Hi guys
Got this reel to match my Jigstar 120 jigging rod. With hind sight i should have got a 5000 but figured the 6000 was better with the line capacity, lower retreave. Anyway, still a good set up
Used it in Songa and the drag clicker got damaged/broke/not sure, but the drag sound disappeared. Took it into the retailer and got it fixed. Was working when i got it back. Used it at Latham this weekend. Caught some fish, not big by any means. Now the clicker has gone again. Cant fish without that sound :dunno:
Has anyone experienced this problem with the new Sustains?
What to do ....
Thanks in advance for all your comments and advice.

Here's some info .

Hmmm that makes me nervous I've just ordered a Sustain 10000 and 5000 for my Xmas present! Had a similar problem once with my Saragosa 8000, had it repaired in store and it was fine after that. Not good, considering the price of the Sustains....
-
I hear you Bwana. I've referred the problem back to the retailer, lets see. I am hoping that Reefs can assist also
The previous Sustain 5000 i have does not have this issue at all
-
Been online, seems like i am not the only one with this problem

I am also concerned. Bought the 5000 but have not yet opened the box.....

Herby... I'm assuming you're referring to the ratchet clicker? The clicking noise that is made when the spool runs in reverse when a fish is taking line?
Inside the spool is a little stiff metal magodie, that is held in place by a spring. (See pic). This metal jobbie makes contact with the Plastic ratchet that fits on the spool shaft, and a noise is made when the spool turns. So your problem should be fairly easy to fix?
The metal spring clicker has obviously bent to an extent that it isn't making contact with the ratchet. You just need to bend it until it does?
If the spring is broken, then it needs to be replaced.
I picked up a flaw with this reel in that the Black plastic Ratchet does not sit tight on the spool shaft - there is quite a bit of vertical bend/play in it. This might cause the metal clicker to become bent from time to time, but it is easily fixable I reckon, without having to send it in?

Reefs, thats the issue. The ratchet clicker. I will check when i get home ... will try "bopa" and get my laaitjie to charge down the road with my line :fshn: Thanks

Howzit Herb, I had the same thing happen on my sustain 10000 fg after a couple of serious couta runs. The clicker sound disappeared but the drag still functioned.
Upon inspection i found that it boils down to the cheap plastic that is used as the ratchet as per reefman's above pic. The ratchet on my 10000fg is a different white colour, and not the grey colour as the pic above. What happened is that the metal clicker actually melted a path through the white plastic and hence the sound disappeared. Look carefully at your ratchet an you'll see the path melted through the plastic
The design of this clicker is inferior to my sustain 8000fe, which used a metal ratchet. All the plastic used in the 10000fg makes the reel really light, but you pay a price with durability of the components.
If you can live without the sound, you still have a perfectly good reel that'll pull some serious fish.
-
Awesome, thanks dude. Going to check it out as soon as i get home. The drag still good thats for sure but jissy dunna if i want to live without that sweet sound of the ratchet ...
-
Ya the pics above are of the Sustain 5000, the larger models will be slightly different.
:+ cred: for your input Pierre!

Here are some pics.
The Sustain 5000fe and 6000fg. Can't help but feel the 5000 spool and reel body is much more robust. You can see the ratchet clicker on the 6000 to the right. Guess I should try tighten this in place and see if i can get it to work
-
I have exactly the same problem with my 10 000 fg, after only one trip, the little wire spring broke. Didn't realize it at first and then the clicker without the spring holding it back damaged the plastic ratchet as well. :dunno: Not happy, not the cheapest reel out there, broke after one trip.
-
i also have the same problem on my sustain 10 000fg. the second time i used it there was no sound on the ratchet.removed spool and saw the plastic ratchet thing has a couple pieces missing.
-
Just spoke to rapalasa, have to fax my proof of payment tomorrow then they can replace the parts. He said someone just recently also needed the same parts. But he doesn't know about it being a common problem. Surely it must be a manufacturing or desighn issue.
-
hi fishaholic
what is the price of the plastic ratchet?
thanks freddy
-
Still waiting for price, they will get back to me. I asked for the spring, diamond clicker (lost mine), and plastic gear. Will let you know.
-
thanks
this seems to be a problem on this range of reels.

I'm in the market for a new reel. Would you guys suggest the Saragosa SW 6000 or the Sustain FG 6000?
Is this the only issue on the FGs? I've heard bad reports about CI4 other than for light tackle fishing but really don't know if these are warranted.
-
I would do the new Saragosa SW range ... Seems like the issue with the FG range is recurring
-
I've had issues with my Sustain 5000FE, won't be buying another...

Eish Shaun, I sounds like you got a dud 5000fe. I couldn't be happier with mine. Even caught a saily on it. Infact, the 5000fe prompted me to buy the 10000fg, thinking that the sustain genetics would be carried through or improved upon.
To be fair, I have heard numerous good things about the fg series, prime being their lightness and incorporation of x-ship. But there is this issue with the clicker that needs sorting out.
Does anyone know of it being a problem in the smaller models too? It seems to be an issue with the 6000fg and up? In particular it seems to be the white plastic ratchet that causes the issue. I don't see the same white plastic being used in the 5000fg...
I agree with Herbmeister with regards to the new Saragosa SW, they seem to be available in most tackle shops in SA.

I've been using the Stradic FJ and Sustain 5000 FG models for some time now and have had zero issues with the Drag clicker. Maybe it's only with the larger models? :dunno:
-
Been using a Sustain 5000FG since January this year. I spin three mornings a week and really rate the reel.
Have replaced the roller clutch assembly once and the line roller bearing a couple of times.
I consider these replacement as fair wear and tear considering I get wet quite often and have filly submerged the reel a couple of times after having a few unplanned swims with rod and reel in hand. I service the reel about once every six weeks and strip it completely if it goes for a swim.
Regarding the ratchet cannot comment as in most of my spinning reels I have removed the clicker as it really adds no value to the mechanics of the reel aside from making a noise when the fish run. I had never really considered this important but really enjoy the sound of braid being peeled off the spool and racing through the eyes - That why we fish!
-
Lucky Hook thanks for the information. I was getting worried as I bought a 5000FG recently. Must admit it is still in the box though.

I had the same problem with my Sustain 5000FE, the spring broke - but I fortunately got an extra spool from a buddy who had his (same) reel stolen - so now I have three spools and two springs!
