Hi guys. Could anyone plz tell me if the Umtumvuna river flows slow enough to fish with a kickboat, and if so where the best place would be to launch (closer to the good spots)... and any helpfull hints regarding the area for some surf dropshot as well????
Thanx in advance!

kick boat should not be a problem, actually ideal so that you can fish close to the structure, overhanging trees etc...
Launch at the Old Pont, quick, easy and very nice and clean facilities. Just arrange your permit at the entrance when arriving.
I've only fished towards the mouth from the launch site, no motor boats allowed up river. Think you will be allowed to go up river in a kick boat but just check with the guys at reception when you get there.
Not a big river so you can cover the entire section from the launch site to the mouth easily. Lots of overhanging trees, steep rock faces etc.. some nice fishing spots all along the river.
During holidays the boats and jet ski's will make it difficult to fish, out of season very quiet and much better for fishing.
I've caught some bream and nice rock salmon there.

Thx for the quick reply Zetti! Good to see that Im not the only addict out there!!! I would also prefer heading further upstream... We'll be taking the kayak aswell, so I really hope it would be allowed further up... Have you fished the surf around Port Edward by any chance?

There are big Zambis in there

No problem bud. Just keep an eye on the tides if you decide to go up river (if its still allowed), you don't want to get caught up there at low tide and you can't get back, quite shallow up stream and very rocky.
If you planning on going over December it will be ideal if you can head up river to get away from the noise down stream.
Don't do much surf fishing so can't help you there sorry.

So the kayak might be a better bet? I'm fairly sure they're not too fond of fibreglass, and motion sickness is not a problem for me, so I won't be "chumming" too much... LOL
But thx dugongboy! I'll put my feet up and row the kickboat where I need to be... hehehe!

There are even bigger zambis in the big blue, doesn't stop the guys from fishing off their kayaks.

Any luck with the fishing in the river?

We went fishing from a boat on Thursday (or Friday). We only managed one river snapper caught on a prawn between 4 guys. Got off the river around midday.

Guys!
I know this post is old, but this past December Miloman and I went up the Umtamvuna in an inflatable, powered by an electric trolling motor. We launched from the Old Pont. What can I say? Majestic scenery, and amazing sounds. At one stage we the river was so flat that our eyes could not tell where the river ended and the reflection began. We saw (and heard) fish eagles, great herons, and found a monitor lizard (likkewaan) sunning himself on the rocky beach. With the Transkei on the left, and KZN on the right, it is truly a place to behold!
Unfortunately for us, the heavy rains over December had turned the river really brown, so we got no hits, even after having gone all the way up to the rapids. But what an experience!
On the way back our battery died, but we rowed the last bit. All in all an amazing day! Highly recommended! Also, your vehicle is safe (at least as safe as it can be) in the boat parking area at the Old Pont.
