SARAGOSA SW5000 SERVICE AND MAINTENANCE TUTORIAL
« on: June 04, 2016, 01:43:14 pm »
Photographic tutorial on how to service and maintain the Shimano Saragosa SW5000

Warning: Do NOT try this at home unless you are proficient at servicing Fixed spool reels. Although this is not one of the most difficult reels to service, it has some tricky parts. MANY O-rings and rubber seals that can  easily become damaged. Proceed with caution!

THE ANTI-REVERSE MECHANISM

Remove the Cover seal

Remove the Anti-reverse Clutch/bearing

The Cover seal O-ring actually fits like this:

Interestingly, I cannot find the Clutch sleeve Part on the Schematics!?

Remove the Rear cover

The Body Seal has come away with the LHS plate when separating the 2 sides. It should fit into the RHS plate when re-assembling.

The Drive Gear

THE LEFT HAND SIDE PLATE

So what we're left with...

Clean all parts in Benzine with a toothbrush. Regrease liberally, except for the Anti-reverse, which needs ONE drop of oil to prevent rust.

Follow the sequence backwards to Re-assemble.

SOME TIPS ON RE-ASSEMBLY:

The ANTI-REVERSE mechanism only goes in one way. Take note of the alignment otherwise it will not go back in properly.

Another great tut Reefz! Thanks!

I have an older 6k 'gosa (goldish). Wonder if it changed that much compared to this model?

Yup. Although it's going to help "waterproof" the reel, it also stops moisture that has entered the reel from getting out. Lot's of flimsy O-Rings and seals... gonna mean lot's of replacement and maintenance needed for this reel.  :dunno:

Hi from Australia Reefman
Was looking for some information on the saragosa I have just purchased and came across your tutorial.
A terrific piece of work.
Thanks for your time and effort - I hope I don't need it but if I do I think you have it all covered.
Cheers
Bogey

@ Bogey  :welc:

Thanks Reefz... I assume the 6k is going to be almost carbon copy when considering Shimi's relationships between 5 & 6k reels. Also, was Mike's reel new? Should I lube mine before putting it to serious use? (I've thrown with it for about an hour in total since unboxing and spooling)
Forgive me Father for I have spinned... It's been three weeks since my last cob session.

Ya I reckon the 5k and 6k reels should be pretty similar, if not identical. Yes the reel was new and looked well lubed inside. Don't think pre-use inspection and lube is necessary.

Thanks for the tut, just bought a 5K gosa for surf and rock spinning work. I have a mate with one who's put his through hell and is very happy with it. This will help us look after them!
Men go fishing all their lives.. not realizing it is not fish they are after

:brnz: Hi. On my Saragosa 20000,  I have a damaged Anti Recerse Pawl spring and cover. I did buy the new parst but not sure how to fit them. Any pictures on the 20000 Anti Reverse Pawl?
