Circle hook for marlin livebait....another method
« on: June 28, 2011, 07:02:24 pm »
So by now there are so many ways to rig a livebait for marlin with a circle hook. I personally prefer the hat elastic and normal bridal rig, but i recently dropped 2 marlin with this rig and started to look around and experiment. This method is mix between "Piet scrap" cable tie method of rigging with a single J hook and Brad phillips way of rigging his baits with a straw infont of the hook.

The person who showed me the rig has a 100% success rate so far with this rig, 4 Marlin ( not many, but not bad hook up rate).

The cable tie can hurt the bait, but thats why ill use the rig only with a yellow fin, they are hard to kill.... the main thing is that the hook is will stand away from the bait during the setting of the hook.  I use 20/0 by choice, but had the 18/0 lying around

Finally the whole reason for this is the pic below.

Pulled this bait out of the marlins stomach 4 times, the hook hung up on the jaw of the bait ,and so could not set the hook....

Sure it was not awesomely rigged but sometimes it happens...

Bryant, Nice post.
BTW, your bait looks old and has freezer burn. I recomend fresh bait for best results. LOL

That's really cool Bryant. Do you try and keep the hook upright or do you think it even matters with the bait set away from the hook?

I'm thinking of a way now to do both the hat band and straw...

@tkei - agree bait is terrible, but being stuck inland, it was either that or catalina rigging a carp :carp:

@nico - Dont think it matters to much, as long as the hook is snelled. I tried it with hat elastic, just had to much stretch. I use 130ib dacron, the whole rig depends on that link between the bait and hook lasting, the resistance of the bait will help position the hook, i would be nervous with elastic,,,,,,, maybe im wrong, would really have to play with it a bit more.

How about putting a small snap swivel at the end of the straw, and bridling the bait onto that with hat elastic? You can hook the one end of the loop over the snap before sticking it through and then simply hook the other end and close the snap?

Might be too much fiddling with a live bait, but may be worth a try. I will try and make something up like that and see how easy it is to rig a bonnie like that next week in Moz, and see how well they survive.
