So yesterday my arm was twisted my son to take him fishing. We went to a venue above the barrage as I thought the fishing will be better than my local sewer canal(klip river). We baited up and waited and nothing happened. So I threw a few flies to into a little bay and hooked a bass that was lost as no one wanted to bring a net for me.
For the next 30 min nothing took my flies and I was called back to our rods by the frantic calls for my son and wife holding a rod. Darius landed a small carp which was returned after a fight because he wanted to braai the poor thing.

We lost another huge carp as I struggled with the freshwater grinders drag. Fishing was quiet after that until we saw a dead muddy drifting by which my son wanted to inspect. It was out of reach but I thought I might hook it with a fly so gave a few casts in its direction. I did not manage to hook it, but foul hooked this little carp in the process. It was a surprise for both of us and I for one did not complain.

This one was released with a smile because we managed to convince my son that river fish are dirty. And I have to say that he enjoyed doing it.

Today I took the little one to the barrage again where we met Herman as he came off the water. I landed one fat muddie the fishing died down after that and Die Oom made me his secret bait out of bread and Windhoek. We baited and Darius landed a nice fat carp(on the windhoek) 10 minutes later he landed a huge carp +-70cm also on the secret bait. By now the young man was seriously hooked and would not move more than 2m away from his rod. He landed another fat carp after which the fish reached the legal limit for the vaal and we had no other takers. After using a crowbar I managed to pry Darius away from the water and we headed home. some pics:

I have made a mistake the big fish was a yellow and not a carp. So the little man is a better fisherman than his dad.

The young gent asked me to take him fishing and since he said please I was compelled to take him. Mom decided to tag along and we settled on our favorite spot below the barrage. I had little hope of anything happening with the cold front that passed but any day spent next to the water is well spent.
After replacing the baits a few times without even a single take, I attached a weight to the end of the line and gave Darius casting practice. After a few casts we just heard "Ag shame dit is n baba vis" (shame it is a baby fish). He managed to hook a lure that a bass fisherman left in the water along with a length of line.
We then swapped the sinker for the lure and I managed to hook a bass after a few casts, Darius took over from me and landed the fish. We did not manage any other takes, but it was a great yet windy day on the water.
I have to add that I wanted to kill the thing but I was out voted by the rest of the family.

We visited the vaal again today and did we have some fun. Darius landed 3 muddies and 1 yellow. 2 of the muddies came in just over 2Kg and the yellow at 1.2kg but it gave quite a decent fight. We used Joff's carp dough and after seeing me making it Darius decided to make his own as well. He baited the hooks himself and I only had to do the casting.
I tried for some bass as I left my fly rod at home. I hooked a sizer of a fish that restored my faith in a bass' fighting ability only for the fish to be a nice 2kg muddie that I hooked in the tail with a rappala. Quite a few of the other fisherman helped me as the fight lasted a few minutes. I lost a real bass later when me an Darius had a double up and I applied way too much force.

I wish I can find the time to go fish. Good to see some muddies coming out. The barbel should also start to come out. Nice to see you and the family enjoying time out in nature. :envy

So Darius told me he is sick, sick and tired of his boring home and that he wants to go fishing. So we pack the bags and go to our favorite venue. And boy was it slow... all the other other anglers complained about the lack of fish appart from this one oom that was nailing big carp, but he was sitting in our honey hole!
After trying every bait that we had, and me giving up on catching a fish I hear this little voice behind me with a bended rod in his hand. Fighting the fish like an old pro and enduring 2 runs the lad brought the fish home for a quick weigh, photo and a release.

Sorry for the late report, last weekend I had to keep my son and his friend entertained. After learning that the friend has never caught a fish I took it upon myself to further the education the young man. I took them to one of our venues on the barrage where I knew not many long weekenders will be and we had a blast.
At first the lads had no interest in fishing, they kept busy riding bicycles and other boy "stuff" that earned them a sore bottom. Not long after I managed to get some bait in the water the one rod almost leaped into the water. None of the boys was interested in taking the rod but they had no interest. I had to land the fish which turned out to be a 3,6Kg carp. That caught their attention.
After that each boy managed to to land 2 fish, muddies and yellows and a small carp, making turns to reel in the fish and netting it. It was so funny how they almost fought each other for the chance to release the fish.

Let me revive an old thread...
Beginning of the year late one evening, Darius decided that I have neglected his passion for fishing way too long and that I have to take him to the river the next day. One of his demands was that he needs to catch a barbel as they are “cool”. After a frantic late night stock check, frog and cricket hunt, we headed to our favorite spot. (Quick confession all frogs were used to frighten mom into a new blood group and never joined us on the trip)
I baited up 2 rods for Darius, and one for myself. And it was not 2 minutes until he landed a barbel. A small one but still it made his day. There after he caught fish one after the other all muddies and yellows ranging from 500g to almost 2kg. My rod only managed to hook a small yellow that wanted to eat a bollie that was bigger than its head.
After a nice days fishing we packed up and I asked him to reel in all the lines. He picked up my rod and said “Pappa dit sit vas...” and I had to look on as he was battling a huge fish on my rod! After a nice battle he managed to bring the fish to the side, but battled to bring it to the net. Then under difficult circumstances, I managed to drop the fish back into the water, uttering some expressive words. This resulted into a phone call to his mom complaining about me being an incapable dad using bad words in front of his innocent son.
The fish must have been 8Kg+ and it will haunt me and him until he catches a bigger one. But this year I will make time and effort to take UA's best angler fisherman, fishing and I will also do my utmost not to drop his trophy fish back into the water without pictures and a weighing it first... on the bright side the fish does grow each time he retells the story to his mom.

I am joining a friend and her family to go fishing at the barrage at the end of September for the long weekend. Could someone please inform me how the road is to access the venue? Unfortunately do not own a 4x4
