So it has been a while since I posted a fishing report... So to Start I would like to introduce you to NEREUS (Meaning -NEREUS was the old man of the sea, and the god of the sea's rich bounty of fish) the newest member of our Fleet... He is a 19ft Yeld cat Walk around with 2 x 90 Evinrude etecs to push him along... so it is after weeks of prepwork getting him ready to go for a his Samsa inspection. I Finally managed to pick up my LGSC from samsa last week which worked out quiet well... with some support from Neptune the weather was looking good for the weekend, just in time to take Nereus for his first sea trial and put him through the paces. So after arranging with one of my mates at the Ski boat club we agreed to take him for a run down to Aliwal and back and pop a couple of lines in the water while on our way :hnthnt: So we meet up at 5:30 and where at the Club for 6:00 and started loading the all the Rods and tackle. And after sorting out a couple of small issues like flat battery we were ready to undergo his maiden voyage... so we hitched up the tractor and headed for the beach. Ballie our Tractor Driver and duty offices reversed her up to the water and dropped him just short of the shore break where I have to say I though we would battle to turn him but with just myself and Daniel we managed with very little water and effort to turn him around and push him in.. We dropped the motors and where off... the launch was an interesting one with a couple of nasty curlers and double stacks coming through but we managed to make a couple of tight turns and get out safely.. I have to say I was very surprised at how those 90's made him hope on to the plain... any way once on the back line i decided to give him a good run and flattened the spoons and was flying along at over 60kph with no problems.. After a little testing we turned and headed south to Aliwal... running in the mid RPM we where comfortably able to maintain a comfortable 40kph speed down to Umgaba where we decided to drop lines and troll the rest of the way... as i have not loaded all my makes as yet i just worked the ledges and drop offs and was not long before we had a couple of bonnies on the line.. But sadly that was all we managed to find... as we worked out way out the the 200m line the weather was getting a little wet so we decided to pull lines and run back to Warners... the run took up about 20min to the back line. As we awaited our turn to beach I check the fuel and was surprised that we had only used a tank per motor. . In any case we waited our turn lined up and went for the beach...

Good to see you back on the big blue Richard and the boat looks like a winner (clap) . Could you please let me know how far up Warner beach is from Umkomass river mouth cause it looks like a good place to launch for Aliwal.
-
Thanks Mike He is a beast of a boat plenty power and skill..
Warners is about a 20km run from Umkomaas on the back road! launch is not to bad but can get a little scary at times once you are in the water there is a nice hole you can sit in and wait for your break.. there is a bit of room to run as well.. good idea to come and watch the boys launch before trying it as there are a couple of bricks and banks that you need to watch out for.. ask me I learnt the hard way... lol

So the weekend has gone and I can honestly say I was happy to have an ST(d) on board :hehe: for my Saturday :billf: trip... The day started at 5:00am with ST(d) meeting me at Warner Beach Ski Boat Club for a days :billf: fishing as he was helping me out as a guilly.. and I must say that when I arrived at the club with boat in tow at 5:15am, St(d) was already there waiting, ready and willing to go! The sea conditions were good with a small swell and a light NE breeze. Myself and ST(st), who will now be known as Q here forthwith... (as ST(d) takes to long to type) :crzy started prepping the boat for launch, were doing so in a light drizzle but that was not going to deter us as my charter arrived for his trip - Stefan had come all the way from Germany to try his luck for a :billf: off the South African coast.
After he arrived he asked the question... where is the Marina? To which Q pointed to the beach and said over there!
In any case Stefan was non the less fascinated by the way in which we go to sea.. as he thought we where crazy  but after he saw a couple of the other boats run the gauntlet, he became excited to give it a go! So after warming the motors we hooked up to the tractor and headed to the beach...with little effort, myself and Q turned Nereus and climbed aboard. Strangely we had to punch a couple of double stack waves but made it out to the back line with little or no real drama. After we we made it to the back line I picked a mark on the horizon and despite the constant rain, we ran out to the 150m line where we dropped lines and started working the areas for some :billf: . Besides the rain, the water was clean and warm and it was not long before we had found a gap in the rain and some brighter areas which we worked up and down for a couple of hours - working from the 400m marks to the 700m marks. Sadly we did not see any :billf: but we did try chase some birds, which we could see were eyeing out Bonnies jumping, but even with Q and Stefan throwing spoons and poppers at them they where just not interested...we started to make our way back to the deep side of Aliwal before we changed tactics and went on to some lighter tackle to try and target some smaller Tuna before heading back to the beach. Sadly there seemed to be a complete lack of fish around. We worked the waters up to Umgaba where we upped lines and ran back to Warners to beach at 14:45, having covered 150km we only used 5 tanks of fuel which was most impressive, considering we were running between 15 and 20 kmph while trawling and 40 to 50 kmph when running distance ... although we didn't catch anything, we had a good day on the water seeing Dolphins, breaching Whales, Flying Fish and Bonnies. I also introduced a GERMAN to a couple of CRAZY SOUTH AFRICAN fishermen...but at the end of the day he had a great time and enjoyed the experience.. AS for our Sunday trip we ended up cancelling it as we arrived at Durban Ski Boat Club to meet a stiff NE wind which one could see would have made fishing very uncomfortable, so instead we decided to forget the fishing and go have a nice breakfast instead..all i have left to say is a a huge thank you to Q aka ST(d) for coming along to help on the trip! You wash the boat well and are a great help when launching :rck" and to my client Stefan ... Thank you for the fascinating stories of your fishing trips around the world and I look forward to seeing you next year when you come again so we can get you that :billf: !!!!
-
Nice report Richard pity the fish did not play the game :-(
Hope that Q from Qarletonville did not pass any wild ideas on yo you for Nreus :-) Only joking ST(d)
Look forward to more reports

Thanks Again for taking me with you Richard. :+ cred: to you again.
Just one thing I have to add, Richard is a very bad waitress in the morning when he needs to bring coffe to the Gilly, But when I took my shirt off that afternoon to washed the boat, man nobody could stop him from getting the    to me, not sure if it was my topless boat washing of the cold  that was encouraging him.
:hehe: :rotfl :hyst: :hyst: :rotfl :hehe:
-
Kept bringing the beers to keep you well hydrated :frid while washing the boat if you passed out from dehydration you would not have finished washing the boat :dunno:

So it has been a weekend of fair weather. Sea conditions where good on Saturday for a trip that was booked for some Clients from JHB. we Meet at Warnerdoon ski boat club at 5:30am and by 6:00am we where on the back line.
I had decided that we where going to run Down to Aliwal shoal to try out luck for some Dorries and Some Tuna.. it was not long after setting our Spread that we had 3 lines away.. all 3 Dorado 2 queens about 6 KG and a nice bull which i will guess was about 15kg Sadly though we only managed to boat the 1 queen as we lost the other next to the boat.. As for the Bull he gave us a good run for about 15min on some light tackle before a final jump and coming off not 20m from the boat.. So we reset the spread and worked the shallows to find a couple of small Yellow Fin of about 4 -6kg. this all before we even got to the shoal.. after doing a couple of laps around the pencil buoy the guys decided they wanted to call it a day as they had been out till 2:00am the night before and where all feeling a little :cnfzd . in any case we took a slow troll back to the beach for an early day.. however after hitting the beach they decided they needed a couple of reg markers so we had a couple of Frosty  while we filleted fish..
All in all a great day however short on the water..
-
Well don Richard, what you get the Dorries on?
-
We hooked 1 dorrie on a rappie the other 2 on 6' Kona's, Both YFT where on Rappies..

Sorry it has take a couple of days to get this report up but have had some drama with the break in and almost setting the car alight... but that is a story for another time.
On Saturday myself Brandon from Go fish and Nick from NPB all met at Durban ski boat club for about 4:00 am to get prepaired for the day with the Breakfast stack and the Drive teams. with the Breakfast stack being the smaller team they all jumped on board Nereus.. we were all on the water by 4:30 and heading out the the ships of Umhlanga. by 5:00am we had set our spread and began to work around the ship.. the water was not great and around 22deg water colour was not good either.. but we persisted.. working our way north out to Balito and then out to the 100m and 150m line respectivly.
In any case after a could of hours with out any action Wes Brandon and my self decided to play a nice little prank on Darren and his team.. with tehm sitting up front we quietly pulled in one of the lines and rigged it to a Pick n Pay packet which we then let over board. i have to say once it had opened in the water it took off like a rocket. screaming away.. first to the plate was Mac who after a 10min fight was exhausted so Darren took over and had ago.. the packet must have taken some 400m of line off the real. but after a couple of substitutions it was Darren that finally landed the packet. Which we have on Video and will post the link soon as i get in from brandon.. saidly for us the day was very unproductive with very few fish coming out in general back at the club however it seamed to be the same as I only saw and heard of a couple of fish coming out..
As for the drive team however they did manage to hook and land 1 dorrado making them the winners for the day! they also had some fun with Andre bloem and a new galvanised bucket.. check out this Vid at http://www.ecr.co.za/post/video-andre-pranked-at-sea/ (http://www.ecr.co.za/post/video-andre-pranked-at-sea/)
I will post some pics of Darren fighting his packet later today and let you know soonest the Video is up!
-
:rotfl naughty bastids!
-
HAHAHA we would not hold back the laughter.. was brilliant seeing Darren's face when the penny dropped!! :rotfl :hyst:
-
Well done great prank.
-
Have to say though it was only when we got back to DSBC that Darren informed us that his is a fishing jinx.. said his oldest brother will not take him fishing cause every time he does he catches nothing.. so I suggested we need to do some kind of cleansing ritual next time.. so we are taking suggestions on how to remove the curse from Darren.. so far we have bite the head off a bait fishing before launching( thanks ST and Guppie for this one)
then we have decided that he wear the blood of the bait fish as war paint.
Am open to any other ideas as well?
-
Tell him to check out www.ultimateangling.co.za (http://www.ultimateangling.co.za) - then put on a UA shirt and give it another go.
-
AHAHAHA Not a bad idea!

Come on Richard, I know you have been out and caught some nice fish and a nice Hoo, so please post some frigging reports
-
Ja Richard, you have a responsibility. w;k

So I know it has been a while since my last post... (Feel like I am attending a TA meeting LOL) but in any case.
So the past month or so we have had some tough fishing. I have been launching at either Warnerbeach and fishing the shoal or Durban Ski boat club. my last 2 trips have yielded some nice size fish. the First was a mid week trip I booked with Nick and Gunter. we launched out of Durban ski boat club. weather was find with a small swell and slight cloud cover. We worked our way north along the 100m line up to Tongaat. trip was pretty quiet until we turned back towards Umhlanga.. where our one rigger clip snapped and the reel started to screeeeam away.. Gunter was first up and after a bit of coaching found his rhythm.. and was not long before we had a nice 15-20kg Wahoo on board... after resetting the spread we worked our way back to mid reef to try for some bottom fishing.. there was loads of action on the bottom but unfortunately nothing big was around. so we called it a day and headed back to Durban Ski boat club... them my trip from this weekend was with Basil from Musina who was down in Winkelspruit on Holiday with the family. with some good weather forecasts we decided to launch from Warner beach and go fishing on Aliwal. so with my guilly Daniel in tow we met at the ski boat club for 5:30. and where out on the water for 6:30 heading towards the shoal.. we dropped lines in the 30m mark of Umgababa and headed to the pencil buoys to look for Tuna the water was a nice clear blue and warm conditions where almost perfect for fishing but after a couple of trips around the buoys we worked our way to the deep side of the shoal and down to wards Scottsburg. We where not there long before we turned back and worked a nice current line which turned into a decent colour line which proved to work well as we had to nice Dorado pick ups.. but turned out to be long line releases.. but hey that happens some times..on making our way back to Umgababa in some clear water we finally had a good solid strike.. with the reel screaming away with what I though was a nice sized Tuna.. Basil got stuck straight in and was not long before we could see the number plate.. was a nice 10kg sized Bonnie which put up a good fight on some medium weighted tackle... after that we worked a couple of reefs in the shallows off Umgababa and Warnerbeach but with the NE wind picking up it was starting to get a little bumpy so we upped lines and headed for shore.. all in all not a bad couple of days out on the water..
What I can say is that the fishing has been tough and we have had to work long and hard to find fish.... will post some pics tonight for you guys!

So the weekend has passed and Nereus is now in Jhb so this is the last tale... but what a tale it was... On Saturday myself and Std launched from Durban ski boat club for my last trip on Nereus. We met my clients Kathryn, Gavin and Garth.. the weather forcast was good for the day with light winds forcast. As we where leaving the vetchies basin I noticed something floating in the water.so I tapped off and Std dived in to retrieve a gaff that was floating there so wd had our first catch of the day. Water was nice and warm at 27 deg.. as we made our way out passed number one the water condition where perfect.. we dropped lines and trolled out to the 100m line towards Umhlanga.. after working Round a couple of ship we finally got a run.. which turned out to be a very small dorado of about 3kg.. after a quick photo shoot we reset the line and made our way towards mid reef... was not long before the rigger clip snapped and screamed away.. as we looked back I saw that we had hooked a small black marlin of about 80kg... which was putting on quiet a show for us... so std cleared lines while Kathryn preped to fight her fish.. with std at the helm the marlin tuned for the boat.. I shouted at std to hit the throttels as I tried to take up the slack line.. after couple of seconds we had taken up the slack line and the fight was back on.. I quickly handed the rod to Kathryn and she quickly found her rhythm. . This was going to be a long fight as typically the Marlin would have taken on the smallest reel a torium 20 spooled with 30lb line...I any case Kathryn made short work of the fight and quickly retrieved over 400m of line as we where almost spooled...as the fish neared the boat I put on my gloves on and preped to leader and grab the fish.. with her still deep and next to the boat.. I managed to grab the leader line and started to lift her to the surface... and to my complete surprise I looked over to find that out fish was missing a bill!! In fact it was not even a marlin at all but rather a 20kg wahoo.. both Std and my self looked at each other in amazment as we could not believe that the wahoo had clearly eaten our black marlin.. I mean what other possible explanation could there be?? In anycase Kathryn was happy with her catch and wanted to release the hoo which we did manage to do rather successfully. . All in all a fascinating trip for my last trip on Nereus..and a huge thanks to Std for helping out for the day!
