I could argue that I caught these - but for fair disclosure it was done with a net about as fine as mosquito mesh! Photos are through a microscope - so "microfishing" might not be far off!


Anyone keen to guess?

Fish larvae are almost always wildly different from what the adults end up looking like  :craz: :

I have been working on Sole larvae this week. Fun fact - members of the Sole family have a very interesting early development. They start out with eyes on either side of their head like normal fish. As their body develops the characteristic flat sole shape the eye on the underside of the body migrates around the forehead to meet the other one on top! (the last one is not the same species as the first two but it illustrates the point)

Here is a group of what I am 99% sure is Zebra larvae. The second photo shows a different lighting setup that allows you to count the vertebrae and fin elements in smaller see through larvae. Being able to count all these characteristics helps ID larvae - because often larvae from the same family look very similar and can only be distinguished by the number of spines and rays in each of the fins.
