Can one skip the 1m mono leader and tie the braid leader directly to a swiwel?
I've tried a couple of knots (braid to swiwel) but most seem to slip.
Any suggestions?

You can, especially if you're tieing a Trace to the end, which makes the mono and trace too long to cast.
Here's a thread discussing it:

I use the doubled palomar to the swivel.

The loop to loop works great , can be time consuming but worth it , what i do sometimes is a small bimini in the braid and attach swivel by catspaw method and then attach mono to other end of swivel only on the lighter tackle though ... and what ever you do dont cast the swivel thru the rod eyes ..

Old topic i know. But is this way of making a loop still relevant.
Also am not clear what happens with all that tag end sticking out
Here is another form of stitched loop which looks very strong..

So that Video you posted is how to make a Wind-on leader. Wind-on leaders are used for extreme and heavy tackle fishing - Shark fishing and Billfishing offshore. It's made using 100-400lb Dacron.
