I spent the weekend with Lulu H and Lize A at Ntafuf. I was determined to catch something that would test the little 500 that Willie kindly gave me as a test reel, so I spent many hours on the river or at the jetty. I caught many juvenile stumpies, a few very slimy members of the kingfish family (not sure of the name - they have a mouth that projects outward), a baby cob, a 21cm spotted grunter and so many thornfish, I was dubbed Queen of Thorns. The big moment came off the jetty - I was smashed and the fish took off. My little 4ft pencil thin rod was bent and the fish was taking line. Lulu was yelling instructions as we had 4 other rods in the water and 2 boats moored. I tightened the drag slightly and that little reel just hunched its shoulders and passed the test with flying colours. I am so impressed with the drag - not a hitch or catch as the fish took line. The fight lasted about 10 minutes and Lu jumped onto one of the moored boats with a net. Fox Rippa 500 1 - 33cm kingfish 0 (clap)
Willie, I can only highly recommend this little beauty for anyone who wants some ultra light tackle fun. I can't wait to test it against something bigger now.
Please could someone id this kingfish - thoughts were either a juvenile GT or a greenspot?
