Title: John F's DIY Gaff protector
Post by: John F on August 13, 2010, 11:31:34 AM
If you built you own gaff (like I do) or you just got one from the tackle shop without a protector, here's a small tip that may help keep things a bit safer on board.

A small piece (8 cm) of old fuel hose does the trick.

For me it is fundamental, as I use it on my rubberduck. In addition to that it keeps the gaff really sharp (the point doesn't bump or gets stuck every time) and off course, people's ankles on board are safe in those choppy, bumpy seas we get.

Cheers

John F if I may. This is what I use. A simple clear tubing that remains on the gaff. Remove the tip and turn it away to use the gaff.

Must agree with Tunaman, I do the same! The pipe is nice and tight on the hook so you can pull it off the point and rotate the pipe to the back and it won't be in the way when you gaff!

But very good point John, It is very dangerous to have a gaff "unprotected" around, you never know what damage it could do!!

PS after reading what I just wrote, please keep the protection on your "other" gaff when gaffing in places other than on the water!! :tkx:
