Launched from DSBC this morning for 3 hours of fishing. Water at a warm 23.7 degrees out on the 50m line and trolled north. Plenty of YFT around, a four hook-up on the way out and two more on the way back, but smallish in size of around 4kg. Should be similar conditions for the next few days.

Halco's and Rapala's 2m divers in blue-silver and purple-silver, about 20-25m behind the boat, at 9-10 kmh. That's the setup that worked for today.

Took a day off and ended up with a 8kg couta, started in very green water round the corner, where I had one pull but lost the fish after two mins when the line parted, suspect another fish took the duster :dunno:
moved to much cleaner water at No1 where I got the fish on a live mackerel.

May has been a hectically busy month but I've finally got a gap to update the past month's fishing. Myself and Adrian (forum member) fished the Umkomaas interclub in April - wasn't too eventful and we battled on the second day with a gale force NE but in the end we got a few decent Blacktip and Yellowspot kingies on jig and a couple of bonnies and a yellowtail all in the Aliwal Shoal area.

The first weekend of May we fished the Natal Gamefish Champs / Interzonals at Pennington which is a great 3 day comp to train up and coming anglers from the various zones in KZN and get them used to competitive IGFA angling on 10kg line. This time around the Shoal was on fire and some great fish came out over the weekend. The teams all have rotating captains and boats each day so that the anglers get to fish with different captains and skippers each day to maximise their learning curve. I captained three teams over the weekend and we got fish every day which was a bonus:

Day 1 - calm seas and light wind, live bait was scarce but we got a few mozzies and sea pike. Went for couta early on the 20m reefs but no pulls so headed out to the trusty 19FA line off Hospital Road (Scottburgh). There were a lot of boats there and some the guys already had a few wahoo and one boat a 35kg couta. We worked the area but it was quiet on the turn of the tide so we ventured south to Landers pinnacle. We found some spearos there who had shot a few wahoo and a sailie so we worked the area with livebaits for a while. Eventually we found a pattern and worked a baitball with chum for about 20 minutes and raised some yellowfin which we managed to tease into eating poppers. The biggest one went 18kg.

Day 2 - I had a different team and a different boat on this day and we chose to work the same area. We got better live baits this day and headed straight back to Landers while the rest of the fleet went to Hospital Rd. We worked the pinnacle with lures for the first hour and got two yellowfin (one on a feather and the other on a shallow runner Halco) and then had a pull from a wahoo that ate a daisy chain! It lasted five minutes before the fish chowed through the nylon. We made another turn over the same spot and I got a nice 15kg wahoo on a blue/silver Speed Pro which was great. Spent the rest of the day looking for a third species (couta or kingie) but the strong reversed current didn't help. My fellow angler Adrian also picked up his personal best wahoo of 18kg on a kona.

Day 3 - The Sunday started with a strong SW wind that just got worse through the morning. We went to Landers again but it was unfishable so we opted to stay inshore and look for couta. We drifted the 16m line from Park Rynie launch to Scottburgh point. We got three couta pulls and dropped a sailie all on baits. The one lightie I was fishing with was whipping a spoon late in the morning and got a nice 12kg Yellowfin so it ended well. All in all a great comp and some great fish caught over the weekend.

Went fishing on Sat morning. Took Kieran to do some bottom fishing.
Managed to get some nice bait so headed so try our luck for some decent bottom fish.
There are a lot of gannets around Diving, Seems a lot of bait is around at the moment.
Water temps have dropped in the last week or so down to 20 from being 23 a couple weeks ago.

We struggled in the early part of the day but started to catch a couple of fish from Lunch time.
I managed to get a nice Yellowbelly rockcod which made my day as I have not caught on of these for a long time.
Then to top the day off Kieran managed to catch 3 Yellowbellys after me. Shame all of his were 50cm and we released them.
We were not fishing very deep so the fish were fine and swam back down immediately.

Thought it was a good sign to catch so many of them in the same day.

We decided to do another trip last Saturday morning. Denzil, Kieran and I launched at first light.
We tried for Bait in front of the club and managed a bit of everything.
Headed off towards the bottom marks as that was the plan for the day.
The water is still cold at about 20 now. There were a lot of sardines around and saw them being netted at a couple of spots.
I managed a nice dagga and Kieran got a very fat Catface otherwise fishing was hard and did not catch much.

managed a few snoek in my secret spot yesterday with some of my new rigs.
A bad days fishing is better than sitting at home.

Decided to do an afternoon trip on Saturday. Denzil and I left just after lunch and found a very bumpy sea.
Was supposed to be no wind with a decent wave gap. Weather forecast was wrong again.
Sea Temp was at 20.6 degrees and the current was not too bad. We fished a bit of bottoms but struggled.
The fish were there but just seemed to not be interested in our bait. As it got dark we headed to try our luck for a dagga.
There was another boat there already and they seemed very quiet. I changed traces and put out a bait.
Normal story as I started doing other things I got the bite, Hand full of chips, trying to hold the rod and stop the KP with the other hand.
Anyway managed to get things under control and caught a really nice dagga.
