I fished the roodekoppies bonanza. Launching is easy with slipway, facilities were very good where we were, with toilets camping and braais. Think I paid R100 for the entrance. Fishing was excellent. Carp barbel and bass

if you are referring to the dam near Brits in North West then it's Roodekopjes. I think some people call it Rooikoppies.

You can launch at the old Northern Transvaal grounds or Dennekruin, both have easy launch sites and ablution blocks etc. Dennekruin fees were R80 if I remember correctly, NTVL a bit more expensive I think.

If you want to camp I will suggest the NTVL grounds, Dennekruin is much smaller and it gets a little bit cramped there over weekends.

A 5kg bass came out at Roodekopjes a while back. I've caught a few 6lb+ kurper there, lovely dam with lots of structure etc...

Maybe we should make this a semi social/ fishing day  , those with boats can bring them and spend the day on the water , not sure how much bank angling can be done + boat space is the limiting factor... put some gazebos up at the launch site or close by for shade /braai-ing etc ... :dunno:  who would be interested in doing this ....??

Not a problem Mike light spinning rods and line is all you need, I have plenty of lures, hooks and plastics to help you out, small mepps spinners work well for  Kurper, small halco type lures are also ok for bass

we still need to pick a launch site though :krpr:
Title: Re: Rooikoppies/ Roodekopjes dam

As Dodger mentioned , Mike , i also dont have a huge amount of freshwater tackle so ive made do with my light estuary spinning reels and rods in the 6.6" to 8 ft range  , also using small jigheads and Mcarthy minnows + have an assortment of small rapalas from years ago for the bass , Kurper i'l try to get with the tried and tested earthworms and float, i think we should launch from the site that Visop mentioned as well ...... now lets see if i can get Reefz to join us for the day .... :hnthnt: , should be fun , my boat is good for 3 up with tackle(myself +2) and then its a bit crowded after that ... closer to the time we can make final plans and arrangements as where to meet up etc..

I found a map of the dam showing the location of the Ntvl fishing grounds and the Wtvl fishing grounds, is the Wtvl now Dennekruin.?

What is planned for the day a braai afterwards?

I still haven't found out anything about fishing licences?

:shk .... that sounds  pretty painful , and a long recovery time.

recovery is they reckon 6 weeks but I'm not holding my breath on that, it'l be a while until I go afloat as I want it completely healed before we go crashing around on the water. It's been on the cards to have it done for years but I keep putting it off. Next year I'll have the other one done.

Eish... not so cool 1
Lets hope we have a great day out...

Guys, what tackle must we carry ???

Im taking a 7ft and a spinning reel.... need to get some small lures and such...
Title: Re: Rooikoppies/ Roodekopjes dam
Post by: MIKE PIKE on January 10, 2013, 12:29:55 PM
Homie , this is what im using for tackle  my light estuary spinning reels and rods in the 6.6" to 8 ft range  , also using small jigheads and Mcarthy minnows + have an assortment of small rapalas and spinners from years ago for the bass , Kurper i'l try to get with the tried and tested earthworms and float
Title: Re: Rooikoppies/ Roodekopjes dam
Post by: Rykie on January 10, 2013, 12:32:54 PM
eish ops and recovery time not the best... i know a few people who have had knee ops they weren't out of action for too long

i have 3 bass rods and tackle so i think i am going to bring 2 of them
but the light spinning stuff you have should be fine..

lures it just depends on the colours and size you have.. im sure one or two of your surf rapala's will work

soft plastics, from experience, work wonders

earthworms and a float can land you Bass aswell so thats also an option but i wouldnt go there just with earthworms

however from myside looks like Mias is needed, all my rapala's are very well used and im short line

Guys,
My best mate, Rushay would like to join us if he can.

Mike, (isisvuba) if you've got space I'd really appreciate giving him a lift...(I'd prob join on your boat)

He's not a fisherman, so fishing space not compromised, just wants to tag along

Willing to be gillie/barman/ etc...

Will this be fine ?

Guys the bassing on artificials is very good there, so is the artlure for carp and barbel.
For carp nothing more than a nice sweet white dough, not too much scent....Tutti frutti is best in that dam.

You need karibas...don't go without them. I'm taking 4 boxes. THe kurper can clean you out in 1 hour

. Ok, boat done...new ancor done. rods and art lure done
bass rods and tackle done
tomorrow evening just the dough and bread.

oh btw guys if you can get maroek or voermol I usually make a nice voerplek 1st thing in the morning, then go art lure and bassing, When I return 2 hours later the fish are full up.

oh and if you only take these you will be fine.

Supercast mieliebom, tutti frutti dio, red banjo boldip and plain white dough.
all of this on a standard rietvlei on a plastic bom holder, quite a lot of rocks in the dam.
those of you that want a big barbel take a roepstok and pumpkin seed or some chicken liver

Mike, at this stage we are in.  Deone's wife is having an op on Thursday so we should know by this weekend how she is going to recover.  The boat must still run lotsa hours till run in and can do its first 30hr service. Better to do it before she goes down to the sea.

Is there a solid slipway?

What facilities are there, braai/picnic?

Are we taking wives and children or will you arrange girls?

I picked up a pair of 30hp Johnsons complete with controls circa 1993 models for an R5000.00 , we are starting the change of motors tomorrow, my expert mechanic and some lifters are arriving in the morning. The motor  seller also has a little blitzy and does a lot of ltb fishing, he has upgraded to 40hp Evinrudes.I will encourage him to join the site.

My expert mechanic by the way is an elderly Portugese fella who walks 7-10kms every day and is a qualified Evinrude Johnson mechanic if any one needs assistance, particularly on the older motors

You can launch at the old Northern Transvaal grounds or Dennekruin, both have easy launch sites and ablution blocks etc. Dennekruin fees were R80 , Adolf posted this somewhwere in the beginning of the thread , so im guessing this is where  we go .

Dodger your Blitzy going to be done  :dunno:

 :dunno: gonna try,

Having more axle gremlins, I'm having to have some plates made to fit the 45 dia axle onto the 70 wide spring, will get them Wednesday, so should have roadworthy and registration sorted by Thursday, then it is just the cof. Going for cat R at this time will upgrade to Cat C later

The hatches will be glassed in tomorrow and the motors connected and hopefully run, The motors each have an ignition switch and separate kill switch. The control box only has a position for the ignition switch, not a problem I will mount ignition and kill switches on the steering console.

The fuel hatch will only take one x 25 L yammie tank (see photo) with enough space to fit a normal 25L poly prop tank on it's side. Can you modify the suction pipe on the 25L poly prop tank to work like this? :dunno:

I can eventually move the fuel hatch rear bulkhead aft 50mm to fit 2 x yammie tanks but not by Saturday. Can you run 2 motors from 1 tank safely?
2 x the smaller Quicksilver tanks will fit, but nor at R1200 a pop :unhap

Battery I plan to use a single battery (102 a/h) for both motors, is that legal :dunno:
I will carry another 40 a/h as reserve
The steering linkage arm needs to be shortened, awaiting delivery of the motor to steering arm brackets plus emergency steering which should be Wednesday as well.

Boat name and number stikers are ordered so thats not a problem.

Carpets will be doubtfull for Friday so go bare foot as they say.

Gunwale rod mounts need fitting but that's not important at the moment

The rest of the safety gear I have it just needs remarking for the boats new registration

Right im still good for Sat 1st , got directions thanks to Google maps , so im leaving at 6 am , should be there at about 7:30 , will get directions to the Dennekruin launch site and facilities  , going with is 2 x light rods with some freshwater terminal tackle , lures ,soft plastics.. etc a float or two and i'll have to source some worms from somewhere to have a go at the kurper , spare fuel etc for spending time on the water , something to braai and something to braai in +charcoal and some refreshments of course . and thats it , plan to leave about 4 ish as its getting dark early  , so it will be a a day on the dam exploring , fishing or teacing worms how to swim , hold there breath under water for extended periods of time .. :hyst:  , doing a bt of spinning with artificials for fast asleep bass.. :hyst:  and generally relaxing at the dam  :Entrance/launching fee is apparently 80 to 100 ront.

Kurper are mainly targeted in the warmer months and is going to be tough to catch this time of the year, I suggest you make a feeding spot first thing in the morning and then go look for bass, when it heats up a little later try and target kurper on the feeding spot.

Good luck and enjoy... (OBS will come in handy early morning)

:crzy just ask in the fishing shop, it's a residue from one of the brewing processes, mix it in a bucket with some of the mielie bomb mutti and drop it in the dam, come back and fish the spot a few hours later

It is a cooler water temperature , so you need either  'noisy' agravaiting baits,  or quiet top water baits such as  'horney toads" and similar,  top water toads and other frog type lures, normally produce. Pitch them onto the water lily's wait a bit and just pull them off the lily pads but not to quickly.
Bass are an ambush predator so always looking for an oportune snack.

tight lines and a safe trip guys

Guys we had a awesome day and would like to thank Mike Pike for the arrangements  :+ cred:  to  you. Got there at about 07h45 and Toppie was already there doing the last min prep to the boat and what a stunning boat I might add. Mike got there not much longer after me and could see in his eyes he was amped for some serious fishing. Mike's boat is just what you need on this dam not to big and not to small and must take my hat of the you Mike your boat is well taken care.

So after a trip down the dam to the dam wall we started to fish and about 5 min in to the session my son not only his first real fishing trip but got hooked into a big bass. Man you should of seen this little guys excitement it was something unreal little bit of a "screaming girl" at first and then when he saw the fish it hit him now this is what its all about.

To all that took part Toppie, Deon and Mike Pike thanks mill you guys made it worth it and hoping the next one comes much quiker

Was very fun, except when my blackberry turned into a waterberry, still working so no worries. Higlight of the day must have been all the three boats riding in formation. Glad to be back on the ultimate side of life. Thanks guys for the awesome day.

(clap)   (clap) .. great way to spend the day out on the water with friends , Clive Deone and Daniel and family , and Mike (isivuba ) and Jayden , who was the man of the moment and out fished us all with a fine size bass caught on lure , well done we have a top U.A angler in the making , the dam is a great venue for some freshwater angling and i can see a couple of trips on the cards in summer when the bass are more active , the facilities are pretty basic but it is out in the open country as one would expect , spent some time cruising around and scoping the waters out and a bit of bassing from the old days , was great fun , Thanks for putting in the time and effort guys and gals , will definitely do this again some time, herewith some pics from the day .
suppose you could call this a gathering of boats .
