Guys and gals this is not only a fishing report but also a trip report. I hope you enjoy reading about and seeing some of the most beautiful places in Mozambique and that one day you all head up there to see for yourself.
After an absence of 2 years in the Bazaruto archepilego area we were on our way with our customary stop over at the Honey pot just before Xai-Xai. We got through the borders with no hassles and only I was stopped once by the police for speeding on the way up. After a smooth and pretty much hassle free drive we arrived at our destination of Vila do Paraiso in Vilanculos to be greeted by management and staff and fresh scented towels for us to freshen up :shk . The staff made short work of our baggage and all our food stuffs and took it all into our villa . The view we were greeted by from our villa was nothing short of insane and we were to enjoy it for the next 6 days. Our butler and cook introduced himself and at this stage the ladies thought "now we are on holiday".
My goals fishing wise for this trip was to catch as many of the kingfish species and to enjoy some incredible spinning and to land the usual suspects of BIG game fish :wahoo: :dor: :yft: that swim these waters amongst the monster bait balls.
1. Our view from the villa
2. Our butler and cook (whom the ladies wanted to bring back to South Africa)

After rigging up I thought I would quickly drop the boat in the water and head out to do some light tackle spinning on the northern point of Magaruque island. The lodge arranged a gilly/skipper for us which I must say, if its your first time in this area its a great idea to have him onboard as at low tide this area is super tricky and dangerous if you don't know the channels.
When we arrived at the point I realized how important it was to have the gilly/skipper on board as the reef we were to fish on came out a good 100-150m off the island and at full high is under water and invisible. We positioned the boat on the outside with the gilly/skipper at the wheel watching the swell and waves as we proceeded throwing spoons and small poppers. To watch GT's all be it small models 3-8kg chase and smash the poppers on the surface was a first for me and definitely something I would like to do more of.
We got 3 hookups but only managed to land one GT which my 4 year old son had the pleasure of doing battle with. Great father son moment for me.
The next few days we decided to do some island trips with the family and if we could get out to do some fishing we would. The beaches we spent the next few days lazying about doing some snorkeling are simply breath taking............highly recommended
1. MY son with his first ever GT (still to receive this picture, will post ASAP)
2. Magaruque island
3. Tourist making there way across via a dhow

Some great video thanks, now the next 2 months are going to drag out even more

The day we spent on Benguera island we had a window to go out to the deep blue and through the gates we went between Benguera island and Bazauruto affectionally known as king fish alley. What awaited us was pretty disappointing as all the birds and bait balls were totally a miss and the area was dead with no life. We managed to pick up a couta which young Matthew brought on board and then on the way back I found a great showing on the sonar (picture posted earlier in this thread) and stopped and quickly dropped a jig and landed my first Big Eye Kingie :yipee: . We quickly reeled in all the trolling gear and had four guys jigging at a time we had a great little spinning/jigging session with lots of on offs and landing a few new species like green job fish and tomato rockod. I was reefed once then bitten off and as quick as I put wire on was as quick as the fish went off the bite.
1. New species for me Big Eye Kingie
2. & 3 Benguera island scenery

Xmas day I was given the green light to go fishing and I was super amped only to be left disappointed, the sea had no bird life and bait balls. We eventually came across some birds with Tuna working the bait ball but for 2 hours we could not get them to take anything from spoons, rapalas, conas, kitchen sink nada swr <: Later in the day we found all the big charter guys working in 12meters of water :cnfzd things were starting to make sense now. We decided to go a little deeper and not long after we got our 1st and only hook up on a cona. A black Marlin gave as a great show before he proceeded to take a good 400m of line :shk . We cleared cleared lines and 5 minutes in I was already burning up, these things are strong man. A few minutes later slack line, the mono had parted and my awesome birthday present was not to be completed in style.   worst of it was it took on the reel that I forgot to respool as that line was old and of inferior quality......more school fees.
We headed back to the lodge to be told that they had arranged a surprise for the youngsters at the beach pool. What a great touch by management. Santa came in on a jetski to hand a few gifts to the kids :win:
1. Getting my ass handed to me by the Marlin
2. & 3 Father Xmas making an appearance in Vilanculos

The next day we unfortunately had to leave this Oasis of a resort were we spent 6 fabulous days, as we had booked further down the coast to Morrungulo at Bonito Bay. On arrival here things were not as rosy and we had a few issues which I won't go into detail as the management and owner eventually rectified the next day to make sure we were happy. Peterblace had also made his way up from Maputo to join us for the next few days.
The first eveing we did manage a little spinning session and I landed my first kingie from the side and a new species again.
The following 2 days we managed 2 trips to the deep only to find the same disappointment as we had in Vilanculos, very little bird life and bait balls and the game fish were AWOl. Again we found all the boats fishing in shallow 12-15m looking for couta which were there but I did not come all this way to fish on the drift with couta traces. swr <: duh
The one afternoon on a visit to Sylvia's Shoal we did come across some serious bait balls that were being demolished by a whale shark and many a devil ray and a huge school of kingies which we had enormous fun with for over 2 hours landing 20-25 kingies, not monsters by any many but hell we had a blast. Again here we landed another 3 new species of king fish.
1. Brassy ling fish caught spinning on the beach
2. Blue fin king fish
3. Green spotted king fish
And we actually forgot to take a pic of the yellow spotted kingy ...eish duh

Nice one Paulo, enjoying this immensely. How was the towing all the way up there?
-
Must say our morale was down concerning the fishing as we were in an area with incredible structure and drop offs but the game fish were missing with only couta a few snoek and one Wahoo being taken. We had found some showings on 2 of the shallower reefs were we just could not get bites we would try for live bait and the live bait would get bitten off, we would jig and loose jigs on the way down but no interest on the way up. Man we were absolutely finished and confused with no answer and we took a few days off just chilling with the family by the pool side partaking in some R&R and 2M.
Peterblace managed to get a few great dives in and on one of his dives they had gone to the one reef were we had found very good showings. He came back super excited saying that the fish are there as we had seen on the sonar from, many species of kingies with some big Geets in the mix, baracuda, couta and potato bass.
So we put some thought into this and we started rigging again and that afternoon we headed out at about 4pm with the sea on its head and some rain but hell we were now excited about fishing again and nothing was going to stop us, we put the clears up and off we went with only the jigging gear.
We got to spot X and the showing was thick, we went down and nothing 15min in we decided to change to 100g jigs, straight away we start getting bites but we can't hook up, 5-6 bites in and not one hook-up, frustration and confusion setting in. I lock my drag and on the next bite I hit the fish hard on every pump of the rod and I eventually land a small Geet.
So I tell the rest of the guys to hit the fish hard and we eventually start landing some fish, green job fish and tomato rockods and a rainbow runners as a new species. In between the mayhem we getting bitten off and reefed and there fish swimming all around the boat absolute pandemonium with some proper viskoors. We put the medium 50lb set ups away and we pull out the big gun stella's and Gorilla 20 but we cannot buy a bite for the love of money with these setups...............aargh more confusuion :unhap swr <: .
We put the heavy stuff away and immediately we hooking up on the 50lb tackle but again reefed/RENAMO'ed and humble by these beasts on every half decent fish we hook. 6.30pm we had back to the beach with big grins on our faces although we never landed any big fish, none of us had ever experienced a session like that, it was UNBELIEVABLE.
We had lost 7-10 jigs and spoons in a session of less than 2 hours, this is the fishing I enjoy, it would just be great to land some of the bigger fish in between the mayhem.
HOW ARE WE GOING TO LAND THESE BIGGER FISH?????????????????????????????
That evening we spent a lot of time preparing jigs and spoons, spoons with wire, drop shot with wire, jigs with wire bite traces as we prepared to do another afternoon session the next day.
The next afternoon the sea was even bigger with 3-3.5 meter swells but it was not stopping us, we wanted to get back to that action. We got there and the action again was fast and fierce and again we did not manage to land any big fish as they would not take on our heavy tackle and we got properly beat up again on the 50lb stuff.
My question to you seasoned jiggers. Why were we unable to get bites on the 80 and 100lb setups even when using the exact same jigs and spoons???
Is it the heavier rods that cannot produce the same action as the lighter gear???
Is the diameter of the line too visible???
The water was very clean and we were fishing shallow between 22m-27m
Please help we want to go back for revenge better prepared
In the video Peterblace posted is the action of just the one 2 hour session.......... simply insane stuff and with all the bust ups we loved it
-
Great report bud, thanks for sharing. Dont have an answer as to why heavy rigs di not account for fish, my guess would be action or visible leader line??
-
That evening we enjoyed some crays on the coals.
And like that our fishing was done for the trip as the last day we made a day trip to Pomene as we had always wanted to see it.
We visited the south bank were the Barra Lodge is and I must say that none of the lodges on the south bank are ideally situated on the ocean but rather on the lagoon which is not a pretty site at low tide. :-(
However the point were the old Pomene Hotel is situated is a stunning area and setting if someone out there as $15million US to invest, build a lodge here. :hehe: We spent a great day snorkelling and spinning from the ledge were we spotted dolphins, birds smashing bait balls and many a turtle even a sight that I will remember and cherish, while spinning I was catching silkies near the gap and 2 GT's 25-30kg came cruising past on their merry way not 5-7meters away, what a sight :shk and into the gap they disappeared obviously feeding on those silkies.
1. Small crays :crzy
2. .3 Gap at Pomene before and after high tide we spent the day snorkeling as the tide came in
Hope you guys enjoyed sharing in our trip.
The roads up north are great but with the current exchange rate, petrol is your biggest expense at almost R19 per litre. In Vilanculos you can just about buy anything and in Morrungulo you have to drive to Massinga 16kms away to buy petrol, groceries, drinks etc.
Will we go back to these places............... Vilanculos and Vila do Paraiso gets a hell yeah and Morrungulo will only see us back as a fishing group and not a family group, for me its not got that wow factor.
If you need any info of the areas, give me a shout
-
Nice one Paulo, enjoying this immensely. How was the towing all the way up there?
No hassle at all the roads are great only the 15km sand road to Morrungulo is corrugated so slow going if you don't want your trailer to break. w;k

Lekker report Paulo, thanks Boet. It looks stunning. It's quite obvious why you did'nt catch that much boet........ you were'nt on a YELD :crzy :hehe: :rotfl :hyst: Seriously it looks amazing and I hope you guys had a brilliant time (clap) :rck"
-
:rotfl Pete you might just be right  but I would of paid to see you boys out there with us on those late afternoon jigging sessions you would of looked like wet rag dolls on your pretty Yelds :crzy
-
thanks for the report bru...we have had a awesome time with the Costas
lets start planning '14!! it's getting late hein!
I have to say that I struggle woth the heavy outfit (jigstar JSR350 with gorilla 12c)...I know it's best suiteed for heavy jigs but how come I'm not able to bring the line out of the reel on freespool with a 100gr jig
line just don't go out unless you help it...then with +250gr jigs it's easy peasy
is that caused by braid width and weight?
on the light setups it was easy to see how with 100gr jig my line (30lb)was way faster then prego's (50lb)

I think we must start another thread in the jigging section asking the seasoned pro's for advice so we can go back soon and have revenge :hnthnt:

Thanks guys
@Fishaholic 5km/l you say still beats my 4km/L  but ya its your biggest expense on a trip like this.

What an awesome report, well written and a very cool video clip, respect to Pedro and Paulo! :+ cred:

I can feel your frustration, but your assessment is 100% correct, each rod has a recommended jig weight rating and with the heavier rods they usually need jigs from 240g-400g to load the rod blank correctly to generate the right action on the retrieve. When you under-load the heavier rods (say with a 100g jig) you cannot get the right action and get fewer strikes. Also the heavier braid sinks slower with the smaller jigs, and the heavier mono leaders are usually more visibile expecially in clean shallow water. A good option if you want to even the score on these heavy hitter fish in shallow water is to down-scale your leader to 80lb or 100lb fluoro and go to a short, wide flutter-style jig in a heavier weight (200g+) and you should come right.

Pedro you are quite correct, the 100g jigs are way below the minimum jig weight rating for the JSR350, the light jigs are too light to pull the braid out on the drop, you will need a minimum 200g jig for that to work properly. I found the JSR 350 optimum jig weight to be 300g, but that is not suited to such shallow jigging, you need 50m+ for that type of jigging. As mentioned in the previous post you can also try 200g+ jigs in the shorter wider style. Hope this helps!

Thanks for an awesome report boys... lekker narrative, pics and a video!!! :+ cred: to both of you!!

thanks for the feedback...
we did notice that...on +200gr jigs it was awesome...and I did had hookups but only on bottoms...for 3 occasions I had tiny bottoms going for the 300gr speed jig...jig was 4x the size of the fish
I also had a bite off going down on a 300gr jig...straight on the braid
-
Thanks guys appreciate the kind words.
Bwana thanks for the info. After the 2nd session we did down scale on the leaders and tied 80lb flouro carbon on, yet we still had no joy.
After that session I had put the stella's on the lighter rods even at the risk of breaking them just to try tame those beast but I never managed to get out of bed to make the early morning session to test the rod theory on the last day

Looks like you guys had fun - thanks for sharing
-
Great report Prego! Always awesome to read about a trip into Moz! tough luck on the jigging but sometimes it just happens like that! Hopefully next time it all goes your way and you have :tite
-
Thank you Werries, Chigger and Andrew yeah hopefully we will have a chance soon to turn the tables w;k
-
Gents , fantastic report and pics!!It must have been awesome catching those kingies :fshn:
I am busy prepping like mad for Inhassoro in April , were you using wire assist hooks on the jigs and a length of wire above?
-
Thanks Shaun, we used no5 american wire for the assist hook and yet we still got bite offs :cnfzd :unhap
As for wire above the jigs and drop shot heads it did not work as the water was just too clean and we never got bites so we only used flouro carbon there.
