It all started with a Pm from Shaun inviting me to join him and Mark(Bwana) for a mini fishing social at Shelly beach. I grabbed this opportunity with excitement and would latter found out that this would turn into an epic trip of a lifetime.
This is what greeted me the following morning at Shelly beach ski boat club (see pic)
I was greeted at about 05h00 with a hub of excitement as the charter boys where getting there rigs shorted with engines being warmed up and fishermen getting the gear sorted. Scouse African was all ready to go and stood proud waiting for one of those huge tractors to hitch here and tow here to the waters edge.
The launch through the surf was a breeze for Shaun and only once past the backline did he mention that his hand where shaking and I'm sure most skipper that surf launch share the same feeling.
So a course was plotted North and a colourline was found just off the backline (see pic)

Then it was Mark's turn and let me tell you this guys has heeps of knowledge and talent. While sharing some of his secrets his showed us what lures he used and how he sets a Darodo spread
Mark show us some of his secrets

After what seemed a lifetime (about 45 min) all hell broke loose on the boat with the shotgun going off and reel screaming. The guys then shouted to me and said I will take this one and with adrenalin surging I took the rod and could feel that there was something big on the end of the line. Thanks to Marks coaching and support I landed the first Dorado on Scouse African and Mark you are a machine.
The first Dorrie on the boat (thanks for that Shaun)

After a couple of runs up and down the coast we decided it was time to go deep for some jigging. As I have never jigged in my life Mark once again showed us how to attache a jigging lure and also show us how to do "PR"knot. Just let me say on land most of us would find this knot a hand full but Mark just whip his bobin and in a flash the knot was made.

With the current being very fast and jigging for about an hour with no luck we then decided to go chum for tuna Bawana style.
Mark showing us step for step how you chum for tuna.

We did not have to wait long and the first reel screamed as it someone payed it to scream and then the revving and groaning began.
Shaun took this one and you can see the bend in his rod and pressure in his face while Mark close by re-assuring him.

With and exhausted skipper and excitement in the air Shaun managed to boat the bus of a tuna
(http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/b592/isivuba/Shellybeach2013591_zpsc7791597.jpg)
and the circle hook was place just were they where intended to be right in the corner of the mouth.
Then the fun never stopped with mussels aching and myself and Shaun being taxed twice I manged to land this beaut
(http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/b592/isivuba/Shellybeach2013593_zps9d07a53b.jpg)
Two very happy anglers

Then is was Marks turn and what impressed me about this guys is he said "boys we have enough fish lets through this one back" and with out even thinking this fish was set free to fight another day. Huge respect for Mark for doing this.

Mark hooking into a "jonny"on such light tackle and boy this set up is freaking strong.

Well done boys, nice report. I hear there are some size tuna coming out at Protea banks.

What can i say that hasnt been said already...
Mark, you're a machine china. Your insistence that Mike and I pick up the screaming rods was extremely generous, but not to be repeated. Thanks to you both Mike and I hit PB's and we also landed the first dorrie on Scouse. Your chumming tutorial was spot on and no secrets held back, having the practical demo was invaluable to us both. Watching that slack line disappear and hearing that reel scream off is priceless. The lunch was top class as well...
Mike, awesome to finally have you on board boet!! The vibe on deck was awesome and i almost couldnt believe how time flew. You fought your fish like a champ and i think the one that got away may have been a tad bigger.
As for the launch, adrenalin always pumps... happy to have a healthy respect for the sea.
Eish, that jigging was hard work but seeing Mark go tight a couple times was encouraging and definately something i want to pursue more.
Discussions have already started about a Richards Bay trip to try land the first Marlin on Scouse...
Thanks again for an awesome day chaps!!! Good to have a few more PB's registered on Scouse, long may the good mojo continue.
-
Mike, awesome report mate, you have a way with words! Thanks to Shaun and yourself for a lekker day's fishing, I must say the whole day was a great experience and good to share with fellow UA'ers! Shaun your boat is awesome and definitely has some "mojo" as you mentioned. Glad you guys got some nice tuna and learnt to chum first hand.
I'm definitely keen for a Richards Bay session to get into some billies, they are there for sure!
:uarocks

Great report Mike, your boat looks awesome Shaun, and Bwana seems I'll have to fish with you some or other time. Congratulations!
Shaun just one observation, your boat looks very well fitted and equipped, everything that opens and closes, but I don't notice any electric reels. You should look into them quite popular in the US.

Well done guys great fish (clap)
