrade" my existing rod?

Impossible to tell without specifying your budget. How much do you have to spend?

You like the Assassin Beachmaster Lite? Then go for the Beachmaster Toray Heavy... good value for money... and a nice place to start.

No problem. Plenty you can do with that. I would look for a second hand Heavy HMG for that price.
Check out the Classifieds section for sales. PM KING-GT, he had a Poseidon Heavy HMG for sale, R2000.

Thanks. I'll check it out at a tackle store near me.

Is a 13ft good enough for sliding and landing non-eds?
Will it go well with a Saltist 50?

Assassin if you not adverse to a one piece rod, I have a Purglas 400/6 that's gathering dust. Even belts a 10oz easy peasy. PM me if you interested.

Yes and yes. The Saltist 50 is a great non-ed reel, provided you have 500-600m of 50lb braid backing.

The 13ft works better when fishing for sharks, the shorter rod means a lot of pulling power with less strain on the fisherman. You will loose a bit of distance on the cast, but that is about it.

BTW I use mine with a Saltist 50BG and with my Penn60 Leverdrag.

Thanks guys. I never knew a 13ft rod will do the trick.
I'll look into that. The more compact the kit, the easier it is for me when traveling.

Rory, thanks for the offer but unfortunately I'm not a fan of using a one-piece rod.
I prefer not to have anything sticking out my car when driving.
Back in the days the rods were breaking when going past trees etc. And leaving my window open won't help when the AC is on.

Thanks again guys for the feedback.
Much appreciated.
