We launched this morning with the Tackle Box from Shelly Beach. With the weather and wind looking pretty hectic I was worried that we would be in for a rubbish day. Before we launched Brendan asked if we would mind hosting Lisa who is doing her thesis on the catch to tax ratio by sharks off protea. Of course we were happy to have her a long for the day. After a slow run out to the reef we popped to halcos out the back. Before we had even sat down again the first reel screamed off :shk I let my mate take this fish and he landed a YFT of about 4kg. We started letting the lures out again and bang we were vas again :shk the fish were coming thick and fast! We both landed a couple of fish around the 4-5kg mark and each landed a better fish around 8-9kg. I had a couple of chases on my LGF custom popper but didn't hook up :-( our skipper was also throwing a Williamson popper that he hooked up on but dropped the fish in the confusion.
Part of Lisa's research was trying to film fish being taxed. Luckily we didn't lose too many fish to the sharks, I think us GP okes pull harder than the KZN boys :creep: :creep: :creep: hopefully some of Lisa's footage will be sent to me including one tuna that swam into the camera almost knocking it off the pole :shk
While fighting a fish we had a small incident. Our skipper put in a cast with his popper and it seems that the braid wrapped around the eye and yanked the popper back into my arm duh ended up with a treble lodged deep in my forearm. Despite trying our best we couldn't remove it on the boat :-( we couldn't cut through the split ring or hooks. Dam this good quality tackle! <: Ended up strapping the popper to my arm and running back in. Bouncing over waves and swells is veeeeery k*K with a treble in your arm! Ended up in the local doc's surgery and had it removed under anaesthetic apparently it had hooked around my tendon :cnfzd Im pretty sure that an 80kg homo sapien is our skippers best catch on popper :hehe:
All credit to the guys from tackle box who not only gave us a great day out but offered to cover all my medical bills for the removal of the hook and only charged half price for the day because we only spent 3 hours out :happ:

Ya not feeling too bad at the moment but it was a BIG reminder to ALWAYS wear glasses when hooks are flying around. A hook in the arm hurts but isn't life changing

That was a bad hook Brad, glad you are OK!
-
:shk ... yikes Brad , that looked plenty eina, glad it got sorted with no damage to the nerves and tendon . :-)
-
:shk Just hate when a hook like that cuts a fishing trip short, especially when the fish are eating! Glad you guys got fish prior and a great gesture by the crew with the payments, just happy that it wasn't "life-changing" but will make for a good story, bet it already has !
Hope the rest of your holiday is much much better HP!

Ouch. Hope it heels soon. Enter skipper for angler of the month there is a UA witness. :hyst: . Have had a treble buried in my foot and had to drive the boat 6kms back through surf and beach. Had to cut it out using knife on my leather man. So I feel your pain.

HD you are such a royal, but I know it to be true :udman:
-
Glad you are OK - and more importantly as you mentioned - as lesson for all to take from this - re- wearing glasses when popping / jigging..............
-
Hope you didn't get any blood on that UA shirt (bat
How long you down there for HP, maybe we can make up for lost time? I carry mini bolt cutters on the boat so you should hold out for a whole session.
Glad to hear you're ok bud, could have been a lot worse...
-
the best part is he was still wearing his Ultimate Jersey, and a smile.
-
Wiskers Brad!
Not the type of UA shirt promotion we want to see!!
Glad you are ok and hopefully no issues with the tendon.
-
Eesh that must have been sore.......but look on the bright side, you caught some fish and have a proper funny fishing story to tell at the next UA bash :hehe: :hyst:

Wear Glasses no matter what fishing you do, I once took one to the right temple, just beside the eye while Carp Fishing. Good thing I need glasses to see, so I always have mine on... hope the injury does not keep you away from fishing too much HP. Get well soon.
-
Eish Brad! I know the feeling. Luckily mine was a 6/o removed by male nurse at Lusikisiki Hospital :resp:
Good luck! Get Better and Tight lines for the rest of your holidays. :fshn:
-
:shk Ouch! I am glad you are going to be OK. Shirts etc can be replaced but other body parts are difficult to grow back. Thumbs up to the charter company for paying the bills. (clap)
-
Sorry to hear about the incident Brad! Glad you're ok and nice to see you taking it in good spirits.
This will happen to anyone taking up on fishing.... sooner or later.... It's one of those things...

That must be a PB off Protea for sure :hehe:
Glad you ok Brad but its definitely a danger on the boat, sunnies are a must for sure and so too big bolt cutters. Maybe a good thing they did not have the big bolt cutters on board seeing as there was a tendon involved but it definitely helps in most cases as I experienced over Easter.
BTW I agree with Rory get that tetnis shot if you have not had one in the last year or 2.
-
Yup got a tetanus shot. Dam thing hurts more than where the popper got stuck. Luckily that popper had just come out the box
